Great post - I've wondered this many times... but I still just bang em in the bin at the recycle station... I guess the glass is melted down anyway, is it??

i just bang em into recycling station as well...
but recently caught my house mate taking them out...and it sort of made me feel bad. like i'm not caring about the environment enough..?..

I hate this! It really annoys me (and unfortunately, as I live with smokers, I've encountered it on a number of occasions

).

I've pondered this problem quite a bit, as I'm a Corona drinker. I usually stick it in the recycling anyway. It has to be environmentally better than putting the glass in with the landfill rubbish.

I wouldn't worry about the lime, it'll rot away to nothing quickly, with no harm to the environment. It's not like it's made of plastic.

what about the paper on the outside or the little bits of drink leeft in the bottom, im sure that in the furnace (i have no idea how glass is recycled, but ill take a stab working from secondary school metalwork(smelting)) they add a reactant that combines with anything not glass and floats/sinks then pure glass is tapped off.
Well thats a semi-educated guess.

well, i know its biodegradable, but correct me if im wrong, but in order to recycle glass, they have to melt it. So how does a 10% presence of organic solids affect the process? do they extract it or just get on with it?

I know in a lot of pubs, they don't have time to be picking out bit of lime from loads of Corona bottles, so don't worry about it too much. But if you're drinking them at home, you may aswell, why not?
A lot of bottles don't have paper on the outside, the logo etc is on the glass itself.

Yep in ireland bottles are "Recycled" and not "Reused"... not much would survive the heat.... also i'm sure 90% of the lime is water...

in other countries like canada they have a "re-usable" beer bottle which is washed out after use with some sort of caustic... this is much better for the environment as melting glass down takes a huge amount of energy!

I put Lime in a Corona because it tastes nice...simple as..

I've tried it with other beers and its just not the same...

Just think of all the pollution caused by transporting and melting down recycable material. Land fills are more environmentally friendly.
Save the planet, put you glass in the regular bin!

LOL same here, been in Mexico dozens of times and never saw the Mexicans drinking Corona with lime, its a beer for f@@ks sake, its like putting lime in a bottle of Bud or Miller :rolleyes:

Yeah agree fully, the best tasting Mexican beer is called Indio, pity they don't sell it here.

Lime juice is anti-bactericidal and is a grease remover.

Fresh fruit is usually sterile too.
Just the sort of thing you'd want to clean the neck of a bottle in unhygenic pubs.

I'd doubt that limes would affect glass as they'd be vaporised long before the glass would melt.

Yea hes right it is a myth. The original reason for the lime is that hop compounds degrade when they come into contact with light. This causes beer in clear bottles to turn 'skunky.' The limes used to mask this smell.

If the guilt over this corona/lime eco disaster is causing you sleepless nights there is a simple solution. The morning after a session go into your garden (if you have one) or similar space , grab a firm hold of the bottle near the base and swing it nozzle end away from you. The lime should hav absorbed enough beer to fly out of the bottle with a satisfying thwack. I find this process extremely gratifying, especially so if sobriety hasnt taken hold;)
