Gone unregistered for this.. obviously.

I have a heart problem. I don't know what it is. Doctors don't know what it is. I know this is a medical forum, and I'm not seeking medical advice, more advice in general.

As I was saying, the doctors don't know what is wrong with me. Basically I get palipitations for absolutely no reason. The normal heartbeat is about 20 beats in 15 seconds, I'd get 49. This is normally associated with longdistance sprinters. I'd get this doing rest, or even just bending over. Something stupid like that. Recently I went to the doctors in the college about it, and they hooked me up to a blood pressure machine. I am unsure as to what the exact figures were, but the nurse commented on the fact that my blood pressure remained normal, something she found odd.

I have been to the hospital before; I've had an echocardiogram, ECG, heart-monitors.. and everything came back normal. And yet.. i'm still getting these racing heartbeats. And over the past 2 days I've been getting stinging chest pains.

Heres the point of the thread. I am afraid of going to the college doctors again, as I just don't think they'd think me seriously. I am afraid that they would think I'm a hypocondriac. Which I guess I somewhat am in some regards. Yet everytime I've been in there it was really something.. I went in there when I had severe sidepains.. turned out to be a bad inflamation of my chest and ribs.. but they ended up sending me into the hospital for an xray.. to check if I had a lung clot. I also went there when I had astmha problems (I never could spell that).

I just don't know what to do really

It's starting to bother me.

If you've been what sounds like throughly investigated then somebody was taking it seriously, just seems like nothing serious turned up. A good thing. The next step is to find out what is the cause, it probably isn't anything barn-door or really common. So it may take some time to find out, but it should be resolved.
You're not a hypochondriac if you actually do have palpitations, if you didn't then maybe you would be!

Don't be afraid of going to the college doctors again. You want to get it sorted and that's what they're there for..they have to take you seriously! Perhaps go to a different doc and get another opinion!

Go back to the college doc and tell them along with the rapid heartbeat that for the last couple of days you have been getting the stinging in your chest,they will have no need to think of you as a hypochondriac. If they decide that you need to go for more tests,when you get the results sit down with the doc and make sure you get reassurance from them that it's not anything more serious than a rapid heart beat:)

Go and get advice from another doctor whom you can trust. If they don't know what the problem is then they should get in touch with a cardiologist who will know better. About 10 years ago i had a similar problem. One day i just had a really high pulse rate - it was about 210 which is similar to someone doing intense fitness training. I was staying still though and couldn't understand what the problem was. I went to the gp and they refered me to a cariologist and i ended up in hospital for a week. They put me on beta blockers for the whole week to slow down my heart and did loads of tests which all came back negative. Evenually my palpitations stopped and my heart rate went back to normal. The doctor told me that it was probably a virus which attacked the heart directly. I haven't had any problems yet but i would seriously look into it asap. If your heart rate stays high for a long period of time you will eventually do permanent damage to it...

You need to get them to hook you up with a portable ECG monitor, which you will wear for a few days and it will record your patterns.

SEE A CONSULTANT. and if the first one doesn't know see another.

One of the doctors in the hospital thought it could be a problem called Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT for short). See here for info http://www.advocatehealth.com/system/info/library/articles/heartcare/common/supratac.html

Yet since they have never caught it they can't make a proper diagnosis. I might be dropping into the doctors next week, checking what my bloodpressure and pulse was when it happened, and going straight into the hospital myself. It would probably cost more, but if i do it through a doctor, I'll probably have to wait months!

Go to the nearest a & e tomorrow and tell them about it. A few years ago I had similar symptoms, the doctors hooked me up to every machine imaginable and they were baffled by the results, they even brought down the head of the hospital (which scared me) who had seen nothing like it in 20 years of medicine. At one point there were 7 doctors examing me. For 5 days I lay in bed imagining the worst possible outcome. I don't want to go into cause but one of the junior doctors by chance diagnosed that it wasnt my heart, it was still serious but during those 5 days when I thought it was my heart a sense of hypocondrea set in thinking my heart was going to jump out of my rib cage. I imagine you maybe experiencing some slight hypocondrea at the moment. Its probably nothing BUT SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE.

I'm actually beginning to get a bit worried now..

I was out in a nightclub when suddenly I started getting these extremely bad chest pains. Completely out of the blue. It hurt when I took deep breaths, and it hurt when I moved. Everyone thought I was being unsociable, 'cause I wasn't moving. Damn em :P

Anyways, the pain continued on for a few minutes, went and came back. So I get fed up, and take a cab home. I get almost home. Am sitting down in the seat. When all of a sudden I get a palipitation. With the chest pain.

Every website I have looked at (I know its a bad idea to do that) has said that when you get chest pains with palipation, to consult a medical service immediately. I might call in tomorrow morning, just to see what they say. But I'm sorta worried about it, because if its anything serious, and they keep me in, they're going to be buggered in work .. Oh I dunno.

For the love of God, your first post was a week ago and everyone told you to go to a doctor then. You ignored everyones advice, and a week later you experience more chest pains and your first impulse is to post on the net and expect unqualified people on a website to tell you whats causing it. GO TO A DOCTOR ffs, they're qualified for dealing with things like this and will know your medical history. Chest pains are not always a result of heart problems, it can be many different things, like a partial collapse of the lung, which would cause palipitations and the symptoms you described, or if you're a smoker.

.See a proper doctor,there's loads out there and if they dont take you seriously,go see another one. Heart Consultants in the mater are pretty brill and I garuntee if you go see any of them and describe your sympoms they will take you pretty damn seriously.

Not to be harsh or anything, but what do you want us to do about it? You know this isn't a medical forum, we cannot and will not offer you medical advice. You say you're worried and freaking out and follow it with "I *might* call in tomorrow"? Cop on. If you're that worried, go to the doctors NOW, like everybody has been advising you. To keep posting about it is utterly pointless. Forget about work and just think about yourself this once.

If you're concerned about being taken for a hypochondiac, then write down a list of all your concerns and show it to the doctor. Try to include dates and what you were doing at the time too.
