Same Lads buying all the time. It's possible to breed them yourself. Alot of the results come from feeding and management.
I don't mean to be putting down monamore of course. The best cows in the country. And lisduff in my opinion. It's a fast pass to improving your own herd. I just think, for me, I'll stick with trying to improve away my own through breeding my own for now at least. The first Ai man came here on a bike and that wasnt today or yesterday. There is alot of lies and BS at some sales. Considering classifying mine some time soon and entering the local herds competitions. EBI is gone to sh1t altogether.
iv been buying Radney heifers last few years from odetas mostly ,they have records coming out there ears ,generations of very good milk combined with excellent % ..it rakes a long time to get heifers and milking stock on ground breeding from your own ,.just think it’s nice to bring in good genetics to compliment them ,feeding and management is imporfant but of breeding isn’t there the important link is missing
Your right. Im not a stock judge, far from it but i thought there was still a few narrow chested stock there that made handsome money. Now dont get me wrong there was outstanding stock with very good solids there aswell. The highest prices are a cow lovers cow. Not commercial stock. If that's what you're into iv no problem with that at all. I got permission from the dept to buy a couple, I bid on a couple but I was only annoying myself! Was talking to a farmer i know, he bought 3 calves as he said to support Tom. He was laughing saying he'll never see that money again but he loves his cows and didnt mind.
My and the chief were in a man's yard buying cows years ago. Arguing over price, farmer said you know this is one of the best herds in the country, the chief just said sure Ringo wasn't the best drummer in the beatles!
Fully agree with you. Best of luck to a fella if he wants to pay €10,000 for a cow but it’s a funny way to try get rich. If a cow cost that money I’d give her a bedroom in my house
That cow was for showing embryos bull sales u need not worry whoever bought that cow new what they were doing.I seen a cow at 6600 a red cow would win any show didnt seem dear to me if your into that.
Grass Quality is really sh1t this year. Between poaching, cold, stress, seed heads, I won't be hitting 4% protein anytime soon I'm afraid.
I'm too lazy/busy for topping or taking out bales at 2 or 3 bales per acre.
I have been looking at catalogs from AI companies for 40 years. By now the milk lorry man should be piking the milk out of the tank with the height of solids.
Im not the best with grass, really struggled to get a couple of nice covers in a row into cows the last few weeks. There'll be a 4 in my protein but it will be the wrong side of the decimel point!
finding opposite up to now …growth has been back and never really forgot far ahead or out of control …all my cow paddocks have seen a mower either topped or baled since end April ..to me that key for grass quality in June ….,don’t get the lads pulling the piss out of the neighbour baling paddocks at 2/3/4 bales per acre ….whilst they are grazing paddocks gone far too strong and then having to top off load of grass ….whilst there litres fall off and protein goes thru the floor
Managing grass isn’t as easy as some think but you have to take action once you see grazing covers getting too strong and rotation length getting too long
When oh was in hospital last year tom Kelly's cattle were along the road on the journey in and out, something to take my mind off things. Sad to see none there now
I barely got the fertiliser out on my silage ground by the end of April. Was still grazing the first rotation. Dry ground, low rainfall, higher stocking rate and buffer feeding makes managing grass easier.
I'm not taking the piss out of any neighbour. I just busy/lazy for mowing or topping. Can't take out high ground here for bales so you end up trying to graze theough them and then the ones you want to grow can just stall at 3 or 4 weeks and start to regress. It's all easy on paper or in the Golden Vale.
It's a bit of a scam at this stage. Progress seems very slow even though management has generally improved beyond recognition. The fertility figure in EBI is a joke and can move a top bull way down the list or a mediocre bull to the top of the list.
The health figure can be high but be negative for SCC and lameness.
Used a good bit of DP bulls this year.

no offence …but u can do lots of you put your mind to it …used to be a poster here kev the gaff…farms other side of nenagh to me ,was up his way looking at a bull yesterday …his farm is on side of a mountain and he looked to be doing some job of it …another farmer milking well north of 200 cows on the hill as its known locally ,manages grass as well as anyone on flat land ,makes bales ,spreads slurry ,fertiliser etc grazes early/late …I’d say you’d plant it 😂😂…as I said managing grass isn’t easy ,no matter what sort land you farm ,if your not prepared to put in the effort /don’t want to it’s even harder
Must be heart breaking for him now to be looking at an empty yard and fields ,….hos retirement fund and family will be well sorted tho ….bit still …whatever he and his family do next best of luck to them

you don’t get it …lads like Tom put a lifetime of work into that farm and cows ,he had huge passion for what he did which was testament to his herd of cows and farm he built up ….the prices the herd achieved show the quality of ainmal he has bred over his farming career
Dont know nothing about the man. I hope he getting out of cows with his own free will. Not because of health or family.
It's a smart man/woman who knows when to retire. I might write a book sometime on fellas who could not stop and it ultimately ends in disaster.
Old lads getting killed off tractors, quads cattle. The fences get poorer and poorer till the cattle spend longer in the neighbours than their own fields. Sheds falling in.
I knew a lad once and the COOP were telling him to retire, he didn't pass tests on years. But instead of fixing the problem he would keep the lorry driver talking and get the wife to switch samples in the lorry.
Another rang me one day wondering would it be OK to let take the board bia lad to walk around my yard instead of his own.
And at the end of the day, Cows are cows, one bad TB test and they are gone, if you died this morning, they would be milked again this evening
Grass has just come right here but was feeding silage up to a week ago or so. In this purple patch having the place skinned has worked out grand.silage changed dramatically in a week ,cut the zero grazed and grazed stuff Wednesday on it was gone heavy and a bit of stem but there was nothing in it a week before that.
Unreal, changed literally overnight when the heat came. Alot of stem and seed though.
Out of interest, where are ye getting your milking detergent. I was going to get a barrel and a barrel of deosan teat foam.
