The post of executioner in Singapore (for example) comes at an Annual salary of S$36,000 (EUR18,000), and its S$400 (EUR200) per execution. Singapores chief executioner was a harmless looking 78 year old Indian pensioner (S Murugesu), but once his identity was found, he had to resign.

Singapore is criticised, but rest assured. If I wanted, I could have a spliff or an ectasy tablet within 15 minutes in any part of that city. In two phone calls. So death penalties do not work. As for getting caught, the notion of anyone having drugs in Singapore is so utterly incomprehensible, so its perceived as non existent. Anyway, I would'nt dare. I know how, but then, I don't have the right connections on that side of the causeway.

I am broadly against the death penalty except in extreme cases. I believe that each case should be looked at on its merits. One thing I do believe in, is abolition of the jury system and replacing it with the European system of trial by a panel of magistrates (3 judges, majority decision)

Ireland does not have a perfect society, but its something to be proud of when in many respects, we are ahead of our former occupier and have become an example to the world, instead of a joke.

I don't see why we should introduce some of these sickening right wing policies. While I will admit being to the right of Attila the Hun in how we should deal with skangers and scum, I'm mentally balanced enough to admit that its a chip on my shoulder I cannot solve. I hope I am balanced enough to realise that if we attempted to introduce measures to deal with it in a draconian manner will cause us all to suffer.

Dealing with social attitudes from lowlives is not done overnight. It takes a generation. Lee Kwan Yew's book "From Third World to First" is a telling story on how to get a chaotic society into an ordered society. It took him the guts of 15 years.

I've seen heartbreaking cases where families refused access to next of kin in hospitals. I've personal experience of a case, where one partner lost his council flat in the UK when his partner died. This was prior to civil partnership and legal recognition. He was unable to attend his partners funeral. I did not expect you to understand that, or have such direct experience.

The reason you do not understand is that you are a young student, and over time I hope that the varied spectrum of people serves to delight you, rather than repulse you. I was young once. The problem is, the radical views you have are just that. Your OWN radical views. I have my own radical views, but they are not practical, much less desirable. There are things we dislike. We cannot change them. We accomodate them.

There are too many contradictions in your views, and perhaps you are having difficulties expressing them. While you may be a moderate, or slightly right wing, you are leaving yourself open to attack to people who can quote and discredit you. If I have compared you to Nazis, or Stormfront, that is the impression you have given. Your own words, and a lack of thought, consideration of consequences, cause and effect have done that. All I have done is highlighted the chain reaction that results.

"The lower class"

People in the upper classes have always 'cared' for the "lower class", and in my experience, not much good came of it. Plenty of theories, literature, reports, and hot air.

Much as I would like to support a death penalty, evidence around the globe indicates that it tends to be used in countries where the justice system is the best money can buy, or where if you don't have visible money, contacts. The death penalty is the crude device of corrupt regimes and failed societies. Its not practical.

My ideal justice system is something like a more humane, democratic version of Singapore. The justice system I regard as completely flawed is in the United States. If you have travelled, or have the opportunity to travel, you'll find models around the world that will fit into to your vision.

In 5 years time, you could revisit this thread, and you will find it embarrassing. If thats part of the process of creating a well formed, educated personality, thats the price we pay. We were all young once.

I find Stormfront mildly amusing at best, and sinister at worst.

Okay this country needs sorting out.If I was to run in the next general election this is what I would offer.

1.More prisons,no bail,longer sentences,and no shortening of sentences for good behaviour.The prisons would be finances by the money I would save by canceling all dole payments to forgein citizens/assylum seekers.They will be allowed to work and fenf=d for themselves from day one

My opinion

Prison is no joke anyway, and it should be a last resort when all other options have been exhausted. I'd use imprisonment on a third minor conviction (e.g. Shoplifting, Vandalism, Anti-Social behaviour). It should be dealt with on a case by case basis. A one size catch all conviction policy leads to the crazy American system.

Dole is paid for by the social security payments of foreign citizens as much as Irish citizens in employment. As for asylum seekers, a nation is judged on how it treats the weakest in its shores. There should be no free ride, but complete laissez faire "fend for themselves" will lead to the law of the jungle. But they can provide certain public services for their dole money. They need to be qualified before being employed, so they have to do college courses, FAS courses etc. Once they are making an honest effort to be productive, I have no problems.

Nothing is free. I'd prefer targetting the funding at primary and secondary level, and try and prevent dropouts. There is a loss of potential talent when a child drops out of school.

You're drug policies are a bit stupid too, the way to get people off drugs is not to hand out sentences but to give them councelling and rehab, you have to make someone not want to take drugs, not try and scare them of the consequences. I currently live in Thailand where, although simple possesion of any drug carrys a life sentence, I am openly offered drugs in every bar and on many corners on 'the strip'. Proof that it doesn't work.

I’m not claiming that I would completely eradicate drug abuse but I'm sure I could reduce their use by up to 90%.
