I was sitting in the pub last night with my friends and they started giving me loads of hassle for being so into music. They were saying that I base my opinions of people around what music they like and if somebody has what I deem to be bad taste in music I won't have much time for them.....

I went home and thought about it and it's true. If I meet a guy that I find attractive and we start talking about music but he has completely different taste to me, I lose interest instantly. I honestly believe that the type of music you're into reflects your personality. For example, girls who are into Christina Aguilera and Girls Aloud tend to be Bacardi Breezer drinking, pink lipsticked, hen party loudmouths....tis true....they may be lovely girls but if I meet someone who is into that kind of music I respect them less. Jeez, I probably sound like a b*tch but can any of you relate to this?!?!

Judging someone on their music taste is, to my mind, small-minded ego-stroking. Everyone's appreciation of any music is personal and unique to that person. You cant argue out a preference to someone using logical, rational steps. That's why it's called a "preference", part of a "personal taste".
Saying that you can infer personal characteristics from musical taste is equally dumb. You are assuming that this person sees this medium in the same way that you do. For some, music is for dancing to, for others it is the all-encompassing presence that pulls together the discordant strands of your life. Both are equally personal, and equally valid.

Indeed, but as a society we judge people on there "preference" and "personal taste" all the time.

You might not think anything of me if i turned to you on a bus and said "I hate Franz Ferdinand" but you would think something if i turn to you and said "I hate black people".

Personal taste, preference and matters of opinion make us who we are....have a common ground with people over such matters, be it small like music, or bigger, more moral issues allows us to gauge people and decide if we would get along with them.

Sure, the issue of disliking someone for the musicical taste is FAR SMALLER than disliking someone for the race.....but they are based in the same human responses.

Of course it's a personal characteristic, and it's one you cant possibly know from somebody's taste in music. Which is why I didnt name any genres/bands/whatever.

I totally agree that you can judge a person on their music taste. Especially for a woman judging a guy. If she is to meet a guy who likes boybands and teen pop sh!t, how could she possibly respect him.

Equally if I were to meet a girl who listened to that kinda music, it would put me on guard. You'd not necessarily dismiss them but they would HAVE to have a good film tast.

Hmm. Musicism...I don't think I can afford to judge people on their unexplored musical tastes, because all of my nearest friends like different music from me.
I'll say this time and time again, musical taste is like being a wine connoisseur. It develops; becomes more particular over time and some people just haven't been drinking as much wine for as long as you. Other people do have taste, but it has developed in a different direction to yours. The only person I would 'judge' is someone who just flat out says they don't listen to music / very little music. Most of the people who share my particular taste in music are usually trendy, elitist hardcore kids, anyway.

Here are my tastes so you can judge me:
Thrice, Glassjaw, Finch, Alexisonfire, Metallica, Megadeth, Faith No More, The Used, Isis, Underoath, Thursday, Zao, etc etc...:)

I think a lot it is that some people are filling in gaps in their life with things like music, movies, literature and THAT becomes your common experience rather than a lot of everyday stuff. Therefore when it comes to interacting it's going to be much easier to get on with (or even just talk to) people who have been passing (wasting?) their time with the same sort of stuff you have.

Similarily it's easy to just write off people who didn't follow your art-path as "this that and the other" cos it takes too much effort (or simply you don't have the shared experience it takes) to get to know them.
