€40k for a rainy day - where to put it?

WHIP IT!

If you had €40k and wanted to put it somewhere safe (risk-free, so not "invested" as such), where would you put it?

I'm looking for a bank to put it in, make the maximum interest, and still be able to take it out whenever I want...

Check out Halifax. When they first came to Ireland they let you put €10k into the monthly saver account and then a maximum of €750 a month. (I know that it would take a few years to get €40k in there!!) But I think that they pay something like 7% interest (I think its 5.5% and 1.5% bonus for not withdrawing more than twice a year - or something like that)

First active are offering 5.22pc on amounts up to 15K and 4.07pc on amounts there after. Looks to be the best deposit rates around at the moment!

The main difference between between Rabo and First Active seems to be that Rabo give u the higher rate up to 10k and their lower rate thereafter. Whereas, with FA, if you're over their 15k threshold, your whole balance is at the lower rate (albeit, this is still 4.07).
