So the story goes, myself and my girlfriend were in town this evening at around 6pm starving and craving some sushi. We decided to head to Aya by Grafton St as it was nearby and is one of our favorite spots as it has a conveyor belt. For those of you unaware, you can either sit on stools and pick from a range of food (like a buffet) on the belt that rotates, or you can sit at a table and order from the set menu.

This evening, the stools were all full and although we are aware that the larger tables adjacent to the belt are normally reserved for groups, we went in hoping to be seated here as there was no other seats at the belt and we did not want to order from the menu as it's overpriced.

My girlfriend asked to be seated at one of five free tables, it was pointed out to us that there were other couples queuing for stools to be made available. We were told that these tables are reserved for groups and so we would have to queue for stools with the other couples.

Why is it that restaurants will turn away customers who are ready and willing to pay in hopes that one more person will show up to make a group?

We walked out and instead had Chinese around the corner.

Duh: double date it - you're all hungry, why torture yourselves? Be daring and social! You should've paired up with one or more of the couples and made an evening of it - thats how they seat you in those steak houses all the time (where they cook in front of you)

Sorry I assumed it was groups that made a reservation....not groups that are jumbled together from the queue of waiting customers

I would of thought that too. But you could of asked how many people constitute a group (but being a smart arse rarely gets you anywhere).

Or get some unidentifiable bits of raw fish being thrown out in capel street, cold rice from a chinese resteraunt, some seaweed from the beach, wrap it all up and swallow. Cost = nothing and it probably wont make you any more sick than fancy sushi would.
