OK but they are being generally positive and constructive unlike the other guy so I would actually take on board some of what he says and listen.
Kreamer is just being so unbelievably negative about the whole thing without being constructive in anyway so clearly does not want this to succeed.
We have a house in Ardkeen and split our time between Dublin and Waterford - just not quite as close as her parents are to the airport so we aren't able to see it from our own kitchen window. We've been members of the Waterford Chamber for well over a decade, and we made plenty of use of the Luton and Birmingham services back in the day - only once used the Southend service though. But sure - no interest in the South-East whatsoever.
Rational, credible business plans are what will make a success of the airport - not wishcasting from fantasists and fanboys who do nothing other than continually damage the credibility of the people who are actually doing things to try to improve the region.
My point still stands..
it is far easier to knock something than it is to have something positive to say and most of the negative commentary comes from people not from the region
… so apologies if I included you in this cohort as you must know how underfunded and undersupported from govt the region is ..
I don't see the relevance in Waterford is closer to London than cork, shannon or knock.
The fact is people from those areas are not going to chose Waterford over what is closer to them.
Airlines also won't decide, let's place a plane in Waterford a pull out of any of the airports mentioned.
Airlines will fly from where the demand is and where they can make profit, they'll offset the fuel costs onto the passenger, not even sure why people are having this argument.
Heck of we went down that road we could be arguing that Waterford is closer to London than. JFK New York.
Any idea when the sod turning ceremony will be? Interesting to see if Butler and Cummins will make an appearance!
Why do you even have to ask that question... you know they'll be there.
Fuel is a crucial operating cost for airlines and other transport businesses. A spike in fuel prices can make a barely viable flight or route non-viable especially if enough seats are not sold. What you just saw with Lufthansa was a decision based on rising fuel costs and the commercial viability of routes. At its most basic, there is a relationship between the distance an aircraft travels and the fuel it uses. For freight services in a situation with rising fuel costs, distance would matter as well.
Dublin and Cork get passengers from the South East region. With passenger services, Waterford would take some of that business away from Dublin and Cork hence the pushback from those airports and their pushback from their supporters on this thread.
With Waterford taking some of those passengers from Dublin and Cork and a high fuel price situation, some Dublin and Cork flights would, theoretically, have fewer seats sold. For airlines, it does come down to money. After all, they are businesses.
Sod turning planned for 18th May
Would you ever stop digging a hole for yourself with the fuel thing? Ireland is a fairly small island, the cost differences between flying to one part of it or to another are extremely small, especially when divided between almost 200 passengers. It's not an important factor in determining whether flights from a particular Irish airport are viable or not.
Sod turning…stop digging a hole…Freudian slip?
Whatever about Cork, the notion that Dublin would even notice any loss of traffic to Waterford is laughable. I hope it does well but what's the realistic maximum within the next few years - a handful of flights a day?
That would be nice.
a handful of flights a day
Assume a low cost carrier with 1 route initially
Assume 180 seats per leg with on average 150 filled.
150*2 = 300 Px per day.
And open 360 days 300*360= 108000
Not to be sniffed at.
It's not, but the notion that it would "reduce pressure on DUB" etc. is nonsense
Back to the bit that matters, the current hold up is apparently caused by waiting for the IAA to grant a licence for the relocated Helipad, (no surprise there that a Gov body is slow) as soon as this is granted the runway can be closed and the heavy muck shifting can start.
Just thought the thread could do with some facts rather than useless conjecture!
That is embarressing... wow…🫣
"Outsiders" cannot have opinion on a waterford airport , but youd expect those 'outsiders' to come support 'your' airport ???
...
Lad, maybe take a breath ..... you are getting a bit hysterical ....
And what exactly did you add to this topic may I add..absolutely 100%nada just a moan
😘
I rather contribute zero , than make a 100% show ...
Carry on , its funny.… ' outsiders' .... 😃
Yawn
I come here occasionally to see if there is any further updates on progress at the airport, i see 10 new posts and think to myself there must be something happening, then come in here and alas, no, just the same old sh*te. The simple fact is the investment is there, this is happening. Lets just see how it pans out because no one has a crystal ball and no one here knows what negotiations are happening, if any, to secure commercial flights once the runway is complete.
To be fair, there is something ironically humourous about someone attacking posters as outsiders in a thread about - of all things - an airport!
You're obviously going to encounter all sorts of people on a message board like boards, but the poster "Bards" does seem to be a particularly unnecessarily aggressive sort. I feel a bit sorry for him if he's capable of being wound up to this extent about a local airport.
Everyone o here knows what was meant…mischievous people not from this area grinding an axe for one reason or anther. Pathetic trollery really.
Anyway: from a local pol.
No doubt our local reps will be there for the photo opportunity
You were completely against the runway extension, yet you clearly support Knock airport and all the government supports that go with that. We are only asking for what every other region in the country has. I wish Knock all the best something you could not do for Waterford. This is why you got called out! Hypocritical.
"Of all things - an airport" says the fella who can't see the irony in this statement, the same fella who gets wound up when whenever there is a bit of positivity on the airport's future, who swoops into to piss all over that positivity and to put us down here back in our box, to know how place and not be getting notions!
It's not airport versus airport he said to me recently when I called out just how similar his own beloved Knock situation was when the sod was turned. Raised eyebrows, people saying it was madness, and they were right for about the first 20 years, 1 flight a day, heavily subsidised by the taxpayer!! He won't admit it was a failure for 20 years and was lucky the plug was'nt pulled on it! And he will argue the geographical area is totally different, and he is right, it is. The South East population is bigger and have more alternative options available, but that doesn't mean the airport here won't find a successful market, maybe it too will have to limp along from a passenger point with a handful of flights for a few years, but as time passes and the population of the region continues to grow it will become more and viable, just like Knock! And as I've said before here passenger flights are not the primary focus of the investors.
He's is right, the irony is humourous, but it is on him! For Cosmo, airport v airport is exactly the crux of his issue, whereas we hold no grudge against Knock and many posters have wished it well, Cosmo treats airports like football teams and he desperetly does'nt want Waterford moving up to the same league as his airport! It's sad I know, and he will refute it and laugh it off but lets call a spade a spade, that is exactly why he comes on to this tread continously no matter how he tries to dress it up!
Very good summary of where we are up to from the Munster Express and shows how local people put their money where their mouth was, and gave up those shares for the betterment of the region
https://www.munster-express.ie/new-era-for-airport/
For the naysayers, work progresses quitely...
fake news, ai ta fcuk!
Sorry, but that post contains nothing other than parochial nonsense from start to finish. As soon as people start banging on about Knock on here, then I know straight away that they're not posting in good faith. I've said on many occasions that Knock and Waterford are completely different cases, obviously aren't in competition with each other for passengers and that Knock is irrelevant to the discussions on this thread. It's telling that it's others posters that keep bringing Knock up whenever I post, a real small time attitude if there ever was one. Sad to see and perhaps indicative of some wider issues in the region that seem to crop up again and again.
The Munster Express article is interesting. It's especially interesting that all those small shareholders have given up their shares to a billionaire for free, with no guarantee of ongoing funding of commercial services included in the deal. Clearly the billionaire has been given everything that he wants, it has all been handed to him on a plate.
The local shareholders, on the other hand, are just left to wait and hope that they've done the right thing. If he builds the runway and just uses it as an airfield for private jets without any commercial services to the general public, they have absolutely no clawback. If a few services run for a short time period and fail again, they have no clawback. An incredible situation really.
