Parking outside my house

I live in a cul de sac close to a train stop. Our road is constantly clogged up with cars parked there by people using public transport. We also have a neighbour a street over who parks his large work van outside my house as he has two other cars in his own driveway. He leaves it parked there then drives around another van to get his tools each morning. We have an another man who also parks his van on our road to leave his own driveway for his car. It feels so unfair. It’s a public road so I guess there is not much I can do ? Or any options ?

Take video evidence of him using it to store gear .

That's against some council's bye- laws, not to mention foolish on his part . All his gear could be robbed !

People saying he can park anywhere , public space etc are ignoring the fact that he is doing this around the corner from where he lives himself . This is just ignorant behaviour .

Why doesn't he do this to his own immediate neighbours ? Because it would annoy people he knows and doesn't want to fall out with , they would be on him and probably park outside his house or worse.

There are regulations about vehicles used for long term storage and parking them in a public space would be something you could talk to the guards about . But check with your local council first and what rules they have .

I think if it is left there for over 9 months that is classed as long term storage . Most councils have rules about HGVs over 3.5 tonnes for instance being parked in residential estates and vans left for long periods of time .

Be careful though . He has a thick neck . Maybe talk to him politely first . He might genuinely not think you have an issue ;)

If he still doesn't move it back outside or near his own house then you should talk to the local council .

These things can escalate though and you don't want to be fighting with your neighbours . Most people have neighbours with multiple cars , vans etc and parking is at a premium , but live and let live . As long as they are amenable to moving them if difficulty with deliveries or if you have a lot of elderly visitors like at a christening or birthday party I would try to ignore it for the sake of peace .

You never know when you will need the goodwill , OP .

We had a bus driver collecting people near us and another with a massive camper van and loads of cars outside their house . The latter used to park blocking the road so the bus could not get up to collect it's passengers

In the end after a few episodes of mayhem guards were called by the bus driver , and the person with the multiple cars was told that they had to park their campervan off the estate if they had any further problems .

There wasn't a peep after that and the campervan is kept well tucked away !

There's no talking to that sort of bollox. Don't even bother.

The local authority may have restrictions on parking commercial vehicles in housing estates. Getting them to enforce anything is another story though

I often observe though that vans left 'parked' in that sort of scenario tend to develop recurring slow punctures

Go and have a chat with him and let him know that you had to chase away lads from his van who were looking far too interested in it.

Another guy with a van had all his gear robbed and the people in the house he was parked outside had no footage 😳

Just to say some of the more recent suggestions here sound like a way of potentially dealing with this particular situation all right.

Think it's highly unusual for a tradesman to use a van like that, basically as a shed. In my experience, tradesmen generally go to great lengths to keep their tools & equipment as safe as possible, maybe even keeping a closer eye on them than they would on their own children!

OP could tell van owner that he's seen somebody else shuffling around the van a few times, looking like he was trying to open it. That he didn't say anything the first time, but it's happened three or four times now, and he just thought the van owner should know…..

Fair point, but how much would renting/buying cost? Presumably there is no garden space with the house to build a shed. Or is there?

Can the OP advise if the van is ever moved or is it parked 24/7?

The OP should mention to the owner that the van is starting to attract attention recently, people peering into it, etc. Just don't mention boards.ie.

If they are parked on footpaths they can get a ticket if the community warden or a garda comes out.

But its dangerous…the cul de sac where I live can get blocked with cars parked either side so a fire engine or an ambulance could not get in…happens on a regular basis…People parking and heading to work for the day in the city centre or catching a bus or a train…its a proper nuisance…End up standing on the horn hoping someone comes out to shift their car so can park in my drive…City Council are useless…
