Pint Glass Thing

Hey all,

Does anyone know what the logo on pint glasses stands for?? It's a small white circle near the top, with a squiggle in the middle of the circle and 2 numbers in it!?

Does it serve any purpose? I tried to find a pic on the net but i couldn't!!

It's a government stamp, from weights and measures (or whatever they're called now)... The double digit refers to the year the glass was made, i.e. 04=2004, and the other number is the batch number the glass is from. Legally all pint and half pint glasses are supposed to have them...

Funny how a 500ml ( 7/8 pint) of draught Guinness just fits into a pint glass.

Pubs ripping us off as usual - on the Guinness front at least. And don't give me the line about the head being part of the pint - if it was, the 500ml can would fill seven eighths of the pint glass, including the head.

I always thought that the line was a pint.... Ie, where the liquid should go to, and the rest of the glass should be head. Meaning that people who don't have head on their pint would be getting more. In england they don't have it on glasses, and normally fill to the top.

Not quite true. Both kinds of glasses exist there, i.e. pint to the brim and pint to the line. It depends a lot on the area you're in whether the locals like their pints with or without a head. I was a student in Manchester where, by and large, beer was served with little or no head, therefore glasses were a pint to the brim. Then I moved to Nottingham, not that far away, where a good sized head was the norm, and where you'd send a pint back if it didn't. There they had lines on the glasses about 1cm from the brim.

The head is air-filled foam (essentially). Let the head die down, and you'll that there's about 1/8 of the pint glass empty. That is assuming that you pour the pint correctly, and you have the time to wait for the head to die (it takes ages). So you do get 500ml of Guinness in the can.

In other countries, afaik, it's illegal to pour a "pint" with a head and call it a pint. (Unless the glass is designed to accomodate pint + head, as Alun says).

Dont think he was doubting that. He is saying the pubs are leaving you 68ml short. But I never find that a 500ml can of guinness fills up a pint glass, unless you purposely make a huge bishops collar. My mate adds water the glass before adding the can to get a full pint, sinner!, I never drink cans of guinness anymore. Same guy used to make up pints with small guinness cans too, i.e. leave it open in the fridge, pour in a bit, then the 500ml can on top.

If you leave a pub guinness go flat it does not go down too much, the head becomes about 1/2 guinness, it doesnt just go away completely.

what I HATE is ignorant bar staff putting a head on bulmers, I once saw one actually pour some out of a brimming pint and put a head on it, I just stood there looking at it, took about 20seconds to get my money out, by which time the head was flat as a witches tit, then I asked him "are you going to fill that up?"

how sure are you that its the batch number? i thought of that but i keep seeing the same numbers over and over again, e.g. ive seen 160 dozens of times all over dublin but ive never seen 161. in total i think ive only seen about ten different numbers on the top and needless to say ive had a bit more than fifteen pints in my life

No, because in the US a fluid ounce is 29.573ml, while over here a fluid ounce is 28.413ml. so, 16 X 29.573 = ~ 473ml
