this forum should come with an addictiveness warning since many games that are going to be talked about are addictive as ****. if you ever walk past DnC at three in the morning you should know what i'm talking about. (damn legend of mir and DAOC)

its not just nerds that get affected by this, normal people, working people, can get messed up and their whole life can stop for a couple of weeks or even months when they start playing these type of games.

anyway, now that i've given the warning to anyone crazy enough to try these games, can i ask those who were addicted once to any massively multiplayer game on how they beat that addiction and stopped playing it altogether?

my solution is simple one. never pay for those games. no, i don’t steal accounts or anything. i simply beta test them. i've done about ten so far including anarchy online, earth and beyond, neocron and currently another few which you're not supposed to talk about because of the NDA (one is a massive space trading game). some are completely crap, mainly due to beta restrictions and other stuff but mainly because they are simple not that good. but there is always few that make you stay up until five in the morning and you have to be up at seven to go to college.

so, once the beta test is over and you have to pay for the game. i refuse to pay and that severs the addiction. next please. but recently there's been some good ones and I’m really really tempted to play more. what’s the best way to stop?

Move 25 miles from DnC.
Install Command&Conquer:Generals, without the patches.
Watch how the game eats your RAM(up to 1024megs of it, I've seen it happen, it's not a pretty sight).
Watch you PC die a bluescreen death
...and spend hours sifting through driver updates and display configuration, until YOU die the "bluescreen death".

Then you don't want to see your PC again, or at least be ignorant at the fact that it's the only thing that can burn those MP3's to CDA format.

i played sof2 for 7 months. and 5 of those months i played everyday i **** u not then i played CS for 2 months and i had to stop. i never went out. and on saturdays id find an excuse not to go th the pub with my m8's and then one day i said **** this addictive **** uninstalled all my games and got on with the more important things i recently downloaded enemy-territory so i play that now and again in healty dozes im never ever gonna go back being addictive.
its such a nasty thing to be addictive too i can see in about a year or so the problem gonna be worse on-line play is more mainstream now and ireland starting to catch on.

Long time no post in this thread ... so I'll bring it back from the dead
I used to play MUD's years back and got incredibly addicted, I worked -> played muds -> worked -> played muds etc etc for 12 or 18 months ... it was daft, I had so many lev 50 chars and a few gods, had designed some zones, had ALL the best kit and several pieces of unique items, twas fun ... I was saved by the game itself, it became so addictive to so many people that the game became unplayable due to overstressed server/not enough bandwidth ... I can still remember the address 8 years later, can still remember the phone bills as well :rolleyes:

Now I'm playing earth and beyond about 10 hours a week, but to get on in that game you need to spend a good amount of time at it ... dont think I'll resubscribe, even though the game is good

I've never played one of these MMORPG's before, but I know it's just the kind of thing that would suck me in... but I just think of this story, and I reckon I can muster the discipline....

There's a girl-friend of mine, a great person, and a real cutie (oi'd do her - hur hur hur!). She was going out with a guy about four or five years back. They had a place together. He was into Ultima Online in a pretty big way, and would generally come home from work and sit there playing it all evening.
He started a new job that paid really well, but he didn't stay long: as soon as he got the first paycheck, he just stopped going in. Didn't tell them anything - just didn't go in.
My friend gave up on him pretty soon after. She moved to dublin and didn't see him after that. Until recently. She met him and, over the course of their conversation, she discovered that he was STILL unemployed, and STILL playing UO.

Five Years...

I asked her how he was getting on in UO (not that it would have meant anything to me) and she said, yeah, great. He has a castle and all....

right now well I'll start off by telling you all that I'm a mudder and an addicted one at that....

I used to spend so much time on the mud that my char would age 3-4 days nearly every week. Only recently (in the past 2 months) have I been able to stop this, now don't get me wrong, I still play the game and I'm still addicted, but it nolonger consumes my every waking moment...I'm not quite sure how I managed this but I think it could be to do with the fact that I failed out of college because of it.

The only reason why I haven't given it up entirly is because of all of the friends that I know through the game...2 of which I'd say were really good mates who'd I'd trust with anything (one of whom I've never met in the flesh).

