Seeing as we have threads for the 90's,00's and 10's let's see how an 80's one goes?
Reaching No.6 here and No.5 in the UK in 1989
Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon
I definitely remember that but was it from the radio or was I just going to the "wrong" clubs!
great tune. The missing link between hi-NRG and house! And it did get some airplay too
Another Radio 2 (Comin' Atcha) special......
London Boys
London Nights
Their biggest commercial success, reaching
No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1989.
Erasure
Sometimes" peaked at number one in South Africa, reached number two in the United Kingdom and West Germany, and became an international hit.
Great guitar.
a tragic story behind the band too
indeed, very sad
The duo were killed when their car was hit by a drunk driver in the Eastern Alps, Austria, on 21 January 1996.
Not exactly forgotten.
one of my favourite 1980s bands
Modern Talking
This one reached number 2 in Ireland and 4 in the UK in 1986
Brother Louie.
Reminds me of DJ Steve Walsh. Was in a car accident in Ibiza where he was filming his next video and died after surgery. Reached No.8 here and 9 in the UK.
Steve Walsh - I Found Lovin
and Falco, 1998 his Mitsubishi Pajero collided with a bus on the road linking the towns of Villa Montellano and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
Colin Vearncombe died in Cork following an car accident in 2016. Better known as Black everyone knows Wonderful Life but he also reached No.8 here with this
Black - Sweetest Smile
a personal favourite of steve wright - he played this regularly on his BBC Radio 2 shows right up until the time of his passing 2 years ago.
Reaching No.11 here and 8 in the UK in 1982. Fun fact Ros Holness is the daughter of Blockbusters host Bob whilst Anita has appeared in One Foot in The Grave and The Bill.
Toto Coelo - I Eat Cannibals
Had the 7" single.
Pity the radio stations playing 80s runes don't feature more obscure hits that her than banging out Toto's Africa every other day.
I agree FM stations that we have in ireland don't play obscure 80s, though thousands of Irish and international on-line stations do.
InInfinitely better than their bigger hit.....
Always struck me as a reluctant pop star and, again, a better song than the bigger hit Kiss Me......
Always get that confused with Mari Wilson.
Mari Wilson - Just What I Always Wanted
Formed a supergroup called Me Me Me with Alex James from Blur and Justin Welch from Elastica and wrote with the Barenaked Ladies and Robbie Williams.
King
Love and Pride,
No2 in uk charts 1984
Do you know all those all clear ads for travel insurance,
where the couple are going abroad, the lady is Denise Gyngell who was in Tight Fit (sorry for the video) 👀
Ah yes - Latin Quarter. Radio Africa (the first song) was their big hit. That and the second song (No Rope as Long as Time) were played quite a bit on Dublin's alternative-oriented pirate Capitol Radio. The latter you could say was a "radio hit" for Capitol Radio listeners as was this gem from Latin Quarter. New Millionaires:
The Housemartins had a number of hits during the 1980s. but most of them are no longer played. The Caravan of Love gets an airing every year around Christmas time (even though it wasn't really a Christmas song!) and their first Top 40 hit Happy Hour gets the odd play. The following two deserved to be played after they were in the charts.
2. Build - this was their last single to reach the UK Top 30 (Number 15). It reached Number 9 in Ireland. This is noteworthy for their then fairly new drummer Dave Hemmingway on lead vocals on the chorus. This was significant as the main lead vocalist Paul Heaton and Dave Hemmingway were to go on to be joint lead vocalists of The Beautiful South. The original drummer Hugh Whittaker is shown on this compilation cover by the way! (He did play on the first song!)
The Five Get Over Excited video was Dave kidnapping Hugh and replacing him.
Paul and Dave went on to The Beautiful South, Norman became Fat Boy Slim, Stan wrote kids book and has a very good narrowboating Youtube channel and Hugh spent 6 years in prison for attacking his business partner with an axe!
didn’t realise that their farewell single “always something there to remind me” didn’t go top 30 in the UK! It did get quite a lot of airplay. ‘me and the farmer’ was a student disco favourite of the time too!
Speaking of bands that split and members forming a new band, The Tourists had two hits in Dec 79 and Feb 80. The band split and their singer and guitarist formed one of the biggest bands of the 80's, The Eurythmics.
The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You
The Tourists - So Good to Be Back Home Again
Fronted by Galway-born Paul King.
Also recorded with Nick Rhodes as The Devils.
an absolute banger of a song
Steve Strange and Visage - Fade To Grey
Number 8 in the UK 1980
