I've posted a problem in the Computing Section. (but I know there are a lot more eyes around After Hours)

If anyone here feels they're a dab hand at the oul tech support, could you please have a read in the Computing Section & give me some suggestions cos I'm beat

when 2 sticks of RAM are in the machine is it not true that it will only be as quick as the lowest spec stick.

also with DDR the 2 sticks have to be the same (2*512 or 2*256 etc) is it the same with SD?

No, this is NOT true. It should be as quick as stick one plue stick 2, unless the maximum Ram limit of the motherboard / bios (not sure which controls this) is less than the chips you're putting in.

I.E. PC limited to 256MB ram (128 per port)
If you put in two 256MB Chips in each port, the most ram you can expect is still 256MB

sorry to use an old saying here but it's only as fast as it's slowest piece

ie no point gettin some 100mb/s cable when the router to sever is only a 10mb/s line. the max speed will be 10mb/s no matter what.

I work with this stuff every day. (which is why I'm so p!ssed off that I can't solve this particular prob, anyway....)

I'm right. 1000% If you have a 32MB chip of ram, you have a spare slot, you decide to upgrade, you buy a 64MB chip.

you won't still have 32MB of ram (what'd be the point of you buying a new chip), you now have 96MB of Ram.

There is no question whether this is right or wrong, this is 1000% correct

In my frustration last night, I tried all versions of Ram in the PC.
(Have 2 old 16MB chips lying around also.

I put 1 32Mb in, surprisingly, I had 32MB ram.
I put 2x32 in, I had 64 MB ram.
I put a 16 & a 32 in, I had 48MB ram.
All of these working.
(So, doesn't the last one prove that I'm right?? or is what you're trying to say something different??)
I also put the 256MB in with the 32MB, & yes, this didn't work (for whatever so far, unexplained reason) the Bios still read that the PC had 288 (well actually 287) MB of ram installed, not 32MB (as some of you are suggesting it should.)

If you can, just explain to me why I'm wrong & I'll back down, no prob.

&, as an aside, this isn't really solving my actual prob, is it?

This is Afterhours, you won't get many serious replies on a thread that has been put on this forum simply to pimp another thread that you have on the computer forum.

It's simply not on doing that just for more "eyes" to see your problem. Imagine if even one tenth of threads started on boards were duplicated on to Afterhours - I reckon that would fill up a couple of pages on the forum wouldn't you?

Stick to the Comp section then and they'll tell you why your wrong/right. In here we don't really care. This is not pc speak! Ever think of running as a politician? (they're never wrong either) :rolleyes:

I didn't intend for people to post here.
I hoped, those who know a bit about It (but maybe don't regularly look at the computing section) would see this, go to computing & reply to be there, with some proper advice, not the nonsense that has went on here.

Yes, this thread has been here long enough & not one person can give any suggestions, so feel free to lock, move, dump in recycle bin, whatever.

Chrissy, I had a similar problem myself once. I had a relatively new system, had a 128 and a 64 in it, cant remember the type of RAM though. So then I got a stick of 512 and swapped it with the 64 and was told on boot up that I had something like 384Mb of RAM.... Where that number came from I'll never know! But I never got the full 640 out of the two...and the max capacity was 1 gig so that wasn't the problem with me either.

RAM is finnicky stuff! What happens if you put just the 256 in? And try that in both slots for troubleshooting reference.

Absolutely nothing happens.
PC won't start in any way, the monitor light won't even turn to green.
The fan spins, the hard drive thinks about doing something for a second & then nothing, it just sits there.

the only way I can it to boot (even though not a successful boot) is to have the 32 in the 1st slot & the 256 in the 2nd slot.

Very interesting... there's are sometimes control options in the bios for individual RAM slots. But to be honest i think irlrobin has answered your question in your original thread. It has to be a problem with the 256 stick, maybe its simply faulty, or like irlrobin said it needs a specific chip on it. The problem is there, so contact some suppliers and ask around!

Yea, the chip's not faulty as I've put it in another PC no prob.

I've emailed the website he mentioned, but I suppose unless I promise to send some yo-yo's their way, I'll hear nothing back.

I'm just already out €150ish, don't want to be out more, but it looks like that's going to be the case.
