Bottles water taste

Has anyone ever opened a bottle of water(like ballygowan or river rock ) and got a weird taste from the water? This has happened to me twice recently. The taste is almost like vodka! I complained to the company who made the water and they said it was due to shops storing the water close to household cleaning products etc and the water bottles absorb chemicals from the area they are stored in if not stored correctly. Anyone ever hear of this?? I bought two 2 litre bottles of water last night(a different brand to the one i complained to ) as the tap water is manky and i got the same taste again, is it safe to drink? My mother tasted the water and couldnt taste anything but i am quite sensitive to taste in water/food.

i drink about 2litres every single day and never noticed this before. though i do tend to stick to evian (because it tastes much clearer then ballygowan etc.)

Never had that tbh, and like poster above I drink quite alot of bottled water. The storage explanation sounds somewhat plausible (though in this case they might have just been fobbing you off). I'd go back to the shop you bought it in and complain to them, maybe they do have poor storage practices. When you complain to a company about any food item, they'll inevitably try to blame the shop.

i get this from ballygowan a lot so i've stopped drinking it completely

Just stop drinking bottled water and drink the stuff from the tap. If anyone has travelled to a developing country you will understand how unbelievably lucky we are to have good, clean water on tap. There's no need to buy bottled water. And from an environmental point of view, it's definitely wasteful.

Next they'll try and sell us bottled air. Think more, buy less.

The tap water in my houses has a taste from it, i think its all the minerals in it, its harmless but i can taste it in my tea and in likes of gravy but not in coffee and pasta. I usually buy the cheap tesco bottled water as i get no taste from it but had to buy ballygowan from local shop as too late for tesco last night.

in my shop i find it happens a lot in the summer . i was told its because the water is put into the bottol before the bottol has time to cool down propperly

dono whats true . when its sealed it should be able to absorbe anything from teh outside

and there may be a link between the fluorine which is added to our tap water and the very high rates of alzheimers in this country

I once got a bottle of Ballygowan which has a weird taste so I left it came back the next day and opened and it stunk like raw sewage, it stunk out the whole room it was unbelievable but the water was still crystal clear. So I rang up the health board I think it was and told them so they said for €90 I could get the water tested and could then take court action or else I could get a free test and then they would take them to court and I would have nothing else to do with it. So I took the free test and they found nothing wrong with the water! I rang Ballygowan and complained about the water and they said they’d send me out a free case of Ballygowan and would you believe every bottle of water in the case had the same smell I even got other people to verify this. I rang the health board again they tested the water and found nothing wrong with it, they sent one to Ballygowan and I got a letter from them saying Ballygowan had said it was a harmless reaction with the water and the plastic in the bottle cap and they sent me some vouchers which went straight into the bin. Never bought a bottle of Ballygowan since.

Dasani was launched in the UK in January 2004.

In March 2004, it became public through an article in The Independent newspaper that the tap water of Sidcup was being treated, bottled and sold under the Dasani brand name in the UK. Although Coca-Cola never implied that the water was being sourced from a spring or other natural source, they marketed it as being especially "pure". Hence, the public revelation of it being simply treated tap water caused a media stir.

The media made mocking parallels with a popular episode of the well-known BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses in which the protagonist Del Boy attempts to pass off tap water as spring water. This scheme fails when the local reservoir becomes polluted causing the bottled water to glow yellow. The episode is believed to have contributed to the severe negative reaction to Dasani by the press and public. Clips from this episode were shown in news reports and other programmes relating to the Dasani flop.

Two weeks later, UK authorities found a concentration of bromate in the product that could be considered harmful if drunk in large quantities. Dasani was potentially carcinogenic. Coca-Cola recalled half a million bottles and pulled the "Dasani" brand from the UK market on March 19, 2004.[1] Shortly after, plans to introduce the brand on Continental Europe were announced to have been cancelled as well. Ironically, bromate was not present in the tap water before Coca-Cola's "purification" produced it from the tap water's harmless bromide.

Coca-Cola added calcium chloride to Dasani in the UK to meet laws requiring calcium in all bottled waters. The company claims that the amount of bromide in the water led to the formation of unacceptable levels of bromate during the ozonation process used in purification. The U.S. version of Dasani does not contain calcium chloride.

In 2004 the Ig Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to The Coca-Cola Company for "using advanced technology to convert liquid from the River Thames into Dasani, which for precautionary reasons has been made unavailable to consumers".

The withdrawal of the product and the resulting PR disaster has been likened to the New Coke fiasco. Dasani never made it to Ireland or Northern Ireland, as Coca-Cola Bottlers (Ulster) produce the Deep River Rock brand of water for sale in the island.

Glad to hear others have had the experience and not just me. I think some people are more sensitive to tastes from the likes of bottled water. I will be ringing ballygown to complain on monday. You would think they would sort out whatever is causing problem, many other bottled waters are fine for me so they must'nt be doing whatever Ballygowan are doing.

The health board would only test for 20 or 30 most common contaminants and only in high enough concentrations. Theres millions of chemicals in the world and very expensive to test for everything in a water sample.

Send it back to the company who made it, complete with a letter (always ending in "I await your response", or something similar

), and they might send you out a box of the non-contaminated type.

My mam always does that when she finds an already-punctured packet of crisps in a multi-pack, and they send her out a big pack or somethin!

I have never noticed a strange taste in bottled water (I drink the bottled stuff so I don't have to deal with tap) but that is kind of scary... we could be consuming chemicals without even knowing it!

That sounds quite possible alright. Its also said that you shouldn't reuse bottles for water, as the chemicals in the plastic eventually start to contaminate the water even though the bottle is fully cooled.

Ballygown water never tastes right though, moved quickly to Evian after trying it a few times.

Are you sure you're not just drinking vodka??

Just kidding.. That didn't happen to me yet..
But tap water usually goes well with me anyway..
Just be sure to boil the tap water first though

We got one, 20 euro I think it was in Roches Stores and its perfect, water is chilled and tastes great!

I had a bad experience with a Ballygowan Sparkling once ever. It just tasted off and I know for sure the bottle was just opened then. Bleurgh. Kinda ruined my meal tbh.

I bought a brita filter thing a few years ago and it doesnt change the taste of the tap water in my home. I dont care if tesco still water i buy is from a tap, it tastes of absolutely nothing which is what i want and it only costs 30cent for 2 litres. I use one 2litre a day so its 2 euro a week and i have taste free water for my tea! I dont buy evian/ballygowan because i think they are particullary good for me or better than tap water, its taste and convenience.

It does in mine, the difference is like night and day.

I live in a small town in Meath. If I don't use one of the showers the pores in the shower head get blocked with calcium deposits in around four weeks of unuse...that's how bad it is.

Having said that, the Brita filters have a half-life at least half that Brita claim they have. Considering they're about €6 a pop, it's probably cheaper for me to buy bottled water.

Evian is the nicest so far...but guess what 'Evian' is spelt backwards? Spooky.

Over the past year, the RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) have covered a newly found problem with plastic water bottles in their newsletters. Apparently, ANTIMONY (Sb in your periodic table me thinks) is being leached into water from plastic bottles if left over a long time. I'll get back with some key points later

Sounds interesting, and explains why I only like bottled water from glass bottles, such as San Pellegrino.
