they are the highest in Europe according to eurostat that is correct
And that’s for 2025 before the current war!
Anyways Koreans got it to 7 years now from first pour
you dispute eurostat figures now?
Are you some sort of expert now Ted?
Do you reckon it only cost EDF that, ?
If the French government via EDF want to subsidise an irish nuclear power station , i'm all for it , 2 reactors , maybe 3 , even the strike price for Hinkly C would be great now ..
, as near to dublin as possible biggest demand, least chance of doing any noticeable damage if it ends up glowing , probably have to be on a large river , but maybe just on the coast,
Why is the price so high - it could have a lot to do with supply and demand ,
And it didn't help that for a good few years , there was no effective recourse if a company got a licence and contract from eirgrid to build x mw of power generation, and then just held back and didnt build ,leaving the grid high and dry
"In November 2014, KHNP signed an agreement with Ulchin County to build Shin Hanul 3 and 4."
2014 to 2033 is only 19 years. And it would take years to get sign off here.
Did you read the article? A contributor cites our dispersed one off housing as factor. And does not correct for discount pricing model or purchasing power (standard of living) per country.
Different continent. Different regulations. 60 hour work week is standard. Plant configuration not allowed in Europe. Recent history of corruption and staff that worked on Barakah being sent to prison.
Your stupidity in getting tiresome at this stage.
Speculation that is not in eurostat figures nor explains how we went from cheapest to most expensive (while remaining one of the dirtiest)
You see RTE are a propaganda channel by this stage having to put a spin on things with George
Because it’s getting awful embarrassing for the government
Cheapest in Europe when we had the lowest wages in Europe. We were the most malnutritioned population in Europe.
Burning filthy black oil and turf, yeah savage crack. Aren't you lately asking other posters here if they care about CO2? Dirtiest is relative. You equate CO2 dashboard to dirtiest. Engage your brain for once and compare then and now in the round.
How many children die of asthma in winter now compared to the 70s and 80s. I still miss my friend who dropped dead during a freezing fog filled with the airborne detritus that comes with "cheap" electricity.
My best friend survived 3 near death asthma episodes. He may have forgotten but I cherish every moment I spend with him, his wife and kids. Kids who exist because the deadly fog of cheap electricity was phased out when he was at a vulnerable developing age.
Can you please stop being a complete scrote and give people a break. Good posters, many are engineers and scientists who are fed up of your childish and incorrect claims.
I presume for context you could not find the bar chart that showed those years as well as when OL 3 came on line in 2023, but the good news is I found it for you. Your welcome, and no need to thank me. Happy to help.
What your problem with French exports are I have no idea other than comprehension. You have been shown the context multiple times now and are still rambling about it.
French nuclear in 2025, as it did for the previous 15 years, bar one when it was 120TWL, supplied renewable companies with 100 TWh of electricity for 4,2 cents per kWh - for context our present price is 40.42 cents - under the ARENH mechanism to keep them in business. In 2025 France exported 103.6 TWh of electricity which garnered them €5 Billion +. The idea that 103.6 TWh of electricity export was from renewables generation is bonkers. It was nuclear. A 5 year old could do the maths on that.
What is this cheap storage that is the latest shiny hope ?
Battery storage to supply the grid at present, based on the ESB capital cost for their 0.3 GW of battery storage, for just a single day before going flat with no way of recharging would cost €60 Billion. Pumped storage is a negative sum, one off shot game with no way to recharge either. Green hydrogen on a number of levels - not the least of them being economics - is the how long is a piece of string conundrum - and for ammonia that you were rattling on about some time ago, it`s how long is a longer piece of string where you have to produce hydrogen first.
Since 2022 when you were trying to regal us with certainty that the cost of offshore was going to dramatically fall and that French nuclear generation would fall to a low 40% range, I have a file at the back of an old filing cabinet that very rarely gets opened nowadays where I dump all guesstimates and crystal ball gazing predictions.
If it was treble the price it would still be miles ahead of what we would get from 37GW of offshore wind.
They are building them in clusters of two each on three sites and as far as I can see are going to repeat what the did originally. All the same size and design where they complete on before moving on to the next where the time required reduces for each following one from the experience gain from the previous.
I never got where this idea that nuclear plants are built in the middle of nowhere. The principle is the same as it always was for large thermal plants. As close as possible to where the demand is with less need for transmission lines. The only difference for nuclear being a reliable water source nearby. There is one near Paris that is less than a 100kms from Notre Dame which is right in the heart of a city with over 7 million of a population and there is one 30 kms from the center of Cape Town South Africa.
