Human mating seasons?

Just noticed over the past 2 or 3 months a sharp increase in the amount of people posting in pi about not having sex or one partner just not wanting to.

this makes me wonder do you think its possible that humans have a natural mating season and some of us just don't have the chemical reactions in our brains at this time of year?

my other theory was that as its heading towards the end of the school year most folk who'd be doing that might be a little out of sorts but that wouldn't cover everything

Well I can tell you that my general randiness increases significantly in the spring. It's chemically induced by alcohol. And visual stimuli in the form of short skirt and tight tops.

Well... years ago a lecturer told of a study done at the sewer works in Dunmurry in Belfast. The idea came about when sewer workers complained of the number of condoms that would clog up the works. So he asked them to hang onto the condoms, put them in a biscuit tin or something and count them every day. As was expected there were more on Saturday/ Sunday/ Monday after the weekends shenanigans.

So then he asked them to keep them and count them every day for a year. And it happened that there was a 2 week phase in April where there were wayyy more condoms than any other time of the year. I can't remember the statistic but wayyy more!
They did this for a few years running and found that every year there was a 2 week phase where this would happen and then go back to normal. The 2 weeks would be different every year i.e could be the last 2 weeks of March one year, then the second and third weeks of April the following year, then back to March etc etc.

Interesting... no explanation as to why it happened though.

I've got to race off now but if I get a chance I'll see if I can find a reference. I'm sure it was published.

I used to work in an Easter Egg factory in Belfast years ago, we used to lace them with ground up Rhino Horns and Spanish Fly juice out of sheer boredom.

Women around here always seem to get pregnant around the same time, there's 3 girls (out of 6) up the duff where I work and seem to be all around the same amount of time into the pregnacy. I've noticed that year after year their all ready to pop a sprog around spring time.

Humans are subject to instinctive sexual desire activated by correct criteria.

Unlike most other mammals women don't come into heat and now they can mate at any time, a woman can get pregnant any month, have the baby any day.

The loss of a distinct breeding season is to our advantage as we spread across the world. The seasons, weather and living conditions are different and thus the best time to create offspring (food in abundance ect) can vary.

You'll notice at the moment that there are a good few pregant women around. Personally I think there are seasons for this.

You'll see a lot of pregnancies in May/June due to the fact that people see kids starting school in september and often think I wish that was me sending my child off to school for the first time and decide to have a child.

Other season is around september when you have babies concieved around Christmas. Not just one night christmas accidents but again people who see the enjoyment kids bring to a christmas and thus again decide to have children.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I wonder if it is to do with the increased light levels and the affect on the system in terms of anti-depressant effects.*

Spring is the natural time for commencing growth and it may have some effect there.

*interesting to see if someone counts the number of "i am depressed" instances in PI in january/february

Human mating season doubt it exsists.

But it would be interesting to go onto central statistics office and find a yearly graph detailing dates of births. Find the peak go back 9 months. Check wether or not it was consistent with previous years. If it is, you may have a mating season.

I spent 10mins on cso.ie and got bored. Maybe someone else might be more persistent.

There's really no question of a breeding season in humans, it just doesn't arise.

Of course, weather and work habits and personal circumstances can alter people's attitudes and emotional states to a limited extent, but there's nothing at all applicable to a whole population on grounds of hormones or physiology.
