Family Wedding in Tuscany Sept 2027

A family member is getting married in Tuscany later next year, they will be renting out one of these 10+ room private villas that will host the full wedding also. They have booked it for 7 days, Sat to Sat, wedding will be on the Thursday. I am thinking that I would like to incorporate the wedding into our actual summer holidays next year.

So here's what I am thinking, we will fly into Pisa on the Tuesday before the Wedding and stay in Tuscany until the Saturday, but after that travel onwards to some other part of Italy for a weeks holiday. Im guessing I'll need to hire a car from Pisa airport and drive to Tuscany, after that, Ive no idea what to do when we leave Tuscany.

We always said we'd love to go to the Almafi Coast, but have been advised against driving around that area as its notoriously dangerous in cars apparently, so for that reason, I am not keen on keeping the car beyond the Tuscany leg of the holiday, Sorrento also looks a good option too, but again, I am open to suggestions.

Has anyone else done anything similar to what I am thinking?

I have a few times but have gone more north. Pisa, Lucca (beautiful), down to Chianti (Gods country), Florence, home from Bologna.

From Bologna you can day trip by train to Modena (25 mins), Reggio Emilia (40 mins), Parma (50 mins).

Theres a load of towns in Tuscany worth seeing. Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra…. could name a dozen more.

It's a long way from Tuscany to Sorrento, and you're right, I have driven around Tuscany with no problem but I wouldn't around the Amalfi coast, mainly because you are competing on narrow roads with gigantic buses and suicidal moped drivers.

As above, Florence, Siena, Lucca, San Gimignano are all gorgeous and easily accessible by car.

If you've never been to Florence, get to Place Michelangelo (early if possible, parking is free but it gets crowded) for your first view of the city.

I would echo the above advice. There's loads to see in Tuscany. It's a big region. Watch out when entering Florence and other big cities as there is the limited traffic zone. You'll get fined for driving in there without a permit. Best advice is to park and ride in the cities I would think. Also, make sure you pay your parking and all that. They seem to be strict on all those things probably because Italians are crazy on the roads.

I've done this before, I'd hire a car and drive to the wedding, get the car ferry to Elba Island afterwards spend your holiday there, maybe arrive in Pisa on the Thursday and give yourself more time for the holiday on the other side. We rented a little mini cooper convertible perfect size for the roads. It's not really an English holiday destination so you'll see most menus in Italian etc, pack a snorkel, if you enjoy beaches you won't get to see them all, beautiful Island to explore.

in fairness, if you know your pasta dishes then its the same as any italian restaurant, pizzas sometimes have a name, sometimes have just ingredients listed but if you know ham is proscutto and mushroom fungi, and salami isnt really a thing except for spicy pizza "Diavola" - you'll not starve
