Finally someone is calloing out the return scam.

Never thought I'd agree with Peadar.
Tóibín had also questioned the amount of money accumulated by Re-turn, the private company that operates the DRS, claiming that €103 million in unredeemed deposits was “resting in its account”.
and
Tóibín said the DRS deposit was “like a tax” on consumers, except it doesn’t go towards paying for hospitals, education, housing and other public services.“Instead, it goes to a company and to CEO salaries that they refuse to publish,” he said.

Reminds me of the M50 toll bridge. In incredibly stupid idea. Maybe I'm just getting old.
My time is more valuable than 15c.
Presumably you would return more than just one can or small bottle?
Also it goes in the recycling bin anyway so I'm "doing my part"
It is completely your choice to not seek a refund. So why would you complain abut the scheme?
The notion that a small country like Ireland should prostrate itself on the altar of Green ideology to save the planet when we live in a world with active warzones, developing nations using coal plants and other emissions-heavy industries, and nations like the US and Russia who do whatever they fancy is just idiotic anyway.
Yeah, let's not bother our holes doing anything because other people are tossers? Sure isn't Ireland green and clean anyhow? 🙄
I'll confess I'm a little guilty of just using the recycling tbh. I don't tend to buy canned goods. Plastic bottles, I might have one a month. So letting the bottles build up would be a wait. 🤣 I have no inherent objection to the scheme though.
But presumably you (and the others above) allow glass bottles & jars to build up.
Anyhow, I think weve strayed off the Aontu scaremongering nonsense
You must have a lot of time on your hands.
Cans and bottles go in the recycling bin,you know the one we pay about 400e a year for?
Im not a wealthy person but the 15 cents makes no material difference to my life.
Life is way too short for bolloxology like this scam.
Have a glass bin so they tend to build up in that.
But that's what I don't get (and I'm not directing this at you). Many opponents of the scheme claim that they don't want "smelly" containers piling up at home before they need to return them and collect their deposit. However, they have no issue doing the exact same for glass (but for no deposit).
Oh I legit see nothing wrong with the scheme. If I had any decent volume of use, I'd definitely be using it. Plus it's pretty easy to rinse containers out.
So not only are you paying a tax that is easily avoidable, but you are also paying nearly twice the norm for your recycling bin.
It's no wonder you're not wealthy.
So you don't think a quarter of a million euro a year is too bad? Lots of other more important things that money could be spent on.
I'm like you. I very rarely do soft drinks or bottled water and 99% of my alcohol is glass bottles so I can take what is probably a 15c a month hit and happy to do so because I support the scheme.
Lidl (and probably others) allow you to put it on your loyalty card. Handy if you are too embarrassed or nonplussed to go cash in your 15c at the counter.
What are you on about?
How do you know what part of the country i live in and how much the refuse collection companies charge here.
Im not wealthy as mentioned but ill take the hit on the 15cents and itll have zero impact on my life.
In my world this DRS nonsense doesnt exist. The most time or thought ive ever put into it was 3 posts on boards today.
The producers of bottles and cans have to pay a producer fee, this is what pays to run the system.
Plastic bottle litter is bad enough (DRS is reducing it) but if we banned plastic, broken glass all over the place would be a lot worse
You can easily get a can through the machine every 2 seconds. That's €4.50 a minute. Anyone who says it's not worth their time, what is it you're doing for a living that pays more than €270 (after tax) per hour?
Thats a really disingenuous post.
You are forgetting (or deliberately omitting) the time and effort to wash, rinse and store this rubbish.
Also the sticky unpleasantness of using the machine (im guessing here as ive never done and wont be doing it)
A can every 2 seconds seems a lot quicker than any of the peoole ive briefly observed at the machines .What about rejected cans? What does that do to your figures?
Plus how long would it take the average person to accumulate 1800 cans/bottles? If you’re not using cans/bottles that you’ve purchased yourself, there is the time needed to collect the bottles.
A lot of people, myself included, can't be arsed storing & transporting rubbish for the sake of 15 or 25c.
This is one of the most idiotic posts I've seen on boards in a long time
So you admit you don't know what you're talking about 😉
There is no need to touch the machine at all while using it.
You don't need to wash or rinse bottles or cans. I never have. Just empty them. You see people rocking up with plastic bags with god knows what swilling around the bag. Totally unneccessary. It's not as if Coke is cheap enough to waste these days, never mind beer…
Effort to store? Jaysus 🙄 I put them into a cardboard box, that's not effort, it's actually less effort than squashing them and putting them into the green bin would be.
If you don't get them damaged they rarely get rejected (sometimes they do have to be put through twice)
So it won't be €270 (after tax) per hour but it won't be less than almost anyone earns at work, either, so this talk of it "not being worth their time" is complete rubbish
There's absolutely nothing ridiculous about it.
I'll tell you what is ridiculous though, throwing money away over a childish strop
Nobody in their right mind is accumulating 1800 cans or bottles and then spending an hour putting them through a machine, and I never said they were.
But throwing away a typical payout of €8 or €10 for the sake of a couple of minutes' effort is just thick.
Hey,best of luck it.You seem to enjoy it and thats your choice.
Im choosing not to participate which is also my perogative.
No need to get so triggered by others opinions when it doesnt effect you in the slightest.
Anyway,im off for bbq now, will probably be about 40 cans between the whole crew by about 10pm.Hope the recycling bin doesnt get too full.
The deposit is too low. There isn't enough incentive for people to return them properly rather than throwing them away for others to scavenge.
"Also the sticky unpleasantness of using the machine (im guessing here as ive never done and wont be doing it)"
machine
There is no sticky unpleasantness
The only part of the DRS machine that you touch is the button which produces the receipt.
"Yeah, let's not bother our holes doing anything because other people are tossers? Sure isn't Ireland green and clean anyhow?"
Well in fairness, if we do achieve net zero at some stage, and those who pollute on a global scale don't change their ways, a lot of people aren't gonna be impressed if Ireland still gets battered by weather events caused by climate change regardless.
Do you think we shouldn't do anything then because others might not do the right thing?
Just merge it into the other thread, it's all been discussed before and both sides disagree etc.
Did I say that? All I'm doing is airing the possibility that we may achieve our climate goals locally, but that others may not, or don't want to. You simply can't ignore the scenario happening.
I'd vote for that too.
Yes. 5c to the government to spend on whatever is better than forcing everyone to trek down to the shop with empty bottles to put in a machine to benefit Mr Ciaran Foley (https://re-turn.ie/about-us/) as he calls himself.
No one is forcing you to do anything.
I've answered that already. Time will tell, just like the smoking ban and the plastic bag… people will adjust.
