I'm guessing this has been brought up before but I really didn't think an Irish person was capable of the shite that he comes out with.

Last night he referred to Ireland in the eurovision with - "The Irish" have done well (or whatever) and when referring to England he said "we have too often been the bridemaids."

Just to remind you:

Terry was born in Limerick, Ireland and educated at Crescent College, Limerick. After leaving college Terry went into banking where his innate ability to separate half crowns from two bob bits soon marked him down for greater things. Five years later, he joined Radio Telefis Eireann (the Irish National Radio and TV Service) as a newsreader/ announcer.

This is not gonna be news to anyone and most will say that Britain are welcome to him but By Christ it's annoying.

He's just as British as many who have ever played for the Irish soccer team are Irish and can use 'we'/'us' etc to mean Britain as much as he likes.

And it's Sir Terrence now.

The man is British!!!

He has a British passport and prefers to be called Sir Terence....hence the need for the quickie British Passport before he was to be knighted! or else under Irish citizenship laws or common sense he would have an honourary knighthood and would not be allowed to be called "Sir".

I realise he likes to play the "Irish" card when in Ireland and during interviews with irish stations but he made is career in the UK and everything about the man has been created due to the fact that hes more british than Irish.

Of course it must be slightly annoying for Irish people to listen to him....but what channel are they listening to him on anyway....the BBC!!!

Realistically hes about as British as Dick Van Dyke (chimney sweeper) from Mary Poppins....he tries his best but there will always be something different about him...buty thats what probable makes him such a hit with the British.

Being a plastic Brit has made him a millionaire and one of the most loved British personalities as well as having a massive middle aged middle Englander listnership.

You should try downloading some of his radio stuff or his podcast. I never thought I'd be into it, but he's a very funny, clever old geezer.

And he's probably been in England longer than he ever spent living here at this stage. Isn't he like, 200?

when he was on rossie he pointed out himself that he's from ireland,
re: the eurovision you can understand he's commentating for the british broadcasting society and their public, how confusing would it be to have him say "you were good (britain) we'll (irish) thats my we'll not your we'll be on in a minute"it would be confusing not to mention embarassing to hear the british entry referred to as foreigners on their own station.

If you were in Britain as long as he is and presenting a show on British radio broadcasting to British people, you would say 'we' too. It's not like he's denying his heritage or anything.

I downloaded his podcast a couple of times. I always try to listen to his show when I'm on holiday in the UK (and up!) but his podcast I found annoying because it's just constant Terry for half an hour! He does get on your nerves after a few minutes and you need the music in between I think to balance things out.

Yeah, I brought this issue up about Graham Norton too (who refered to the English royal family as "our"), but it's just something that happens; Wogan is british, he makes no qualm about that, he did seem to be half taking the piss out of Irish people on that Eurovision show last night, but nothing we wouldn't say about ourselves I guess.

Anyway, this kind of thing happens, it's a bit annoying when people switch to suit their audience (Mark Lawence, I'm looking at you), but if they do it, that's their own business... they should be slagged for it though

Exactly. It has nothing to do with him being Irish or English. His job is to report to the brits how the brits are doing. They don't want to hear him say "The English". They want to be able to relate to what he is saying.

To be honest, it's not so much his labelling himself British, it's the belittling of the Irish people that he takes so much pleasure in on his poxy eurovision shows. God knows I have a sense of humour but I don't like idiots who don't know whether they are coming or going and dictate everything they do and say in life by the gleam of the green $$$

Have you never noticed that he does exactly the same to every 'act' that appears in the Eurovision, and possibly even the UK entry too if its a good year. If anything hes much less harsh to a daft Irish act than he will be towards a similar performance from any other country.

Back in '95 a few of us were living in London, very close to Twickenham. On the morning of any big game, our local would be jammed with people on their way to the match.

Before an England vs Ireland game one day, we go in and there's Terry Wogan sitting at the bar. Of course the whole place is buzzing with people nudging each other going "See who it is!!".

One of the lads from the house, who was a bit of a space cadet in fairness, heads to the jacks and almost immediately comes running back out shouting "Jaysis lads, there's a fella taking a p*ss who's the head offa Terry Wogan!!!!". Whole pub fell around the place laughing.

I haven't watched every eurovision but I am pretty sure that every Irish person ever involved in it has thoroughly deserved all of Terry's belittling.

He takes the piss out of the whole thing and everyone involved, tbh I can't imagine it would still be on the air in Britain if it wasn't for that.

Of course Terry refers to the Uk entry as 'ours'. He is working for the BBC broadcasting to the UK. It's only natural that he is going to call the British entry 'ours'. Common sense really.

I have a lot of respect for the man tbh - most listened to breakfast show in the UK for years and years. Big Irish success story and so many people begrudge him his success.

Wasn't he involved in century radio when that was on the air? I think he was a shareholder and had a weekend show. There was uproar when it came out that he recorded the show in London and didn't come over here to do it. Irish people can be so petty and small minded.
