Thinking of switching energy suppliers - what’s your experience been like?

Hey folks,

I’m thinking about changing energy suppliers soon and I realised I actually have no idea what other people’s experiences are like in Ireland. So I’m curious about how your providers been treating you?

I’m especially wondering things like:
- Have you had any “fair play to them” moments or the opposite?
- What made you stick with your current supplier or what pushed you to switch?
- Does anyone actually understand their bills or is it just me staring at the numbers hoping enlightenment arrives?

Also, if there’s anything you wish energy companies here would finally sort out or start doing, I’m all ears.
Cheers to anyone who replies. I’m just trying to figure out what’s worth looking out for before I switch or whether I should just stay put for the sake of my sanity.

Log on to bonkers.ie, spend 15 mins plugging all the info in, and you'll soon see that it's usually well worth your while changing.

I do this every year, and can't remember the last time I stayed with the same company two years in a row.

It's a bit of a pain getting used to different websites and bill layouts each time, but hey, if it's saving me a couple of hundred €€, I'll get over it!

Once you're over 12 months with a company, and discounts that you had will cease, so if you haven't changed for years, you've been overpaying for years.

Changing only requires an account number and a meter reading - simple,2 minute job.

You work out who gives you the best rates. You go on their website. You click "I'm switching" or similar.

Enter your mprn number, address and bank details and submit.

Takes 3-4 minutes.

Do the same next December.

The new supplier does the switch. No need to contact old supplier.

Work out how many kWh you use over a 12 month period by looking at the meter reading on your last bill and comparing with the one 12 months before. Knowing that information should help accurately identify the best providers for you, at least at this point in time.

I do it almost every year if current supplier doesn't match best prices currently on the market which usually means doing it every year.

Energia, Yuno, Electric Ireland and currently Flogas since February are my last four years of suppliers. All primary based on their base deal at the time my contract was up, and before that a very similar pattern.

Very easy to switch, never had an issue, despite some of the horror stories you hear now and again about some of this suppliers...you'll only usually hear/see all the negative stuff anyway, despite in general most of them having similar levels of issues I'd wager.

If you aren't reviewing your contract rates every year, you are almost certainly paying well above the odds.

Would have used bonkers or similar up to the last couple of years but used: https://kilowatt.ie/ this year and found it brilliant.
