They were listing off the Portugese midfield there in one of the podcasts I was watching. It is sickening looking at the talent of it. To the extent they have to bench some class talent.

In an era when so many players retire from international football in their early 30s or younger, 'to concentrate on their club career', we should at least appreciate how astonishing it is that someone is doing this at CR7s age.

I tend to agree it's probably a tournament too far, but bloody hell he is rewriting the accepted limitations on footballers longevity.

i must say i am thorughlyexcited for the world cup kickking off tonight, i love an americas world cup and was looking forward to this for past 5 years. can tget the hate for it i think it will be way better than in russia and qatar. i love the way it will feel and good look like usa 94 with matches at middday, vast majority of matches will be played start to finish in daylight in the sun. awful pity those pesky indoor stadiums will make it look like germany v curacao is on at night even though its 12 midday kick off in dallas.

I was listening to Talksport and they listed off a load of examples of players who should have received longer bans but didn't because FIFA/UEFA decided to use their discretionary power. John Terry was the one I can remember, he apparently had the 3rd game of a 3 match ban deferred by UEFA just through their discretion. I'm not going back through youtube history to try and find the clip.

But its everybody hates Ronaldo day I guess.

The reason there were so many day games in 1994 was because soccer didn't have the support to be put on prime time TV (7pm to 10pm or so).

Now it has more support (still behind the other 4 sports) so it can make it on prime time schedules a bit more.

I was at the tournament in 1994 and a few times in pubs that couldnt even find channels to show games. certainly wasnt a priority by any stretch of the imagination.

Always been old footballers playing into their 40s. Modric is also at the World Cup. I wouldn’t say either are rewriting anything although obviously it’s quite the achievement to be a professional athlete in their 40s

France were known as a flakey team back then weren't they? Should have won more from 84-98 given the quality of player they had at their disposal.

The soccer journalists were on about France v Senegal as another potential shock. I remember that 02 game I was predicting a Senegal win that 02 side were distracted and were not a patch on the focus of the 98 side.

I doubt it will happen in this years match up, this current French side don't seem to have a care in the world.
