Seeing as we have threads for the 90's,00's and 10's let's see how an 80's one goes?
Reaching No.6 here and No.5 in the UK in 1989
Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon
Aplhaville
Big in Japan, number 8 UK 1984
Frankie.. Two Tribes
entered the UK Singles Chart at number one on 10 June 1984, where it stayed for nine consecutive weeks
Wow!
It does get played a bit on online new wave radio stations but not on regular stations.
Here is another forgotten 80s radio hit from Visage: Mind of a Toy.
I remember seeing the video on MTUSA, but they never showed it on Top of the Pops. Frankie Goes to Hollywood made a number of appearances in the studio, possibly a few were repeated. On one occasion, the musicians in the band swapped around the instruments they were pretending to play!
And waved guns around during another appearance, much to the dismay of Michael Hurll the then producer.
Speaking of TOTP, this is one of the best studio performances from 1982, personally I don't hear it too often on the radio these days.....
Was a massive Adam Ant fan as a kid.
My old flatmate in London was quite pally with him in the late 90s.
That tune still sounds fresh today.
Saw her mentioned on Professor of Rock's Youtube the other day. Was surprised to see she actually cracked the states. Reaching No.5 here and 8 in the UK.
Samantha Fox - Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now
Had a great sound but never seemed to get further than 2 hits...…
Loverboy from Billy Ocean towards the end of 1984. Mixed reception in Europe. The video is on the eccentric side for a dance grooved song, but a fine track nonetheless.
And here is a Loverboy of a different kind...
His only No.1 here or the UK mainly due to being a double A-side with Wet Wet Wet's cover of With A Little Help From My Friends.
Billy Bragg - She's Leaving Home
Another band with a great sound that I would pay good money to see today...…
He is serving time for manslaughter, with another 12 years to go.
Different Kidd Creole. That's the rapper from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
They were a lot bigger in the UK than the US, KC even married a Sheffield girl.
Ultravox's The Thin Wall (81) with the synth solo played on an ARP Odyssey by the legendary Billy Currie.
Their biggest chart hit hitting No.4 here and No.3 in the UK in January 86. I'll always remember it from this Rock Around the Dock concert that my brother had tapped off TV.
The Damned - Eloise
1981
1985
Two great songs from Godley and Creme: Under Your Thumb and Cry. The video for the latter also demonstrated their talent as video directors.
If You're looking for a really boring autobiography to read, lead singer Wayne Hussey's second book is the one for you!
Wayne Hussey of The Mission?
Yep
Had a bit of extra life in Top Gear at one stage but this should be heard more often. One of the better extended mixes of the time. Duell by Propaganda
https://youtu.be/NTM_apWWcO0?si=Cv7wmfVOx3AMaFW3 (How do you get it to function as a hyperlink?)
Great song and great extended mix. Both versions were a "radio hit" on 1980s alternative leaning Capitol Radio. It is one of those songs that pops up these days on online new wave stations but not the regular stations. Incidentally, Propaganda has got a bit of airplay on John's Connolly ABC to XTC on RTE Gold.
To get the hyperlink to work, simply hit return after the link! You were one keystroke away!
And one more, from 1988 the lesser known but excellent original single version of Adam at the Window by Jimmy McCarthy himself. A regular play on Capitol Radio at the time.
I had heard Mary Black's version many times on the radio, but don't recall this original version. I am surprised because I listened to Capitol Radio quite a lot in 1988, and also because it was the kind of song you were more likely to hear a few years previously on that station. All that said, I like this version and already I prefer it to the much more familiar Mary Black version.
Woops.... wrong band.
