It's understandable that you wouldn't go to any bother for 1 deposit of 15 cent.
However one brief email outlining the details and copied to retailer, Galway Hooker, Local Authority and Re-turn could possibly stop this illegal behaviour in it's tracks.

I have reduced some climate change as I had a few cans from road side pick ups that I cut off end with a scissors and reshaped them round and machine accepted them today.
It’s a victory for climate change and knowing I’ve recycling responsibly.
You can also cut out the barcode and sellotape it over the barcode on an out of scope can. Some out of scope do not even have a barcode. You will probably find them lying around. Put the remains of the can in your green bin or in a can bin at a bottle bank. Double win for the environment.

Cleaner beaches is pretty good news by any metric.
Its a pr puff piece, so to call it news is laughable. If it was from coastwatch directly I would take it seriously but this is just pr paid for by unclaimed deposits.

There's not a shred of evidence that anything has actually been sent for recycling. Like, look at this from the re-turn site.

You'd think they'd be mentioning their strategic partnership with whoever is supposed to be doing the recycling. That's what I'd be shouting about if I was the CEO.

It is not news for a ceo to wax lyrically about their own company druing an interview. A newspaper or radio reporting on an organisation independently is news.

I did im not sure what makes it different from any other radio interview so what is the point?. That you call the claims of the ceo, news, makes you sound naive.
It's just a straightforward interview with the presenter asking the questions, some of which came from listeners.
The claims of cleaner beaches and towns originated from Coastwatch and IBAL.
The claims in the interview came from the CEO. He states it, not the interviewer. He claims coastwatch told him this.That you call these claims great news, really makes it seem like you believe fully anything he would say.
They aren't claims.
They are published by separate organisations based on surveys.

This is not news. Since the scheme has started litter has reduced, this was known before the interview on newstalk as has people losing money deposits, and scavenging for bottles in bins. Both the negatives and positives of the scheme are still the same as before the interview so to call it great news like the CEO has suddenly opened your eyes to something new is a bit bizarre.
Like the poster saying the Return Awards was great news. Companies dont need to spend money on PR for some people to be impressed.

I am all for cleaner beaches. I miss the way we used to recycle as it was much easier.
Easier for some, but less effective on the whole though...
Like any CEO of a company I judge him on his results.
The old way was never going to get us to reach EU targets.

Recycling used to be about doing the best you could for the environment now replaced with this scheme, all stick, no carrot. I hope they make the best use of these lost deposits.

Who is "we"? The creators of Re-Turn, the EU for legislating collection targets instead of recycling targets, producers lobbying to be let off with continued plastic usage or is it Paddy trying to get a deposit back that's getting the blame?

The reality is the exact opposite of your carrot here. So leaving a better world is Ireland having an expensive COLLECTION system that exports all plastic having no idea what happens to it?

It's sometimes testing to keep things civil when posters are all for facts and figures when it supports Re-Turn.
When the facts / stats are against Re-Turn it all gets very vague and aspirational for the future of the scheme / world.
However I suppose that's slightly better than some who dump unrelated links here without even reading them.
