Members of the travelling community calling to the door

Do any of you have problems with travellers begging at the door? Had the same kid call to the door *3 fecking times* in the one day... don't think telling him to FO and not come back would be a good idea lest he comes back with his ten brothers and robs me car or something... any tips for getting rid of them?

I never really have to deal with tis for some reason, I think its because I live in the inner city, Anyways, I went to school with travellers, some of them nice some of them not.

My Dad worked with them years, and he said the same thing, a lot of them are decent people and the rest are scum, just like any other community in the country.

One thing I always remebered about school is this fella I think he was in the year below me, big thick loud accent on him, tiny little scrawny fella always immaculetly (?) presented, always stuck out in a crowd, little charmer, lots of settled girls fancied him aswell, so anyway was on the bus coming home from school and he was sitting infornt of me, I got off went home and then went into town later that day. To my astonishment there was the boy sitting on henry street under a filthy blanket, filthy face and no shoes on begging for money. WTF. I still see him every now and agin begging.

I would say also that there are the good and bad element in the travelling community but its the same as in all communities.You just have to be wary and use your own judgement to pick out the shady characters.Personally i have had 10 times the amount of bad experiences with skangers than travellers,but there is another thread for that.

If you ignore them, they do some terrible things to property. Its not the case with 100% of the travelling community but there is a massive percentage of travelling people who feel it is ok to feed off the settled people and have zero respect for us or our property.

Ahh finally someone with a bit of sense whos argument doesn't revolve around calling me names.

Ok first up there was a huge thread on travellers before here. It got moved to humanities forum and locked shortly afterwards, loads of people banned from that forum and rule put in place for some months not to open threads on the subject.

This is kind of how heated it gets. Which is why I am not being overly active in this thread. What has been bandied around before as gospel a lot of it has been debunked. Check the thread, numerous links to various traveller related information.

For example to a traveller, "traveller community" refers to a linage of people, not to "someone in a caravan". There are numerous travellers living in houses (and normal jobs) and of those who still live in caravans a low percentage actually move around (seasonal) and an even lower percentage actually are illegally halting.

Of course there are touble makers, and from what I read researching on the last thread the travelling community of a whole aren't overly impressed with this minority either.

However come running onto a halting site threatening everyone there with violence hardly helps anyone. I mean how would feel that someone firebombed your house because another person four doors down ripped them off?

That is what we are equating here and it just amazes me that people go on about how terrible travellers on and then go on to condone murdering, attacking or setting travellers homes on fire or into rivers (see other thread).

This is a common scam going on for years. Back when I was a kid there was a guy in Finglas actually paying local kids to do it.

My brother gave them money when they called a few times. Stopped, then they stole our bicycle and hedgecutter out of the garage.

Just tell them sorry and close the door nowadays. Can't give them an inch or they'll **** you over.

Went to school with a few of them that were sound. But they didn't go around peoples houses nicking ****.

I just had three of them at my door on Tuesday afternoon. There were 2 kids and an older guy in his 20's walking down the street, nosying around peoples houses. I was getting suspicious of them cos I live in a cul de sac at the back of an estate. One of them spotted my mothers new caravan in our driveway and they called to the door. The older guy asked me if my parents were home and I said no, so they said they'd be back later. We moved the caravan to my relatives out the country that evening.

My house is built on the bank of a river, there is a common ground just beside our land. We tend to get alot of the travelling community coming over on to our land when swimming. It's not too bad though. They wont do anything. My mam knows most of 'em, and their mothers, so if they do anything, they'd get an earful from their mammies :P

initiating violence or threatening behaviour is obviously worse than responding in kind, it's facile to equate them. in this thread we only seem to have examples of travellers doing the former.

My point was regardless of who initiated it taking the law into your own hands is not the way to go. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably doesn't belong in society.

I read your posts with an open mind cos I believe that you should be allowed your voice and maybe you havn't seen everything.... but the above statement is wrong. And I could point out a million and one examples where this is wrong. For example anywhere where the same values of the law aren't the same as our own. All the genocide cases and various acts like it where it is done by the "lawmakers" of their society. Slavery in the US, ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe, Religious fighting in Africa. Are people just supposed to sit there and take it???

Usually your posts are well thought out. The above one was just plain stupid. We're a republic becuase of some men taking the law into their own hands. I have lots of respect for the law. More than most in fact, but if it came to it I would have no problem taking the law into my own hands, if there was no other course of action. And not you or anyone else can tell me I do not belong in society.

So you are saying that if someone mugs you or cheats you out of something that you are allowed to go around to a general area where that person may live and firebomb thier house? Or threaten to shoot someone because you refuse to pay for something they have done in relations of services for you?

These are the kinds of examples thrown around as if doing this makes you the hero.

You follow the law. If the law doesn't work then you check through legal methods to ensure that if it is not enough then something is done about it. Do you know who your TD for the area is? Do you know when thier forum is open? Do you have a local community group? Do you have a lawyer? Do you know who your local Gardai are? Do you actually contribute to the community instead of pissing and whining and claiming that its justifible to hurt, maim or be prejudiced against people who may not even be involved in what you are upset about.

Claiming that taking back the nation is equal to this.. well its the stupidist justification I have heard to date.

Giving excuse that this is valid because of Irish troubles is total BS.

No, but if someone tries to mug me I'd feel perfectly entitled to hit/kick them to get them away from me. And if I broke their nose or ankle in the process I'd feel perfectly justified.

Look, anyone who thinks that ALL travellers are violent, dangerous, thieving low-lives is a ****ing idiot. I have worked in housing and some of the nicest, most decent people I have met through this experience are travellers. However, there does seem to be a culture of crime and violence within a large element of the travelling community. Obviously poverty, illiteracy, underage parenthood and a general sense of being marginalised by settled society are all factors and there's obviously a nurture v nature thing going on. Kids learn such behaviour and it's a vicious circle. But those travellers who do behave despicably shouldn't be treated as victims because of their misfortune. I feel sorry for decent members of the travelling community who are given a bad name by these thugs, but instead of them moaning about how badly they're treated, they should maybe consider tackling those members of their community who are tainting their good name.

I have lots of respect for the law. More than most in fact, but if it came to it I would have no problem taking the law into my own hands, if there was no other course of action. And not you or anyone else can tell me I do not belong in society.

Anyone who wishes to act outside the law belongs in prison, not in society. Self-defence would be acceptable, however pre-emptively going after someone or going after someone yourself simply out of vengience is outside the law.

There are 3 caravans parked down the road from us for the last year and a bit. The travellers are always going around the houses peeking in windows in broad daylight and at night.
Last year one of the neighbours photographed 2 of the travellers walking out of another neighbours house with his belongings.
Case closed you would think.
The photo was given to the gards and the victim calmed down so he wouldnt attack the travellers.
Nothing has happened to the travellers at all. I have a friend in the gards and he tells me nothing will.
But get this. The victim of the robbery got mighty pissed off last month when one of the guys in the photo called to his house looking for water and screamed blue murder at him.
That evening he's (the victim of the robbery) hauled down the station and told that he better be careful or else there will be action taken against him.
Read into that what you will, but IMHO there are double standards here.
