Pavilions Shopping Centre

I have heard a rumour that Marks and Spencers are opening up in the new part of the centre. Anyone else heard this or indeed has anyone else heard what shops are opening up there?

Looking for some new shops to wander around on Sunday mornings. lol;)

I heard that rumour about a year ago but it seems unlikely to me. Pavillions already has 2 supermarkets (Dunnes and Superquinn). The centre is lacking a big department store though. There are no M&Ss in the northside suburbs (I count Liffey Valley and Blanchardstown as west here).

Seriously - what is the story with the new section? With the exception of the cinema it has been finished and vacant for months now...Have they planning problems or why does there seem to be nothing happening?

I was there a couple of weeks ago and there were construction workers everywhere!

I can verify that M+S will be opening a major store there. The entire place is going to grow imensely over the next 5 years. Major development is being done to alot of the surrounding area too. I can prettymuch tell you that it will be the new centre of swords village. The area that is currently the outdoor parking is gonna be more retail space. Planning is at the early stages but the county council have already seen the proposals for the new development. Hotels, restaurants and more stores involved. Though they wouldnt have the specifics of who exactly will be taking up units in it yet at this stage.

It will be an interesting project.

It's actually probably tenant fit out. Shopping centres usually open in the first week in October so it'll probably be then.

No. I was looking at this from the cinema floor and everything looked ready to go except they had cut holes in the pristine marble floor. I thought they were going to be putting in kiosks and had to provide power. What they were actually doing was pouring in bases for the structural steel and the all the shop fronts have come out by several metres. You can see this if you look over the railings at the cinema food counter

That article only said that the new phase would be targeted by the like of M&S and Debenhams. I guess we'll just have to wait until the bit opens to see for sure!

First things first M&S are not going into the new section. The reason for the delay is basically the Pavillions was sold last year to the same crowd who own DunDrum centre and the new owners were not at all happy with the lay out. As you can see from the top floor the amount of waisted space was a joke so they have made most of the units bigger. Also they have now linked up to Pennys and all new shops are due to open within the next 6 weeks.This also includes the new units at the side of Pennys.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know why Aldi or Lidl don't have an outlet in Swords?
They open up in areas with smaller populations, could it be planning issues?

I don't know how true it is, but when the Pavilions opened it was rumoured that Dunne's and Superquinn went in on the condition that Aldi or Lidl wouldn't be allowed to open in the general vicinity.

Unlikely, the shops in the new section are not very big. Pennys on the main street side almost backs onto SuperQuinn.

Spot on. Was in the commercial section of the Irish Times today. Zara are the only major new player. You are right about the Penny's link as well.

Read in the SBP that a sushi restaurant called Yo! Sushi will be opening in November. There's one already in Dundrum SC.

There is a long "tradition" in the area of lobbying by powerful local business interests against new openings. If that doesn't work, local business owners have been known to buy up land in the vicinity in order to prevent anybody else from developing it. (Or using it as part of a planning permission application as parking, etc). You have to remember this is Ray Burke county. Local cultures are hard to change, especially in an ireland still heavily driven heavily by property development/ownership interests.

Sadly, they don't have the documents going back to the mid 1980s objections to the original development. They made interesting reading at the time. My sister did her masters degree in Geography, incidentally, on the mass of revisions made to local draft area planning documents, which strangely enough, seemed to coincide with plans for bigger commercial and residental developments. A significant businessman from the Kilsallaghan area suggested to her to look at landbanks owned by one particular business interest, who had strategically bought up a number of properties (at the time mostly derelictions and rough scrub) in order to prevent anybody else from developing them as competition.

Having said that, since then most of these lands have either been developed on, sold or had proposals made. There is one still up before the planners which may turn out to be particularly interesting, last judgement I saw was 2004.

New section is opening next Wednesday the 24th im told. Zara(on two levels) Champion Sports, Esprit, Diesel, Du Pareil au Meme, Butlers Chocolates, Body Shop and Yo Sushi and a few others. Not all shops will be open but will be by mid November.

M&S confirmed yesterday that they will open their biggest Irish store (12,000 sq m) in phase three of The Pavillions (planning for which will be applied for early next year)

Next march Tommy Hilfiger, Espirit, Bertoni, Champion Sports and Yo Sushui will open in phase two.

At present apparently 150,000 shoppers shop there per week.

Thats great news. I love M&S. Traffic can be the pits now, can't imagine what it will be like after phase 3...............
