What media reported it? Listened to RTE most of the day and have been on teitter, didn't hear or see any mainstream media report it. Genuine question
Opening headline on Virgin Media
You can go stop them all coming in so.
Meanwhile the rest of us will just continue on with life not worrying ourselves into an early grave about people who aren't Irish, because of morons like John Walters a man who had a kid with Sinead O Connor.
Yeh, I see now several did pick up on it. Thanks.
been on all day. And headline story tonight RTE
In some regards, I'm glad that he said what he said and that it was published for everyone to see. Don't get me wrong - despite the nonsense that some anti-immigration posters are trying to tell us, Ahern was 100% in the wrong. However, now a new generation will have a reason to remember what a vile scumbag Ahern is!
Now maybe he will feck off back to his cupboard and we'll never hear or see him again!
I'm devious because I judge my neighbours on merit.
Ah. Okay. 😕
It has escalated big time this morning. Morning Ireland have covered it several times since 7am.
Yes, because RTE is an echo chamber.
Journalists are cosy with the political class. It's big news in their world.
Most people agree with him.
RTE this morning, claire byrne is going to cover it later. I think the media don't see that lots agree with aspects of what he said in terms of numbers, we can't take everyone in, its just not possible, systems are bursting at the seams, it'll sink us all.
I think the issue is quickly becoming one of speaking with a forked tongue or being twofaced. Saying something in public while privately believing otherwise etc.
My opinion is that what he said is what loads of politicians are thinking, but can't say. It seems to be a case of how strong Wokism is. We all know it just can't go on and on indefinitely. Youre branded either racist or right wing to say it. His biggest mistake was mentioning Muslims and the Congo, that is racism. Bertie is just trying to stay relevant and was trying to swing a vote preference and got caught out in that. Publicly he would never utter anything like it even though he probably does think it.
FF very quick to distance themselves from Bertie's comments. But how far removed actually are they from this? They're effectively cutting the imagination accommodation scheme in the next few months. Are FF/FG just having a swing to the right?
That's the favour Bertie has done them. A sticky one they'll not like having to field questions on in the last days before an election.
I don't know if he actually believes this or if it's just a case of yet another sad old man trying to be relevant. Probably both.
Out of curiosity, why do you call him a "vile scumbag?" He was a bit before my time.
People from the Congo aren't your or our neighbours!
You are advocating that we just let them in and see how it goes….you're advocating this insincerely I think.
It was your hypothetical that they were.
🤷♀️
I'm not advocating for anything.
Hopefully….Jesus.
I never implied they were my or our neighbours. They're not.
And you are advocating for opening the door, let them in, and see how we get on……and feck these crime statistics related to their country.
He may well have done them a favour. Full deniability of the remarks, yet with a nod and a wink to later preferences from those who are anti-immigration.
His behaviour from time to time showed his true colours and yesterday's video just confirms it. He made the comment that his people complaining about the economy overheating should kill themselves. (He eventually disclosed how hard it was on his father when his uncle killed himself and how he understood the suffering following suicide!!!)
I don't want to place myself or the site in a libellous position but my views are based on beliefs such as blatant corruption, the inability to tell the truth, treatment of people including Gráinne Carruth. Plus, his & FF's populist policies led the country towards an economic cliff edge.
Thanks for that. I read a comment yesterday that he never minded brown envelopes on another site.
My interest in politics started in 2014 in the UK. I've read two of Pat Leahy's books and he didn't go into that much detail about allegations against Ahern. It does feel like the Tiger period was a waste though. Tax cuts and keeping up with the Joneses instead of serious investment and planning for the future like the Norwegians did with their oil revenue.
“Are FF/FG just having a swing to the right?”
Besides the fact that subsidising 1000s of refugees is unsustainable long term, they HAVE to swing a little more towards the “right” in order to quell a further rise in far right support. They’re elected by “the people”- and a significant and vocal section of that “people” are calling for greater control of our borders , who we let in, and what they do when they get here.
They don’t necessarily WANT to do this - but they HAVE to do it.
I actually have some respect for Bertie on this occasion - he’s called it the way many think it but don’t dare say it.
I welcome immigrants - but I don’t want ghettos and I don’t want criminality - I want to see integration because that’s the only way to prevent serious social issues in years to come. And we have to be honest and realistic as to what we can achieve. Saying yes to every economic migrant might sound noble today, but it’s a fcking nightmare tomorrow . We have to be honest on our abilities as a country and recognise when enough is enough
In your hypothetical there were.
Anyone who would look at these type Congo statistics and say "I have no issue at all with people from the Congo coming here and living beside me"
My late father was involved in planning. He would have had politicians of all hues contacting him over the years (for good and bad reasons) - we were all rehearsed in saying how "dad wasn't home and wouldn't be back until late". He never was a part of the corruption and never wanted to be despite the economic climate during the likes of the '80s. Dad was quite familiar with the various bribes being passed around - Ireland is a small country and when you have a small number of people taking money for planning related decisions, everyone in that game knew - it wasn't really top secret!
I think that is called 'dogwhistling'.
How did FF let that crook back into their party anyway? Stupid move.
You're tyin yourself up in knots here….you want to allow an open door and let them in and see how it goes. I think this is wrong, and insincere. There's not much more to it, really. In relation to what Bertie actually said, he was right and correct for a great amount of people here in Ireland!
You're tyin yourself up in knots
Again, it was your hypothetical.
you want to allow an open door and let them in and see how it goes
Yes, yes anyone that doesn't subscribe to blanket bigotry wants to open the door and let everyone in.
Beyond boring at this stage.
Bertie has nothing to apologize for on his recent comments in my opinion. On his time in power? That's a whole different story.
