Who would go to see brokeback mountain?

Just heard on the news that brokeback moutain has won some british film awards. Also it's likely to win a load of Oscars also. My question is who the hell would watch it. I mean unless you are actually gay - would you go to see a film about two gay cowboys?

Is this just a case of the film industry congratulating itself rather than a film actually being good?

... he just comes across as a hateful person whose "opinions" are just prejudice. And I think that's what people aren't liking about his attitude. I don't think anyone would have a problem with someone avoiding B.M. 'cos they don't like the idea of seeing gay sex (e.g. Seamus) or because it just doesn't appeal to them (e.g. HavoK). They're perfectly reasonable and aren't offensive, but jimmy seems to just dislike gay people. And in my book that's not cool.

TWhile I see the point that you are trying to make, it doesn't really make sense when you see the film. Brokeback Mountain is not really about two men falling in love. It is about them tryin g to deal with what happened to them on the mountain in later life. It could not possibly be about a man and a woman because if it were a regular relationship, there would be no problem. They could just shack up together. The film is about them trying to deal with the impossiblity of their situation.

So it could only be done with two men.

Well, if you don't like the sound of it, you're probably right to stay away. I thought the first bit (when they're on the mountain) could have been executed better. However, there was some searing intensity and emotion in the rest. I enjoyed the movie.

BTW, why is thread in After Hours? There is a perfectly good film forum.

but the relationship between a man and a woman is completley different than the relationship between two closet gay cowboys, their mindstate is different, the values they were brought up with are different, the characters are completley different.

i went to see nakedness there was very little mostly it was incomfortable to watch and got boring after a while
even if it had have been about a straight couple i would have lost interest

If you want you can close your eyes when they kiss. I promise you, your eyes will be closed for less than 5 minutes of the movie. There's more straight sex in this movie than gay - and there isn't a whole lot of sex either way.

It's an excellently crafted movie. It's nothing to do with hollywood politics, hollywood has come down hard on some recent gay-themed movies, or movies with gay characters, and rightly so because they were crap. This one isn't.

Something tells me it'll do a lot better on DVD than even its (admittedly very good) cinema takings suggest. Though the showing I was at was a very mixed - and big - crowd.

I'm at a loss to understand how you magically jumped over the moon to come to the conclusion that I dislike Gay people simply for asking who the film appeals to. How is Seamus not anti-gay if he doesn't like seeing gay sex scenes? No doubt if the actors had been black you would be coming to the conclusion that I would be racist also.

This film is likely to win a lot of awards at the Oscars but I think it is a bit like the Bush re-election - it may win but not by way of the popular vote.

It is the hype surrounding this film that annoys me and I'm getting straight to the point in asking the question. It's a very topical question because of the hyped gay factor otherwise I'd be asking who would go to see Bridget Jones apart from women and anyone else who likes to wears tents for knickers.
