HELP!please!

ok, i'm after getting a virus, before i start, i'm not great at computers, so please fully explain any advice. i downloaded an .exe file that i thought was a activex plug-in. now it has changed my homepage to http://asafetynotice.com/ which keeps displaying a pop-up trying to get me to download more software. it also downloaded a fake protection centre which i uninstalled straoght away, it was called spy-something, could have been spy-search. no virus file are showing up with norton full system scan or microsoft windows malicious software removal tool. does any one have any advice, please i'm kinda desperate cause it is a family computer, not just mine.

Get yourself a copy of AVG Antivirus here and AVG Anti-Spyware here. Install both and run scans in Safe Mode. See if that clears up your problems.

No problem, Safe Mode is just a stripped down Windows basically so if there are running in Safe Mode to do the scans the chances are good that the virus won't be running or activated until Normal Mode. To get to Safe Mode,

Restart the computer and tap the F8 key until it brings up a startup menu, select Safe Mode and then wait for the computer to start normally. When you are done, just simply restart as normal.

ok, i did everything you said and it deleted a programme called Hijacker.VB.kc but the virus is still there!:( i can't change my homepage and the protection bar(which i forgot to mention earlier, sorry!)is still on my toolbar. here's part of the report:

I think you need to download Smitfraud Fix. This is a common virus that you have going by your log.

you should be careful telling him to use smitfraud without full details about it.If you can wait till the morning ill give you all the details you need.You have to be extremely careful what you do with HijackThis,and be careful whos advice you take.Im currently a malware/virus helper on a few websites and been using HJT for years,just please wait till the morning!!

C:\Program Files\Video Access ActiveX Object\ <-- that folder is one of the problem items I believe, if you type it in google it brings up problems. It seems that your system restore profile is infected also so you need to delete those until the virus is removed. Right click My Computer->System Restore and click Turn off System Restore on all drives.

You still have the folder C:\Program Files\Video Access ActiveX Object
Try to manually delete this folder and reboot.
That should be the end of it.

Next install a firewall and anti spyware to prevent further incidents. You can use Zonealarm and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Go to www.download.com and search for them.

It won't let me delete it manually I'm afraid! It says its being used by another programme or person, would it work if i tryed to delete it in safe mode?

OK, after a lot of work and messing about, I got rid of the virus. In safe mode I ran AVG and ACG Spyware, spybot and norton antivirus. i then ran the CCleaner and that did its job, then i did the smitfraudfix again but deleted trusted zone when it was finished. then, still in safe mode, i found the file folder and delted what was left in it manually, everything appears back to normal now except one thing, my norton anti-virus tool bar has changed to red and now says "engine error" an idea on that one?

Also I notice you have two antivirus programs, get rid of Norton and keep AVG. You only need one and Norton is very much a resource hog. Remember to keep it updated.

You will notice your system performance when only having one anti virus program. AVG is better than Norton anyway. Remember to turn back on system restore if the issue is sorted out.
