So, what's your favourite Irish newspaper and why?

Please do not post why you dislike other papers, just the reason you like your preferred paper!

Also, I know many so called "Irish Newspapers are basically British with a few Irish stories thrown in but...

Also, max of 10 allowed so I've bumped sun/star/mirror together

I put down the Irish Times pretty much automatically, though to be honest it's no great shakes anymore. Don't read newspapers would have been more honest... internets all the way nowadays.

Yes, for me it's the Times. I use the internet for news (google news, RTE, BBC etc) but do find that for in-depth reporting on issues the newspapers beat most Irish news sites hands down.

I read the Irish times mostly because of the quality crossword and good enough articles.

I also read the Echo when i'm in Cork. On a tuesday mostly caus od the free adds section.

Internet news is good also but like the paper of an evening, when i'm sick of looking at computer screens.

Cup of tea, some bickies and the paper. Quality:)

Why no Irish Examiner or Irish News in the poll? They are both daily Irish papers.

Yeah, if you read my post you'll see that the poll only allows a max of 10 choices so I wanted to put in Sunday papers as these are the only papers that some people read.

If I left out the tabloids and British "Irish" papers some people would moan about that.

IMO, the Irish News is a Regional paper (big region, I know) with too low a circulation to qualify.

Irish examiner, yes I would have preferred to add that over the Daily Mail (:rolleyes: ) but I figured that my bias against the Daily Mail should not stop me adding it

So if you prefer these or other papers then feel free to add them in and say why you like them

I very seldom buy papers now - I usually use the net but if it's a Saturday and I'm popping in for a pint I'll usually buy the Times.

Dam the Leinster Express isnt there. How can any wednesday be complete without a list of who died in Stradbally, who won the over 80s bridge tourney in Ballyhupahawn and a good list of all tractors, trailers and corollas for sale in Ballybrittas.

Irish Times because i can't stand any of the other irish papers, generally i just read the london times though.

i buy the sun on a saturday for the tv guide. it covers most of the satellite channels that i watch. other than that it's the liffey champion (north kildare, lucan area). it's a good laugh to read the court reports. most weeks i'll recognise at least one name.

I used to love the reports in the Liffey Champion - From Lucan, went to NUIM so knew lots of people in the photos and also lots in the court reports

Classic was the guy caught stealing the TV from SuperMacs (The TV was directly underneath the CCTV camera! Doh!).

I think that local papers definitely have an edge for the funnier stories!

The Times all the way, though I prefer the rugby coverage in the Indo.
Favourite daily indulgence has to be a large latte and the times crossword, though I haven't done this in ages due to exams. Newspaper purchasing has had to be drastically cut back, though usually I'm a newspaper junkie.

I have to read the times on a Saturday though. Saturdays are incomplete otherwise.

Rarely buy a news paper on weekdays anymore, I just use www.breakingnews.ie. On Saturdays I almost exclusivley buy the Irish Times mainly for the opinion and sports pages.
Ocassionally I'll buy the Indo if they have an investigative report.

Irish Times is good, but lives on a bit of an ivory tower, and often is unnecessarily abusive towards the church.

That is pretty much a Cork paper so it can go into regional!

I read the Irish Indo because it's got a Berliner (small) sized one and I can't control the broad sheet size!

Sad fact is that even many internet sites are biased in their news opinions. The smaller news sites just don't have the credibility more often than not, especially if they are reporting regular news (not techie or specialist news).

Local papers can be quite good but yep, onl;y have to look at the list owned by the Indo to realise that they are not exactly going to be fair in local or general election time :rolleyes:

I love the Irish Times. The articles are really good, Fintan O'Toole's columns are always brilliant, and I loved Myers. Not enough for me to move to the Independent though; I went off them majorly due to their coverage of foot-and-mouth disease, of all things. I wouldn't rate tabloids at all as newspapers per se; the people I know who read them don't even consider them to be news sources. They are more about entertainment than news.

agree entirely with ya man. but at least were meant to be suspicious of the net seeing as any nutter can post. the main newspapers pretend they dont have an agenda when its obvious when you read one with any regularity that they do. my favorite was the indo and heralds coverage of the irish ferries dispute. i just cant figure out for the life of me why it was so sparse

plus the net does get stuff even the telly misses such as the coverage of the o connell street riots. youtube was brilliant on this. so while im not stupid enough to believe everything i read on the net i still reckon its the best shot of getting info the gov or the mainstream media dont want to cover (as in the mayday riots where the comishioner of the gardai came on rte and blamed the hippies for starting it, then the video footage they thought they confiscated turned up on the net clearly showing unnumbered gardai batton charging people and bashing em against the head. strangly enough the comishoner disapeared off the face of the earth for months after that:D )

The Irish Daily Mail as it's not too tabloidy. The articles are a good mix and you learn the odd interesting thing and its quick to read at morning break! I dont like the INDO or Times because their language is too high falutent.

It's not actually, the Guardian is published in Berliner format which is slightly larger than the Indo's compact size.
