Why did Bibi Baskin move to India?

It seems she's running a holiday cosmetic surgery center in India.

For those of you under the age of 18, she was being lined up as Gay Byrne's replacement (not Pat Kenny).

I know she was close to a man who F***ed up massively and fled to the US (very, very dark story). Was that the reason, or was she just fed up of her massive RTE salary?

It's one of these strange things that pop up in RTE every now and again; Bunny Carr syndrome.

Oh yeah, I remember her- the oldish red haired one - she presented a Saturday night talk show over the Summer a few years ago.

In the early 1990's (ask you Grandparents) she was the second most popular Irish broadcaster. It was pretty much accepted that she was going to take over from Gay Byrne. And then, poof-she was gone. Only to turn up in India attempting to run a decaying colonial hotel.

Let me put it this way, Imagine Pat Kenny/or Ryan Turbidy (is that his name?) signed off on a season of the Late late Show, and he never came back. Then, a few months later, he turned up as a porter in a hotel in Afghanistan. That's how strange it is.

It seems to me, she was sent into some kind of exile. I know she was close to a guy who did VERY, VERY bad things. ( I'm not saying that's the reason, but it was contingent-in terms of timing, upon the revelations). I kown she was close to an actress as well, but who would care about that.

You really have to be 30+ to appreciate how bizarre this is.

She left Ireland (at a time when she was the fourth most high profile person in Ireland), behind Gay Byrne, Bono and Albert Reynolds...........for about as far away as you could get.

Why?

I'm guessing some people are remembering this for the first time in years and are wondering as well.

Her departure wasn't quite that sudden - it's often forgotton she went to the UK to host an afternoon show for ITV as I recall. Smallish Open House-type magazine programme that was on at around 1.30pm for an hour or so.
She did this for at least a year, if not longer - c.1997. She had already left RTÉ by then it seems.

Then she came back to RTÉ for a summer stint c.1998 presenting 'The Saturday Show' which aired at 9.25pm through till 10.45 or so, as a filler for Kenny Live. (This was in the filler era of 'Kennedy' with Mary Kennedy and 'Saturday Live', etc)
But this was only a token gesture - she had already left at that stage.

I remember her explaining all on the radio with Pat or someone. Essentially she just had enough of television, and wanted to try something different. I think it's an upmarket B&B she operates in India. What association does she have with the centre you link to Romo?
