Late-Night cafes in Galway?

Hey guys.
I'm just wondering if there are any late-night cafes in Galway city?
I often fancy a cappuccino at 8 or 9 o'clock in the evening but the only cafe I know of that is open late in Galway is Java's on Abbeygate Street - and I don't really like their cappuccinos/lattes etc.

Are ther any other cafes that open late in the city or on the outskirts of the city?

I've had a nice Latte in the reception/bar of the House Hotel, during the day tho, so I am not sure how late they would do coffees, but I imagine all night.

Also had a surprisingly good coffee in Bazaar, and Neachtains just got a new coffee machine.

The last 2 suggestions are obviously pubs, but if it is quiet, it is a nice option - hard to get Neachtains that quiet, but Bazaar has its low nights.

There is a few around that are open late enough,
There is one across the road from cp's, as far as i know its open until around 10 i think. Port internet cafe is also open until 12 o'clock 6 nights a week, id imagine they stop serving coffees etc after 11 tho.

Jaysus.... too many people don't know the street names in Galway. the across from CPs happens to be on Abbeygate street which is the one he says he doesn't like.

i'd put put a bet on that Java's is the best place you'll get at that hour. Some pubs/hotels would porbably have their coffee machines still going til around 9 or 10 but i can't imagine you getting a better quality cup anywhere at that hour... unless Java's coffee is a lot worse than i remember.

Galway really does lack in nice cosy late night cafes...even Javas years ago was a good place to go after a night out, or even as CPs was open you could point and laugh at the queue.. now it's all goats cheese and warm hot choc as opposed to hot hot choc..I remember Scribblers or something across from Charlie Byrnes was a nice place and open till 4am or something..we need more of those!

I agree, there's a distinct lack of authentic coffee houses in Galway. We have enough of the chains of cafes and the bland coffee that they serve. Don't know where I could recommend a decent cafe for the day, let alone the night time. Sure there's plenty of bars serving coffee but if you're looking for a coffee in the evening, you don't want to be surrounded by people drinking. Anyone remember Banana Poblacht? I liked the atmosphere there. At least we don't have Starbucks, yet.

Banana Phoblacht was the name I was trying to remember..not like it was that long ago..that place was great..pity it's gone..compared to so many European cities we have nothing late night...

nowhere in town can get a latte right (the mocha beans on st augustine street are gone now ). it's not that hard, all the cafes need is a thermometer for the frothing jug, but everywhere scalds the milk. i was surprised with javas the first time i went, purely over rated.

Bananaphoblacht is sorely missed, that place was great. Real pity they couldn't stay open. You'd always get great service if you tried the cupla focail too

Is this a new phenomenom? Going out for a coffee at night? If I want a coffee I have one at home. If I want to go out I go to the pub.:D

There are few non-drinkers on here I think.
And I have a friend who works night shift, but gets up in the afternoon, she wouldn't have a pint before work but a fancy coffee makes her feel like she is vaguely socialising!

You can get coffee in most pubs. It's not normally flash ... I'd almost say it's never flash. But it does contain caffine. And bars that are responsible to customer demand will slowly start making it better if more people ask for it.

Cafe Luna on St Augustine St is open until 10 on Fri/Sat I think.

Port closes at 10pm every night now.

There's another place (Cafe Bueno?) on Abbeygate St, on the opposite side from Java, down in the pedestrianised bit. Most restaurantish, but they'll do just coffee if you ask.

But as others have said, overall the scene isn't flash ... must be 'cos the pubs are so good!

Bistro Bianconi in Westside do a really good coffee until midnight if you are over that end. It is a Pizza place but I have noticed more and more people making it a hangout.

Westside Shopping Center is not the most ambient place tho

I do miss going for a coffee in the evenings. Back in Ballina, where I am now all the cafes are closed by 6, and only two pubs serve coffee after 8. For those cold evenings when you don't fancy drinking nothing bets a hit of caffeine.

Bring back the REAL hot chocolates of Apostasy/BananaPhoblacht!!! Or even Le Graal ('twas a wine bar, but you could just go in for your coffee, too, until about 2am!)

Mmmm, Bananaphoblacht did PROPER hot chocolate! I've only had better in Austrian ski resorts, although that may have been down to the shot of brandy
