What's the story with this butchers on Blackfriars Street? There's seems to be nothing in there, just, occasionally, a few lads having a chat.

Am I missing something here?

Heheh, I love that place, hasn't been a bit of meat in there in years. Like you said it's just a few ould lads having a chat. Long may it last

I think there is some dispute with a developer (maybe Penneys) or one of the neighbouring businesses or the council even.They have to keep the shop open to avail of some legal technicality.I can't remember the details.I believe there may not be running water there as it is controlled in one of the neighbouring buildings.

It is also possible that one of these old guys may have been the guy who disputed the legitimacy of the sale of the North quays in the high court.Again the memory is vague but basically his arguement was that the oppertunity for ordinary members of the public to make bids was not facillitaed.Despite the minor detail of not having the 33million.

If so I remember going to a Nice Treaty (second referendum) debate in the Tower Hotel which was attended by a handfull of members of the public.Martin Cullen was there outlining the pro Nice agenda with the Chamber of commerce and reps of mainstream politics.Of course Sinn Féin and the like were in oppsoition in the audience.

Anyhow "mister bee in his bonnet about the North Quays" (Who is not a shinner AFAIK) started waving Bunreacht na hEireann around and shouting.He basically thought that the Government should go back to Brussels and tell Romano Prodi where to go because we already voted on it.I couldn't help admiring (and agreeing) his stance besides the entertainment factor and my own pro-Nice views.

I had a theory like that as well, the Waterford Mafia. A bit like the cafe on The Sopranos.

I don't know exactly.I'm surprised BMC is not on the case.A friend of mine got talking to one of them and he told him all about it but I can'y remember the details.

The Sopranoes idea is a great one though:D

I like the shop front as well and I would like to see more of these retained like the place in arundal square (Walls I think?)

I hope I'm not turning into BMC:D

This premises is still open because the man who owns the premises is retired and likes to have a place to go everyday. He calls it his own conservatory, its old Ireland and I doubt there is any big story behind it, this is what our cities were like 50 years ago and long may it last, tis a rare thing these days!!

When I was running Hewdens a few years ago he used to come up to me for a bit of copying and a chat. A true gent that man is. I used to talk meat with him as I was a Butcher in my early days.

Ive seen the articles in the window, Ive seen the men chatting, Ive looked at that butcher many many times while passing it over my lifetime. But only now after this thread was made, do I realize that there is no meat in there. :pac:

I vaguely remember the article in the paper... something along the lines of the old dude just sits in there with his dog and chats with his mates who pop in from time to time and he tells a few tales to the odd tourist who'll be sent his way. There was something else about whether it's classified as a shop or not but I can't remember. He stopped selling meat years ago obviously but there is a reason he still has the signage etc out front.