Do you mean electricity charges or the cost to upgrade the grid ?
Two closed down ones in Germany are adjacent to Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Heilbronn. If the plant uses a river for cooling you can be sure that it is near a population centre.
The one outside Paris is situated on a bank of the Seine as far as I remember
If you were arguing for it on the basis of it being treble the price, your position would be more defensible.
It's the constant pretending by yourself and @bored65 that we can somehow do it cheaper, and faster than the British and French, makes your argument not that credible.
My opinion has been, and still is, that we could do it a lot cheaper than the cost of this 37 GW offshore/hydrogen mishmash when compared on a real like for like basis.
But then you would not know anything about that as you do not know what that 37GW plan would cost or what it is you favor. If you do for either then you are very quite about it, point blank refusing to answer anytime you are asked.
Still, your shirt tail is showing when you admit that even at three times the price, nuclear is more creditable.
Every year Wind in Finland has produced more electricity than OL-3. Every year. It's reducing imports more than OL-3 by producing more than twice as much electricity.
Last year Wind in Finland produced 22.071 TWh vs.
"Production at Olkiluoto 3 ( OL3) totalled 10.38 TWh last year. There were no unplanned interruptions and the availability factor of the plant unit was 82.6 %, the highest in the three-year operational history of the plant unit."
82.6% is NOT the capacity factor. It's the uptime. It translates as 63 days without power. 9 weeks !
We have had a dispersed one off housing issue since the foundation of the state so thats BS for a start
No it isn't. It is basic fact and why rural standing charge is higher 🙄
Read above comment on the state of the country when we had cheap electricity.
Oh look the wind and solar we are told provides most our energy suddenly got 10% more expensive on top of Europes most expensive electricity to begin with
Whatever it was doing until OL3 came on line it wasn`t reducing imports. If there was any conclusion to be taken from that chart it`s how intermittent and unreliable wind is.
It wasn`t doing anything to reduce the cost of their electricity either. In 2022, prior to OL3 they were paying €164/MWh.In 2023 it was €57/MWh and is now €41/MWh.
In contrast we currently have over 5 GW of installed wind which is practically our current demand and we are paying €404/MWH. 10X that of Finland.
once again you lack the capability to read a Post. Slow down and think before you post.
I said you don’t need to be a specialist. The old lady down at the bust shop can tell you that we are the dearest.
lucky we have wind and solar or that 8% would be much higher
note again that you can’t read an article correctly, it’s not 10%
Wind and solar would not have made the slightest difference. Gas determines the price.
over in nuclear France prices decreased in 2026 so far
https://particuliers.engie.fr/en/blog/electricity/electricity-price-february.html
half the price of here to begin with
that’s what’s these lads are unwilling to admit that due to wind and solar being so unreliable the price gets set by those provide backup by burning gas and releasing co2
And they call themselves “green” while in reality all they accomplish is line pockets of gas turbine manufacturers and gas exporters (as gas extraction in Ireland is basically banned now) via one failure point with UK
Gas would set prices with nuclear also? The amount of nuclear required to make it otherwise would take an extraordinary long time as you would likely need double the amount of supply required in Nuclear.
and yet in nuclear France that 20x cleaner than us prices went down this year not up 10% like us
Same France that will phase out fossil fuels completely by 2050
https://globalcarbonfund.com/carbon-news/france-roadmap-to-end-fossil-fuels-by-2050-climate-strategy-targets-and-emissions-outlook-explained/
While “Green” Germany whom spent 4x France on Energiewende and second most expensive in Europe behind Ireland just signed 2030 to 2050 LNG contract with Canada because like us they will be burning gas in perpetuity to backup unreliable wind and solar
https://www.sefe.eu/en/media/newsroom/press-releases/press-release-detail_2688.html
France built nuclear in a he 60s when it was cheap
gas determines the price , but different gas plants have different prices. So the cheper more efficient CCGT plants set the price and the expensive gas plants don’t get a look in.
But you clearly don’t know that.
In reality the peaker plants set the price for the time they operate. The CCGY plants set it for the remainder.
Ah Jaysus - spare us the "wind power is cheap" BS🙄 Care to explain too why the wind industry is strongly resisting changing the system where the most expensive energy source on any given day is setting the price of power in Ireland??
