Gardaí are investigating how a submachine gun fell out of the boot of an official vehicle driven by specialist armed response gardaí in Dublin city centre.

A member of the public helped ensure it was returned rather than stolen from the scene.

The Irish Times has learned the Garda gun was lost from the vehicle in April on the north quays in Dublin city centre, though news of the incident had not emerged before now.

The Garda firearm – a Heckler & Koch MP7 submachine gun – was in the boot of the vehicle, which somehow opened at the time.

Something to keep in mind when we as licence holders are looked at as being less competent than AGS regarding firearms.

I thought when not in use Firearms were locked in a secure box in the vehicle not just chucked in the boot?

Edit> I was thinking of the UK Firearms unit so probably no comparison.

QUITE a long list of incidents with firearms in the last 2 decades that would have stripped any of us "mere civillians" from firearms ownership.

But in fairness to them too, a couple of these incidents, one unfortunatly fatal, is down to shoddy issued personel equipment and proably non existant weapons retention training and by the sound of this a known problem that has not been corrected on the Garda vechicles.

I’d bring it home and try and license it , and when they ask where you got it tell them they don’t want to pull at that tread and just license it without anymore questions for their best interest 😂😂😂😂
