This week will be warm or very warm with the potential for some hot weather on Thursday 25th June.
Early in the week on Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will range typically from low to mid 20s. The warmest conditions on Monday will be towards the west and southwest due to an easterly breeze whilst Tuesday the warmest conditions will be transferred to the east. There will be more cloud on Monday and Tuesday towards the northwest with some drizzle. Hazy sunshine developing both days across the country. A thundery shower cannot be ruled out for the southeast on Monday.
The highest temperatures will return to the west and southwest again on Wednesday as the easterly breeze returns and will rise further here to the higher 20s possible in good spells of sunshine.
Strong signal for the 20C isotherm at 850hPa to make a very rare visit to Ireland on Thursday increasing the temperature into the 30s for the midlands, northwest and west. Even some parts of the inland east could see 30C being achieved. Compared to past occasions that achieved 30C, this will be accompanied by exceptionally high dew point and wet bulb temperatures making it feel oppressive and very stiff. The heat and humidity may spark off some thundery showers - details to be firmed up on closer to the time. It will become much cooler from Friday with the Atlantic flow returning.
This is unlikely to meet heatwave status which is defined by Met Éireann as an Irish station having 5 consecutive days of a maximum temperature above 25C. Nonetheless, it will be a very warm period.
Just for fun, let's predict the highest maximum temperature you think will be achieved this week (most probable on Thursday) and at what Irish station (can be any of the 25 synoptic stations, the climate stations on WOW will not be considered though will be discussed when watching out for the live temperatures on the day).
