None of my mates are going out tonight. Do I just sit in and play Playstation, watch a DVD, or is there anywhere I can go. I went into Bruxelle's on my own once before (after a rugby game), but it feels bloody awkward.
So what do you do? I suppose I just gotta sit in!

Go somewhere non-mad! Chat to barmen/people and have a laugh. Bring other people into conversation at bar. Be invited to their table, etc.

It's ok to go out on your own abroad ... cause you fall under the cool, adventure, traveller column

Going out on your own at home leaves you open to the sad, no friends column or worst ... trawling the streets for a hooker catagory

maybe you should go out and speak with a foreign accent. Just make sure its somewhere will noone will recognise you

Last time I went out on my own (Bruxelles), I ended up being escorted off the premises by a Bouncer..I think I fell asleep...

I was a bit hammered. I ended up going to Flannery's after and having another few pints

Maybe sitting in isn't such a bad thing...

I've never done it, but it would occur to me that twould be easier to go out early - particularly if there's a game on. People are much more willing to chat to a random stranger at these times, and you won't feel so awkward, cos you can watch the game when no-one's talking to you.

Damn it anyway! I could do with getting drunk and going to a party to talk to strangers!! I wouldn't be as mean as to let you drive down here for the not that great nightlife that is Limerick!! And i just came back from Dublin today!!

I'm in London, a guy I know in work thinks it's odd that I actually have a fear of going into pubs alone.... Even if I am meeting someone. The thoughts of Sitting alone for 5, 10 whatever lenght freaks me out. He was trying to convince me to go out alone some night... he says I'd be suprised how many folk I meet... I feel like a twat standing/sitting in a bar alone.

Last time I went to Flannerys there was a smell of sewage in the place. It is awkward going into a pub on your own, unless you're a regular there where everybody knows your name, plan B get a few cans in and rent a DVD.

You gotta be in the mood to do it otherwise it is pure hell. But if you are on a hyper/bubbly/talkative kinda buzz then there's nothing better than going out and meeting new people ... it's kinda like boards only face to face and with beer

Hey Smuckers, you will be pleased to know I am sitting in watching episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I got Seasons 1, 2 and 3 in HMV on Friday. First series since Seinfeld and South Park to have me actually laugh out loud while watching!!

I agree! you only meet new people by taking the gamble..... I do this infrequently and every now and again meet some really cool people that I end up being good friends with.......

It helps to go to a place where people share the vibe - Bruxelles is one of those spots if thats the crowd you hang with. Never be afraid to chat to people, you go to pubs not to sit at a table on your own, but to meet new people.

Yeah, I wouldn't go to a pub alone much and if I did, I'd have a newspaper or a book with me rather than trying to get people to talk to me. Yet, in loads of tourist brochures, they go on about how it's normal to go to a pub in ireland and strike up a conversation with random people there. Where do they get this from? I've never seen it happen!

Happens a lot. But not if you've got a book generally. People see that as a sign you don't want to talk.
Generally (quieter) pubs with a more mature clientele as well.