To me, its this sort of thing that makes these games so very very addictive. Its nothing to do with having the best kit (on the mud I play there is no best kit/weapons/guild) or having the highest skills (while it might be possible to attain, I know I'd have to spend months on the game, farming xp constantly to catch up with some players....and I like to talk to friends while hunting.

now I've yet to find the place inside myself that would let me delete my main char and leave entirly but I can definatly say that my addiction to this game has made me wise up and catch on to quite a few things that I was doing that were also addictions (which now leaves me enough time to work, mud, play other things, socialise and sleep

so yeah...for anyone who thinks that they are truly addicted, and I know its a cliche but, you have to be able to say to yourself that you are addicted and ask yourself what you're going to do about it, I'd recommend taking a read of http://www.olganon.com , but it is much more important to take your own route to breaking your addiction.

now as I said at the start - I'm still addicted to my olg but it nolonger consumes my life...and, TBH, when I came to the realisation that I was getting ****ed up because of the game, getting to the state I am now was always my goal.

oh and anyone who genuinly wants help / advice for getting themselves to the state of gameplay that they want is perfectly welcome to PM me or email me.

I'd like to take this time to bring this thread back to life in light of new MMORPGs hitting the scene. (especially WoW).

In about 20 years time, just like cigarettes they will come with a warning on the package. think of your friends, loved ones, jobs and other shorter more to the point games when you start playing an mmorpg.

Well i blame my brothers, We got broadband while it was still in testing ( 2000 ? ) so we went out to find a MMRPG other than legend of lag umm i mean mir. So my brothers brought home Daoc. I didnt' play straight away, the odd time i'd just watch them play, i had just started dating a lovely Finnish bird so i was being kept fairly busy. Long storty short , moved to finland with this girl, broke up , came back to ireland and though , why not give Daoc a shot. took over the 2nd account and started playing .. that was late october 2002 , it's now 2005 and i still play .. no where near as much as i used to but still when i do get home from work i'm usualy on within about 1 - 1.5 hours of coming home , and i won't log off till it's bed time.

I usualy won't stay of for crazy hours, only on selecet events which don't happen very often at all.

Been playing Star Wars Galaxies for 3 months now, its addictive but its also a lot of fun, so why give up?

apparently playing games of any kind releases dopamine into the brain, some people have an addiction to this and play games to ease their craving dopamine is also released into the brain by smoking hash, and i guess someone who plays a lot of games would have a high tolerance and therefore have to play more games in order to get the same amount of dopamine. not sure if this is exactly correct but you can search on it if you're interested. I think mmo's are more addictive because they add a social context to gaming that makes playing more fun, kinda like a giant chatroom where u can actually do other stuff aswell as just chatting, personally have only played two mmo's matrix online beta tested and played for ages after it was released had my own faction and stuff and made some good friends was almost a job playing that game, and am currently playing city of heroes, which rocks, except im on the US server, also beta tested ROSE online, and thought it sucked, nobody with a credit card is gonna want to waste money on such a childish game.

i've discovered its impossible to have a girlfriend and play an mmorpg, i broke up with one...started on wow(was big into rose previously but it wasnt great so i could peel away from it). broke up, bought wow(comfort thing), basically worked 7 hours, played 7 hours a day for 2 months over the summer, my friends all flipped, forced me to cancel my sub, all went well til recently, i'm currently patching the game, got a gf... i can see this being pasted in PI in a few weeks with
"how can i tell her i love her but wow is more important to me" at the bottom

Did the same thing beginning of October. Not only did I delete but disenchanted all my epix, sold all the shards and bought a pal an epic mount. Guess what ?? Two weeks ago, I raised a ticket and a GM restored the char for me....no gear,no money but my 60 priest is back in business.

Why did I do it ? Coz the long winter nights are too much for a soul to take....no. It is an irrational addiction to a group of pixels and a few fields in a record in a database. I need help but don't want it !!!

After months of playing any game I seem to reach my boredom threshold and quit it ,(gave away my 45 priest to a stranger on cs )CS has continually called me back due to the fact that its not lvl based and purely as a bit of social entertainment with my mates.
After 20 years of gaming I get more worried about the total immersive qualities in new mmorpg's -but again IRC /Chat rooms ?general internet useage is massively increasing so will the amount of addicts .I remember porn being the big bad devil on the net many years ago and (most) people got through that.
Society will always have a certain amount of "drop outs" and the net seems to be a better alternative to drinking oneself to oblivion which was the favoured route of the previous generation.

thats a really good point m8, my folks are always talking about me being on the net all the time. im not that bad tbh but i can see their point. if you consider what older folks did for recreation for years, pub pub pub pub pub pub pub pub most week nights i can hardly see the difference in my addiction. different times different trends. better video games

wow started in october, got to lvl 57 just before bc came out. stopedfor like 1 month started playing again last week.

