Listenable BBC R4 from Skraig is a new one.
Tell me more about the entries for "Radio Australia" on 96.8 and "Bang FM" 104.3. I'm guessing that the latter is a temporary licensed student station at MTU campus.
I have heard people remark in the past that Galway Bay FM's RDS of "G BAY FM" looks similar to G'DAY FM. I threw it in the middle of such a large bandscan hoping someone would figure it out….
Bang FM is the MTU student station, only been on air the last few years.
On high ground near Tralee BBC Radio Devon is surprisingly strong on 103.4. Also accompanied by the usual high power signals from Brest on 89.4, 93.0 and 97.8 (95.4 is blocked by 4FM from West Cork).
Closer to Cork on high ground looking south east there's additional French signals on 104.7, 105.9 (playing Bowie so I'm assuming that's RFM) and 106.6. Also strong Pirate FM on 102.8 and BBC Cornwall on 103.9 from Redruth (just below RDS level). BBC nats from NHT are at RDS level along with strong BBC nats from Redruth & Haverfordwest.
Strong Sporadic E opening in Kerry atm. If I was given a bet I would guess Finland
Fairly intense opening from Kerry to Belgium/West Germany/East France there in Kerry at the minute. Multiple stations at RDS levels
I had strong Sporadic E from around 4pm when I first noticed it up to about 10pm on Sunday here in Co. Donegal. The following are a few RDS names from Poland around 9pm:
I didn't pick up anything the few times I checked this evening.
87.6 - RTBF Classic 21 - Leglise/Vlessart (Belgium - 1107km) (10kW) 88.0 - SR 1 - Gottelborner Hohe (Germany - 1217km) (100kW) 88.0 - Nostalgie Belgie - Kortrijk (Belgium - 911km) (8kW) 88.1 - Nostalgie Belgie - Brugge (Belgium - 895km) (1kW) 88.6 - BNR Nieuwsradio - Mierlo (Netherlands - 1054km) (26kW) 88.8 - SWR Kultur - Heidelberg/Konigsthul (Germany - 1330km) (100k) 89.0 - 89.0 RTL - Brocken (Germany - 1387km) (60kW) 89.0 - DR P1 - Sonder Hojrup (Denmark - 1363km) (60kW) (AF with 94.8) 89.3 - RMF FM - Koszalin (Poland - 1765km) (60kW) 89.4 - Radio Oost - Hengelo (Netherlands - 1120km) (10kW) 89.8 - MDR Jump - Chemnitz/Geyer (Germany - 1570km) (100kW) 90.4 - Klara - Egem (Belgium - 903km) (50kW) 94.8 - DR P1 - Naestved/Overup (Denmark - 1447km) (100kW)
First time I've seen 2 Sporadic E signals AFing. 89.0 and 94.8 were both at RDS levels.
fair play! It’s flat as a pancake to me in South Dublin rn
Big DAB opening tonight. Receiving over 200 stations on the Roberts PlayDuo with telescopic antenna in West Cork. Receiving the Metropolitain 1 and Brest-Etendu muxes from France as well as a lot of UK ones. I can receive Heart from the Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Somerset and National multiplexers
Also a good Tropo lift on FM. As well as some Czech, Spanish, German and Polish stations. The BBC nationals were being received with RDS from the North Hessary Tor, Redbridge, Haverfordwest, Redruth and Wenvoe. I also received some low powered transmitters, I think from the Devon and Cornwall areas. This was with an FM yagi
Another good day on DAB with a dedicated antenna. Picked up the BBC National (12B), SDL National (11A), D1 National (11D), Cornwall (11B), Devon (10C) and Plymouth (12D) multiplex’s from the U.K. as well as the Metropolitain 1 (9B) Metropolitain 2 (8C), Brest Etendu (9A), Brest Local (7C) and Morlaix Locale 1 (9D) from France. Got 212 stations on one scan!
Looks like the opposite is happening also, reports on DigitalSpy of RedFM from Nowen Hill being received inland in Devon.
It is still going. 240 stations on the latest scan. Somerset coming in now also as well as rennes and Quimper 8A. Was getting the Brest-Etendu and Metropoltain 1 muxes in the car earlier as well as the BBC National one. Lots of Spanish stations on FM
Cork is closer to Plymouth than it is to Belfast.
You are quite right. Belfast is 400km away while Plymouth is 390. Rennes is 650km from me though. Realistically I won’t get Belfast as there is a hill to my north while I have a sea-path to the south-east. Everything bar Rennes and Quimper still there this morning on DAB.
Plymouth (12D) DAB multiplex is transmitted from North Hessary Tor at 3.2kW which would explain the reception along the South Coast.
Indeed as @WHL points out it's all about the sea path, which makes SW UK and Brittany signals very receivable along the Cork coast. For FM also, finding a location where local signals are weaker helps massively.
Re: Belfast. I was receiving Divis and Brougher Mountain signals in Co. Kerry in recent weeks. The main challenge for Belfast in the south of the country is that spots where Divis might come in will have a clear view to the north which will also pull in any other strong signal coming from the rest of the country. The other challenge for Divis is finding somewhere that it can come in alongside the high powered Mullaghanish signals 0.1MHz away. BBC R4 on 96.0 is the easiest to receive for that reason
I'm getting the BBC nationals on FM in the car from North Hessary and I'm in north Cork about 35 miles from the coast ! No DAB, but I have gotten DAB from there in the past
Getting those today too in Waterford. Also Classic FM on 100.0 FM. Greatest Hits Radio was there too for a while but I didn't get the frequency.
