Very interesting rumour RE: immigrants

I'd love if someone out there could shed light on this. I just learned about it this evening and can't say whether it's true or not.

Apparently, foreign nationals are given cars if claim they are being harrassed on public transport.

The social welfare is said to be sending out those who claim continued racial abuse on public transport, to select a car (within a budget of course) from a dealer whereupon they will tax and insure it for 3 months, and the new owner must then take over these overheads after this time.

The person who told me seemed to know a great deal about it, and it's supposed to be common knowledge among the immigrant community.

Is there anyone out there who works in the social, or who knows more about this, that would be in a position to confirm or deny the above?

That's correct. A variation I heard was a Cork Taxi, which also could not accomodate the fictitious buggy!

There is a lot of claptrap surrounding people of other nationalities. The insular attitudes and old wives tales of some people (is it me or is it more common among the older generation?) are very destructive and responsible for more racist attacks and lack of understanding than any skin head neo nazi freak could ever hope to achieve...:mad:

apparently not, my mate works in a shop and takes in checks all the time, though only from regulars. Dont know how it works but they are not in his name and he can cash them.

Funny - I was reading the paper this morning and they were giving out about the absurd PC-ness of people and the media in particular when it comes to dealing with stories regarding minorities... Why is it that when a guy posts a question regarding a rumour that implies that his hard earned taxes are misspent that everyone jumps on the PC brigade instead of discussing the nature of the question?

Perhaps its foney, perhaps not(as was testified and ignored earlier on in the thread) but it is amazing how people shy away from an argument which implies a race/minority to be at fault even if they are known to be...

An example of this (according to the paper) is where people generally refer to youths having unprotected sex as a major cause of the HIV boom in the UK whereas it was actually more to do with the amount of immigrants coming in from HIV "infested" parts of Africa at the time.
It's off topic, I know but interesting none the less...

Oh yeah, and notice how we in Ireland have no health checks on those coming from African nations known to have high levels of HIV!!

I heard something similar, quite a while back. It was regarding what they get in 'setup' costs in Ireland. The Irish government claim they only give out x amount per week to them.
There was a family that used to live next door to me - the father was buying and selling cars regularly.

That bull doesn't wash with me.

Not my point at least. I hate political correctness as much as I hate racism. The pendulum has swung from unashamed apartheid to a situation where Christmas cannot be mentioned as it may offend the sensibilities of other religious groups. This is ridiculous, especially in an age where Muslim fundaMENTALists are allowed free reign to spread race hatred. Why can the views of those in authority not settle in a happy compromise, as opposed to veering from one crazy extreme to another? (This is not an Irish issue of course, but an international one).

That sounds a little unfounded. Judging by the state of public order today, I think it more likely to be drink fuelled stupidity than a massive influx of African disease.

Health checks, however cursory, were a facet of the huddled masses at Ellis Island in the 1800s. They should still be so today, for all asylum seekers or anyone who attempts to entry the country with a passport they made using mspaint in a Lagos internet cafe...

Thats because its not in our favour. They are hardly going to go shouting about it, when they know the Irish will go awol because we have beg for help of any kind. You would be doing well to find such articles in print. Even if you do find something related, it will be quite sketchy to say the least. In the town I live in, I've seen Irish mothers coming from the social welfare office with the shi.ttest of prams etc. they only have a certain allowance that the welfare will chip in. then the foreign mothers come out with the best of gear. its a farce.

I've seen enough now in the last 2yrs to make me think twice.

Very true, people will lap up the free car/buggy/mansion stories only if they are subconsiously suspicious or untrusting of immigrants, which many are due to programming by their parents or friends.
The fact is all of these claims come to nothing, no media attention, no solid proof other than "my friend" stories, but people are willing to accept them as fact. They might not be so quick in other situations.

I bet if you told one of the above stories to some people down the pub they'd say "that's typical" rather than "where did you hear this from?". It's a mixture of slight racism, xenophobia, and a distrust of the government (a very Irish trait). You can kill/hate the two birds with one stone when it's a sponger asylum seeker getting something for nothing off the softy whimp government, right?

The article I was referring to was in the Metro newspaper - theres' no online source but I'll try and grab one on the way home and scan in the article tomorrow. It was interesting enough and it is falling on the back of alot of resentment being felt over here due to the obvious lengths the govt are going to bend over backwards to accomodate foreign cultures. (Such as removing teddy piglets from the post office as it offends Muslims, etc...)

So what you're telling me is this;
It's common knowledge that asylum seekers get free fancy stuff like prams, so common that people like you know about it without having to do any research at all.
It's so damaging to the government that they know they can't talk about it too clearly.
And yet the media, full of people who hate the government (or just want to be the ones to claim credit for bringing a politician down), are unable or unwilling to report on the issue? Please.

If it's happening, there would be a paper trail. The government might not advertise it but anyone half bothered could find out under the FoI or just by asking questions. People could also ask these spongers where they got the flash gear, but no one seems to be bothered with that either.

I tell you what, if I believed the government were up to something this dodgy I'd be all over it like a rash, but I know they're not.

The Irish people have a long history of emigrating to other countries looking for work, if this was still the bad old times in the 70s and 80s a lot of people posting here would be emigrating or considering it.

Keep this in mind when you hear people talking about the latest foreigner scams and such like.

In fairness they would get free stuff like prams and clothes. It is reasonable they would as we have a duty of care to these alysum seekers. Cars are another issue. These goods would not be easy to come by and would take a lot of effort but they would be free.
If I washed up on a shore and asked for asylum I would expect clothes etc... A car is on the large side but some cliam being as pushy and needy as you can will mean you can get one is some peoples' belief. I find it doubtfull but a subsidsed car seem possible
JUst keep a tab running and when Nigeria gets going they can pay us the eqivialant in oil at todays prices. This may actually benifit us in the long run.

Ok here's an update. The guy who told me said it was mostly Nigerians who were availing of this and other benefits. Those who can work here obviously don't qualify. I can only assume he means it's asylum seekers who get cars from that.

On a side note, but relevant, he also mentioned the very well documented and publicised "socialising allowance" that asylum seekers are awarded to enabled them to integrate with the Irish culture.

That was all over talk shows when it was first introduced and perhaps the "cars" thing has spawned from this?

If that Nigerian was a citizen and on the One Parent Family Allowance she actually would be entitled to get another new pram from the Community Welfare Officer.

However I dont know her full circumstances.

I have googled, and have seen more submissions to that effect on a bulletin board or two. If you want urls I will happy post them, however, the contributors do not give any reference for such information, therefore it should be taken anecdotally, as should mine, and left to the reader to form an opinion.
ISTR an article mentioning the car insurance issue appearing in the Sindo recently, given their handling of the Lawlor story, among other things, that may be not be a good thing.