I bought LOTRO, and had Guild Wars...and quit that quite easily and gave all my characters n stuff away

But i only dabble on mmorpgs as i have to split my time between them and FPS and RTS

A nice healthy balance of gaming :cool:

And join a gym

..that way you can say you keep fit and its ok to play

I work till 6, gym to 8, then game till 12 most days

and then party weekends...which i deem to be perfectly ok :cool:

You are so right man, It all started in DNC for me with Legend of Mir i did lans 6 days aweek for 2 year, I quit work well got kicked out lol, I would go to sleep all day then head in to DNC about 8PM and leave next morning around 10 AM,

I played LOM for best part of the night with some CS just to relax as MMOs get you Worked up when Noobs get you killed,

When DNC closed down i felt so bad cos i didnt have internet and couldnt play anymore, It was sad, My hole day was about LOM when i sleep i would be thinking about items i wanted to get in them game, How i could make my toon better, When i quit my head hurt, It was like losing a loved one, I couldnt go 5 mins without thinking about it, I am not joking, It took over my life, it took me about 6 months to get over it, Now i just remmber the good times, But then World of Warcraft came out in 2004, I beta tested the US one, And BANG!!!!!! I was hocked again, I played that game so much i nearly lost my wife and kids, THEY JUST TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE!!

Its sad when you relate things in Real life to the game, I spent so much money and time on WoW! I quit about 8 months ago when i went off the army, But i started to play it again last week, I know were i went wrong in the past so i can controll the FEEELING TO skip work and not sleep! just PLAY PLAY PLAY!

Was that game by any chance Eve Online? Just curious.

Eve is my online addiction but I have a couple of things I do not to get too hooked. Yet I still pay for 3 accounts every month :P

If I need a break I just do as little as possible in game, force myself into bordom, then i get fed up and quit for a while. I've "quit" Eve twice and come back. You can never leave forever $:\$

I never liked WoW because of the grind. That was easy to quit. But I saw the addiction in it and it almost got me.

Playing a FPS helps with MMO addiction, especially if you're in a fun clan (nothing too serious obviously). Just don't get addicted to the FPS too :P

Also try playing some sports!! (Never mind me I don't play any, hate the stuff

I started Space Cowboys before Xmas last year and all through Xmas I was at home from college so I would wake up, eat a bit of breakfast and sit down for hours on end to play, Mum said she was getting worried I was spending so long by myself in the room! Anyway I would play it pretty much all day, go meet the girlfriend/friends in the evening, then if I wasn't going out on the piss back home again to play up to 4 or 5 in the morning (this continued when I went back to college), then the sound on my laptop went for some reason and I couldn't fix it, I was e-mailing Dell and a guy even came to the house to replace the sound card which did nothing.

So I had to do a system restore which ment I lost everything on the computer, when I finally re-installed Space Cowboys I had just lost interest flying around the place killing hundreds of monsters for 0.05% experience. People in my clan (brigades in Space Cowboys) kept e-mailing me asking me where I was since I was a platoon leader and I just ignored them and eventually they stopped.

These games can be fun (missions etc.) but the addictive side is pretty dangerous and its not like going around killing hundreds if not thousands of monsters is fun anyway

I have a strange addiction that I think is relevant to this thread.

I can spend hours online reading about new games and getting excited about them (MMORPG's). But any time I've played one I've played for 1 hour max and got really bored and never ever played again lol.

I always consider getting the latest big release MMORPG but never do. Well actually last Christmas I bought one. Can't remember the name. The popular one with no monthly fee's?? Anyway It didn't work on my ****ty Intel graphics chip at the time and I returned it. So probably saved myself alot of time and weight.

The biggest gaming addictions I ever had were Dream Arena (Dreamcast) and Civilization on the PC. Dream Arena was like a kind of early MMORPG in a way.

I was really considering getting WoW for the first time soon since my new dell laptop arrives tomorrow. But after advice from an Xbox Live friend who's brother was addicted to it, and this thread I am definitely not buying it now.

Think I'll just stick to RTS and FPS.
