Greetings,

would be nice to see the various different sterotypes people have come across during their time in Ireland. I've been living abroad for a few years and come back to notice it even more so then usual.

So to start it off here are the 4 I notice the most

Name: Self Loathing Irish person
Traits: They insist that Irish culture is a fraud. Our drinking culture is by far the worst in the world and we have no culture in the country. They of course enjoy the classics (Of everything) and are confused as to why cities like Dublin don't offer as many cultural events of lets say Paris which has maybe 10 times the population of Dublin.

Name: The southie
Traits: Generally come from the south of Ireland (Below Dublin

). They come up and flock to BT during the sales to stock up on last seasons tommy hillfigure. They always insist dublin is a kip and always wear tommy hillfigure (Not that its a good or bad thing... just an observation)

Name: BOP
Traits BOP's have evolved since my time in Ireland. They no longer wear pink but now wear those big sun glasses that must be the latest sort of bathaclatha (sp?) They cover the same amount of your face but people are less suspicious. I've also noticed equal rights in this department with guys now going for the classic BOP look (Blonde, orange and pink). They're usually driven by the latest goss or being seen in the local trend spot.

Name: I love Oreland
Traits: They love Ireland. Everything in Ireland is great, it's why everyone comes here. They see themselves as great, funny and merry. Bit of craic even. They of course ignore the funny "Are you a drug dealer" look they get from the tourists when they mention craic.

I must say I'd probably fall into the last category mainly for a few reasons, all in all Ireland has its problems, but there are countries that have the same problems in larger quantities

Until we are the worst it isn't a problem!

Im probably a mixture between numbers one and two, what does that make me, some sort of mental pateint, no doubt.

Some pretty accurate obervations in there. Have you read 'All of The Popes Children' by that economist (David Mc Willuiam?) Its quite a good read, loads of characters like the above.

Well of course other types exist and depending on your perception on life (and also because I'd hope there are more then 4 types of people in ireland).

I fall into the most common breed in Oirlandt these days.... The recently dun well dude who flaunts the bling and is as common as muck...I sport a shaven head ,do press ups,work out of my office, a huge fcukin 4WD.I have three creases in the back of my neck,go to the Canaries three times a year and spend all my time in Irish bars and bring home a shed load of booze an fags.The kids never want for anything, the quad bike, the tan for First Communion,the tattoo on the shoulder blade and a set of arse antlers for the older one.The wife works part time in a hairdressers and I work for the Fire brigade and a bit of taxying at the weekend.
We are bringing the kids to Florida next year with the brother an his family ,the sister an her family,Auntie Julia ,Uncle john and Darren and his girlfriend and the twins.

We find Ireland very expensive to live in so we have a villa in Torrevieja and like to drink in Paddies Point and have a singsong every night

I'm in the last category, Ireland rocks and always will, I wish I was still living there and have major issues with living in England

I've been here for two years now and unfortunately, that's the way it has to be for now. Don't mind the English pople so much but I miss the real craic in Ireland and even the most Irish pub in Cambridge can't make up for it.

Type 4 as well. Love this country and hate the pricks who bemoan it. Sure, theres an awful lot of bollix about this land (and an awful lot of bollixes amongst its people) but were still some country. I remember the night of the WC final, Id been supporting France, but seein as Italy won and Temple Bar was packed out with them we decided to join the party, chatting up birds with drunken waffle about having Italian roots and having supported the team from the start (me bollix. Australia and Holland were the ones I wanted to initially win, and France in the latter stages. And Ive got about as much Italian ancestry as Saddam Hussein).

But what struck me was, although it was good craic and a good party, it wasnt a GREAT party. The sheer ecstasy and insanity of a street party if Ireland won the cup, it just wasnt there. We Irish would go crazier celebrating if we merely qualify for a tournament. Maybe it was because, being from the med, the vast majority of them had only been sipping a few beers and very few were outright drunk, but they really werent giving it socks quite as loudly as we would had we just saw Robbie Keane provide a hatrick in a 7-0 massacre of an England team who reached the final by a miracalous combination of dirty play and good luck. And the place emptied a little from 2am onwards- if it was an Irish celebration, we wouldnt have been home yet 3 days later when the team bus paraded down O`Connell Street. Sorry to say, but the med style 24 hour drinking would never encourage any type of responsibility- it would merely mean we would continue drinking until we eventually collapsed by 7am. Rather than hospitals filled with victims of fights, theyd just be filled with unconscious people who couldnt get up.
