Thought it might be a good idea to start this,

Are you doing anything reduce diesel usage?

I'm trying to reduce road mileage by planning jobs differently.

Not sure how to reduce the field time for tractors, maybe put a smaller tractor on for spreading if that's possible.

I've noticed a lot less cars on the road last week,

There needs to be an effective protest. The pricing trajectory is only pointing one way.

I'll stand to corrected but I don't see anyone planning on bringing a USA flag. I don't ask my Doctor or Dentist their opinion on Donald before seeing them. It's irrelevant.

My auld lad was out on Saturday trying to get the old Bamford mower going for the first time in 12 years or so. Says it'll be much cheaper on diesel to use that to cut the silage with the Leyland than use the bigger tractor and 8ft mower. He's not wrong either.

We have to wake up that imported diesel from Saudi, Iran, Russia, America is not the solution. We have the ability in this country to power the whole of Europe with renewable cheap energy. Our government needs to wake up. Short term apeasement is not the solution. Protest in favour of windfarms and wind energy and nuclear. Make Ireland the leader not the user of other countries money and energy. We should have learnt a lesson here. We are reliant on fuel imports. Change that.

We had the greens in control of the EU, but they have made deals with S.Amer, China, India behind our backs.

I have always been of the opinion that oil is technically more suited to transport than electricity but that we shouldn't use fossil fuels for electricity generation or maybe home heating too

Electric power would be superb for heavy load applications like road haulage and agricultural activities, except that the technicalities of getting the power to the motors isn't up to it yet.
Maximum torque from zero revs, much quieter, zero emissions at the point of use, are all big positive attributes.
Diesel electric trains haul thousands of tonnes, as their sheer size makes it practical to have the power generation actually on the vehicle.
Luas trams appear to be in the 30-50 tonne range, so very similar to artic trucks, but they're restricted to wherever the overhead power lines can be installed.
When, and it IS 'when', battery technology reaches the point where a day's work worth of power can be stored on the vehicle, electric trucks and tractors will become commonplace. In my opinion! 🙂

Did I hear New Holland have developed a hydrogen engine that they are very impressed with. While handling hydrogen gas could be an issue i assume it would be cheaper to run.

Don't think New Holland have but JCB are well down the hydrogen road and have the engines in some of their equipment already. Though whether its commercially available or not I don't know. As always with this, the bottleneck is the infrastructure to get the hydrogen in the first place easily and cheaply like ya can with diesel. New Holland are on the methane power unit road for sure

oh I didn’t say forever, but for a considerable time diesel will power agriculture.

I’m all for renewables where them make sense. We have solar in and looking to extend with more panels and battery to be more or less cost neutral by the end of the summer.

imagine if someone said 50 years ago in the future all your post will be carried electrically .. I.e its not that we will be doing the same thing but with electric power, its that the nature of what you are doing changes so much that smaller electric powered robots is what does the work….

You see soime of this already.. solar powered robotic weeders in horticulturee… Electric farm loaders,

what about gas powered tractors from biofuel.. …

This crisis recognizes how important motive energy is, …its better not be dependent one one source of it.

Edison motors in Canada are doing interesting work in retrofitting diesel electric hybrid systems into lorrys and 4x4's too.

Deboss Garage on YouTube has some good videos on the setups.

Diesel will be necessary for many though for many years to come there's just no getting around that.

Lots of traction these days on manufacturing black diesel and other alternatives such as veg oil blends suitable for older mechanical injected yokes. Granted black diesel is illegal in Ireland but tbf no one is going dipping auld tractors.

Could be a resurgence in old yokes doing work this summer if that ape in the whitehouse keeps flailing about like a toddler.

avoid any large purchases of diesel this week. There's been a fairly large drop on the wholesale markets since Friday that should translate to a 20c+ drop next week on all types of diesel fuel.

When you add the 10c duty reduction and this drop and vat, road diesel will be under 1.90 in most garages. Green diesel will be about €1.35 inc vat
