Family in Doonbeg have always maintained that Doonbeg was one of the proposed sites for a new airport back in the 1930s, because of the large flat area. Ultimately Shannon won because of the existing set up in the area with Foynes.

Every bog in the West of Ireland probably had the same yarn.
The viewing area accessed by the lifts near JJ Ruddles are permanently closed. One source would say that the Airport Authority don’t have too many people that even like aviation so they don’t bother. The APO’s would tell you access to the area is restricted to keep protestors out. Access is only via the lifts so a quick turn of a key gives access.
It was October 2003 when we spent a whole day there. We were flying to NYC to family and arrived at Shannon to find out Aer Lingus were on strike. Think our flight was due to leave early afternoon and we didn’t get out till midnight on a chartered Air Transit flight.
Using shannon again in a few weeks.

Looks like the third weekly CDG flight might be a victim of the fuel price crisis - now showing as ‘sold out’ for any date you try to book. Fortunately the other two weekly rotations are still bookable…

There is mention of the CDG:SNN EI trimming in this article.
"Dublin based services see automatic re-accommodation to same or adjacent day flights while Shannon to Charles de Gaulle passengers will be moved to Dublin services."
It seems that Lufthansa are trimming back too.
We were to fly FRA:SNN:FRA on their summer Thursday schedule but they canceled them and offered us the Saturday flights instead.

after pre clearance there is a small cafe counter and a shop selling souvenirs and duty free. Best to eat at the really good zest cafe before pre clearance.
Zest is a local brand, and not one of these generic airport restaurants that serve poor quality snacks at exorbitant prices.

That’s exactly what you get at the Sheridan Bar and Zest post security. Seriously overpriced with desperate standards. Most of the airport staff avoid/boycott them but don’t take my word, see Google reviews, TripAdvisor. They were good. Zest had some great locations and reputation.
zest normally is a great restaurant. Not in the airport though, in my experience
Ive had great sandwhiches from Zest at the airport. I was comparing it to the generic rubbish you get all over the world.
Nothing beat the quality of the main restaurant before it was franchised out to hms host.
Zest is too slow when its any bit busy.
As is the Sheridan bar and security. The airport goes on about being quick and easy however it's busy more often than not now and they seem unprepared for the predictable crowd flows.
Agree with you. It's quick and easy at certain times. But not able to deal efficiently with a crowd.
It needs a pub thats separate to the restaurant.
As in a place that just serves pints and drinks at a somewhat normal price without food and coffee etc. all being bundled in.
It's a bit of a cod anyway that you can buy a few bulmers or wine etc. in the duty free at a reasonable price but get fleeced next door in the restaurant.
A proper oul man style pub and a golf shop selling polos and merch from all the famous courses around the area would print money. They're leaving money on the table in a big way which surprises me a lot given who runs the show.
Post CBP needs a good bit of work too from the concessions POV.

That’s a shame. Loads seem reasonable from what I’ve heard. Not BOS, but I flew in on the DL JFK-SNN service last week which was basically full. Usually fly EI but needed the v late connection timing (23.45 departure) which the additional BOS rotations also pretty much facilitate.

I heard it was more that the 139 out of DUB had a poor load factor. The 139 is the outbound leg of this W route. So SNN will loose out due to poor loads out of DUB it seems. I heard the EI JFK route was soft this year. BOS is strong by all accounts. LHR has very high load factor.
The TATL routes from Shannon seem to be performing quite well, looking at the business fares (and the fact it's sold out some days) would make one think yield is quite good. Hopefully in line with IAG's expectations.
The evening SNN LHR is struggling owing to its late arrival time - plenty of availability using avios.
