Surprised to hear how many parkland courses are qualifying already.
My club in Co Armagh we are still being forced to use mats everywhere. It's still incredibly soft in places and every ball landing even on the fairway is still picking up mud.
I wouldn't say we are a particularly wet course either. Qualifying generally would start in the last week of April although i can't see it being as early as that this year.
is this a package trip or something you put together yourself? Do you mind me asking roughly how much it will cost? Sounds like a wonderful trip to be honest! Enjoy.

We put it together ourselves. Its for a mates 50th. To be honest I am not exactly sure about the cost but I reckon its about 1000GBP for the 7 rounds. Accomodation in St Andrews isnt cheap either but really wanted to stay there.
I have a question for those who have done this type of thing before.
We dont have the Old Course and have paid for all the other rounds.
Would you enter the ballot anyway risking losing cash paid on other courses? Was thinking of doing it on all days except for Carnoustie and then calling the course due on that particular day (if successful) to try and change tee time or maybe get 9 holes in even there.
Obviously would only look to get Old Course once.
I wouldn't bother Rondo. You have a fine list of courses that are all enjoyable in their own right. You have your itinerary now so I would stick with that. I have played the Old Course a few times but they were all when we had the tee time booked through the long term ballot. One time we went and tried getting on the Old through the daily ballot and didn't succeed but we actually got out on Carnoustie instead luckily enough. But that was more of an ad hoc trip that we had only planned at short notice. We had no marquee course booked and were hoping for the best with the ballot. We were lucky to get out in Carnoustie. But if I had one marquee course booked (which you have) then I wouldn't sacrifice any of the other rounds for the slim chance of getting out on the Old.
Cheers Miley…. We wouldnt be sacrificing anything for a chance of Old Course as Ballot is announced 2 days in advance. I appreciate the advice though.
What are people’s thoughts on solo golf. I’ve a day off next week and I was thinking of playing on my own, never done so before.
Do you end up losing a lot of balls?
I’m also worried I would feel a bit weird out there on my own or possibly just wouldn’t enjoy it.
What i meant was that you could lose one of the rounds that you have paid for and that would be a shame because they are all very good courses in their own right.
I play loads of golf on my own. Especially in summer, I'll often play from 6.30 am onwards if it suits or I'm off for the day. I find it very peaceful that time of the morning, plus you're finished nice and early for the day if there's anything else on.
As for losing golf balls, it'll pretty much the same as any round. If playing poorly it doesn't really matter if it's just myself or not
Speak for yourself…some of us play 2 balls when on our own and lose double the amount as usual
I’m similar but find early mornings can be tough on balls if playing straight into sun on driver holes. You hit a good one but have no idea where it actually went. It’s my favourite time to play and generally I play it straight up, one ball only, as actual playing golf practise not as swing practise.
Looking for advice on where people buy trophies for societies etc. Want to get a relatively cheap trophy that could be engraved year on year for a small golf outing. Appreciate any recommendations. Thanks

I think it's one of golf's true joys tbh. If you're reasonably happy in your own company (I am mostly) and you enjoy nature & walking (I do), playing golf on a nice sunny morning or evening particularly can be a total joy!!
I also seem to find my 'zen golf state' far easier on a sunny summers or autumn evening, just playing maybe 2 balls off against each other in a pseudo matchplay competition… it's great for your golf too- enjoy!!
P.s. I always seem to win this matchplay 'competition ' also, which is far more than I can say for when I've a card in my hand & have to put up with other opinionated, middle aged, former greats also earnestly trying to find their golfing magic!?
I am recovering from illness and have taken to playing 9, then 13 holes on my lonesome both to get match fit and working on various aspects of my game.
Trying for 18 at weekend to see can I survive them.
Have to say it is enjoyable but cant beat the craic with usual buddies.
Most importantly I have big motivation in trying to take fivers off the captain of Boards GS as he has thrown down the gauntlet.

Does anybody have advice regarding golf lessons/schools in the Algarve? I’m heading over there next week for a fortnight and would like maybe seven days of lessons on all aspects of my game. I’m a 15 handicap so wouldn’t be looking for anything too elite - just things like getting the divot in the right place etc. Maybe there’s a good place to look? I’m finding the stuff online a bit useless. Not enough in the way of candid reviews.
Don't know anything about lessons in the Algarve but 7 days of lessons in 2 weeks is an awful lot, whatever country you get them in. I'd say get 4 max and try to get practice on what you learn.
