Yep — this weather is nothing unusual. And certainly not the worst start to summer that we've seen in recent years.
I read somewhere that the end of May can often actually be slightly warmer than the start of June in Ireland and the UK.
Not sure if it's true. Perhaps Syran has some stats on it…
Banna Beach a few hours ago, as dismal as it looks, my face was red after a walk from sand blast………and my fingers freezing. Deserted. What a difference a week makes in Ireland.
Its crazy just a heavy deluge every 45 mins or so that lasts 15 minutes. Going to be late for a 6pm appointment because I'm stuck sheltering and it's pummelling down in Dublin city centre.
3rd night in a row now with the heating on. Apart from the blip last week, autumn continues.
Haven't had my heating on since mid April even then hadn't it on much in the weeks prior to mid April. Can never get my head around people putting heating on this time of yr.
2015 is one of the absolute worst relatively recent summers I remember in the West of Ireland, it was cool, it was wet, it was windy. There was no good weather in it and much as I like a beach day even when it’s not settled, it was miserable in 2015. 2026 is already better than it thanks to the 4 hot days last week at the end of May (not meteorological summer I know). But I would be worried with the Super El Niño on our summer prospects now, 2015 was also similar re El Niño I think?
Most irish homes are poorly constructed and have alot of issues with dampness and draughts, even after being insulated, particularly older homes, that along with our atrocious summer conditions force people to run central heating well into the summer.
so its a combination of our historical cultural acceptance of low standards for living conditions and an atrocious climate.
Well i live in a badly insulated house which doesnt help. Its miserable here. North wind again. I suppose when it has been so warm and when the temps drop to more normal levels, the body feels colder. Mine does anyway,
Im hoping June turns out like May. Poor start but a great finish. Few more summer like days we had a few days back would be fantastic

Is it not the case though that much of western Europe is having this bad weather also with below average temperatures?
I see met eireann are saying the following in regards to the mini May heatwave
"Met Éireann has since confirmed that this new 30.6°C temperature record at Shannon was exceeded at seven of its other high-quality climate stations on the same day, where temperatures ranged from 30.7°C to 30.9°C"
So will 30.9 eventually be ratified as the new May record?
That's some temperature for a day with a week still left before summer officially started.
Shower after shower today and they’re still going here in the east. What an atrocious ‘summers’ day.

I think the truth lies somewhere in between and I wouldn't say most Irish homes as per your first line. Nor would I accept that the Irish nowadays have a tolerance for low standards for living conditions, though I do agree re atrocious summer conditions.A lot of Irish people nowadays live in huge houses, the likes of which you don't necessarily see in other advanced countries.And insulation standards have improved hugely in Ireland. My own house, built in 2007,though quite small, is timber framed, well insulated, has a few south facing windows and is overall, a very warm house. That said and poster @Billcarson will have a stroke, lol, I would always turn on a shot of heating on a cold summer's night.The damp and cool temps in Ireland make it miserable after dark on a summer's night imo, even in a well insulated house. But you are indeed right that a lot of older homes are not at the same standard. Each to his own re whether to heat or not in summer I guess.
I know I’ll be sticking the gas fire on tomorrow night when I’m home for the weekend, hospital is at a steady 22c so it’s nice but back him will be a different story

A day of rainbows out in Dublin Bay. Making the most out of this horrible windy showery weather.
Well I had a lovely afternoon knitting in the garden anyway. There was quite a bit of sun and even when it was cloudy, it was warm, especially sitting in a sheltered spot. I had to keep a big umbrella beside me, which I put up for several very short and not too heavy showers. It worked well instead of popping in and out of the house every 10 minutes! It's lovely to catch every bit of sun possible (when it's not too hot) for the vitamin D.

I tend to put the heating on when I'm cold. Not what month it is.

Dry and bright so far in north Longford. A slight westerly breeze, feeling cold at 10c.
Well I dont be cold enough to turn on the heating on at this time of yr. If I feel a bit chilly at all I just put on heavier jumper. simple.
