Should there be zero tolerance by Gardaí towards scumbags?

The streets are gone fúcking crazy, there's no two ways about it. Ive been to New York 3 times and felt safer at night there than I do at 3 in the morning in Temple Bar.

If you look at countries like Turkey and Italy there is no sinister feeling at night when people fall out into the streets of the capital locked. Why? Because the law enforcement takes no sh*te and simply knocks the bollix out of any troublemakers. The Guards here are becoming a lazy pathethic joke, that story on the front page of the Star a couple of days back about about 2 UK girls been attacked twice in one night just highlights this.

In the past 3 or 4 months things are feeling dodgy night and day in and around O Connell St and I just think something needs to be done before there's a lunchtime mugging or worse.

I have to agree again with New York been safer. I once lost a friend in Times Square at 5am and felt ok. The cops take no shíte.

The law is far too soft on the little knackers that litter this city. A few weeks ago some scumbags started throwing stones at my DAD ffs, the guy is built like a ****in tank from years of workin as an electrician..he couldve pulled thier heads off, but it just goes to show they have no respect, or fear, of elders anymore. I know that makes me sound like some misty eyed old timer, but its true.
I honestly think something that would serve this country well, is if everyone was made serve a mandatory year in the army at the age of 18, like in Sweden. it might serve to put some manners and respect on kids.
So to answer the quation, yes guards should have a zero tolerance policy, and issued proper WEAPONS. At least some form of a deterrant. Glad im in Berlin at the moment, i plan on moving here for a while next year for more study, hopefully i wont have to come back

Some day you won't care what other people think of you and serving a year in the army would be terrible. I certainly wouldn't want my kids serving for a poxy army.

I dont care what people think of me, im saying anyone who DOES look different in any way is usually pointed out and laughed at by most knackers. And a year stint in the army doesnt seem to have done sweden any harm

Totally agree that everyone should have to do a year in the army! This would put manners and respect on alot of people. The gardai today are a joke, ok some of them are decent,but the law dosent help them either. For Example, he sees a "scumbag" up to something minor, why wud he bother bringing him in when he knows that he will just get off with a warning and be back out the next night doing the same thing.

I was in USA for the summer, and the cops over there are built like tanks! I know i wudnt act the pri** if i saw them around. I came back to Dublin and i see cops that are 45 years old, a beer belly and slouched across a chair. Hardly intimidating!

When i read in the paper about the librarian being beaten up and the guys getting 12 weeks in prison, it made me sick (im from Sligo also, where the victim was from). So tomorrow night i can go out and kick someone within an inch of my life and because i dont have a previous record i will wake free from jail after a few weeks! Can everyone, including the judge and the politicans not see that this is apauling!!! Absolute Joke!

Ireland is a beautiful country, there is just a few things that i totally hate about it. And zero tolerance is one of the ways to improve it! But typically the Government wont do anything until SERIOUS lobbying is done! I think we need to look at who we are electing for Governement and the simple fact is that they aint good enough! (but thats a different story)

I'd go a step further and say you could kick someone to death and you will only end up serving a few years in prison.

I think we should take a zero tolerance approach. By zero tolerance I mean if the Guards see someone pissing against a wall they are fined on the spot or arrested.

If someone is drinking on the street then they should be fined on the spot or arrested.

If someone cannot get away with drinking on the street he will think twice about getting away with hitting someone.

The problem in implementing this is an understaffed and demoralised Garda force that also has its fair share of waster's.

This combined with a court system that doesn't punish offenders and jails that can't fit offenders means we will have to put up with the current system for a long time to come.

But as always we will still vote for the politicians that gave us this system in the first place.

You all seem to be missing the point. Zero Tolerance would be a disaster. I hear you (the general you) complaining about Temple Bar, so imagine this:
3:45am, Temple Bar. Gardai foot patrol walking through Temple Bar. They approach the Hard Rock cafe were some young lad is releaving himself. Meanwhile a group of thugs are kicking another lad within an inch of his sences outside the banklink on the square.

Zero tolerance will mean the Guards arrest and cart off the young lad having a piss. What will happen the other lad? The Guards aren't going to arrive on the scene for over a half an hour, as they've to arrest someone for pissing. Is this the way you want it? :rolleyes:

I think having adequate numbers of Guards would solve the problem. Also the Guards can throw him into the back of a ( paddy wagon

) and not have to leave the scene. Plus your forgetting the on the spot fine aspect.

As it is the guards are not there at all. So this not arriving on the scene for half an hour is already a reality.

The main point is that if you know you’re not going to get away with pissing on the street you’re not going to do it. Let alone get involved in a brawl. Take a look at NYC it worked their.

But like I said I doubt the government would ever put the resources into it.

Traders act to clean up image of Temple Bar

With the Christmas party season under way Dublin's Temple Bar is moving to rid itself of its image of excessive, sometimes inappropriate, revelry.

Traders who have banded under the acronym TASCQ - Traders in the Area Supporting the Cultural Quarter - have launched a "Play Nice" campaign to encourage partygoers as well as hoteliers and pub owners to be mindful of the fact that some 3,000 people live in the inner city enclave.

The campaign wants to eliminate bad behaviour. This includes noise, particularly at night; excessive alcohol consumption; public urination and littering.

A publican's charter, to which many of the pubs in Temple Bar have signed up, provides for staff training and a co-ordinated approach to security with security personnel wearing name badges and operating on a fixed short-wave radio "open channel".

Traders will also attempt to shift the focus from drinking to cultural shows, including poetry readings. Signs indicating that toilets are for patrons use only are to be removed, with additional signs going on display telling patrons they are being monitored by video.

Dublin Bus, which at one time had plans to build a bus station in the area, said it was "delighted to be part of a new initiative".

The company said its Nitelink bus service was available for many of the people who frequent Temple Bar and it also offered a "city bus tour" in the area.

Play Nice aims to improve further the local environment "for all who live in, work or visit Temple Bar, by improving training standards in licensed premises, educating visitors on what is acceptable behaviour and by working more closely with the gardaí and the city council", said a spokeswoman.

I feel the same. Having grown up on the 'mean streets of Dublin' I know only all too well what its like. Now I live in a beautiful suburb in Melbourne with very little crime.

I can walk around Melbourne CBD after dark with my wife and baby on the weekend and STILL feel safe.

I will NEVER return to Dublin to live. Life here is too good.

That is a remarkable success story indeed, shows with polititions with balls in charge sustained change can happen even in the "big city".

I could be wrong but I always thought the Lord Mayor position was a largely ceremonial position. You only hold the post for a year - if it was a position with power, it's a ridiculously short amount of time to be able to introduce any meaningful reforms.
