Anyone else here using tags from Mullinahone co op? I'm having issues with a heap of empty tissue samples for both the BVD and Genotype and I've never had issues before.
I had one empty BVD sample. Straight after tagging you have to hold the sample in the tagger facing up. If you forget that I find you'll have an empty sample as the sample seemingly falls out of the sample thingy.
Do you do that before you put sample into the bottle for it ?
No empties this year so far
There's two of us tagging. So I hold calf. My father tags. He gives the first tagger then to someone else when done with the sample in tagger facing up and they are roared at to keep the tagger facing up. The second ear is done with the second tagger and the tagger is handed the same way and by now they know to keep the tagger facing up. I then cross the gate and take both taggers facing up or leave them one taggers while I put the sample into the bottle and their respective jugs then for inside into the sample envelopes.
Jeez, I just tag and seem to get away ok. Wouldn't be uncommon to tag feck taggers out the gate and come back an hour or 2 later and take sample out of taggers
Cows Out today, yay
If one is facing down with us even for a few seconds, we know that sample is coming back empty. This was hard learned lessons.
You should try that on your own, out in a field with a suckler cow trying to kill you, never mind giving a bull calf an anaesthetic, waiting for it to work and putting a lamb ring on him. Whatever civil servant dreamt that up should try it first before writing it down.
I remember having alot of empties a few years ago, Mullinahone sent me a new tagger and it solved the problem, obviously was closing properly
Just change to cormac. No empties and a free dagger when you buy 50 or more tags
Never a problem here. As @blue5000 said dealing with a mad suckler cow mama teaches you a few things when tagging calves.
I was at an ifa dinner for a relative of mine on receiving a lifetime award from them.
Derek Deane was just after being put in hospital for the third time after being attacked by a suckler cow. My relative brought this up on the table as to how he was. One seated wondered out loud if it was the same cow on all occasions.
Why would you want a free dagger?
I have 2 heifers both calved 6 weeks that are by teak. Lovely looking heifers but will not stand for the full milking without a kick bar, they’ll kick it off just as they’re getting fully milked out. V annoying
Autocorrect, should be tagger
JJust Tagged a suckler calf born yesterday morning. Ran the mother out of the shed. Son caught calf, tagged it with first tag and it did this massive bawl, sent the mother mad. Same with secoone and blacklegged it too. Taggers thrown out onto silage, got ourselves safe amd let them back in together . Wouldn't want to be leaving it any longer before tagging it
Never got the free tagger, got the bar of chocolate this year and a hat the year before. Can't fault them in any way, product and service is first class.
There's a special hook for cows like that
Happy with my teaks so far anyway. They are not all calved yet and not milk recorded yet either. Very happy with stark Fr5803. If I was to pick cranky ones it would be Lawson Larry, not cross in general but a right hard kick occasionally.
This is the first year in a long time I haven't picked all my straws yet.
Was there a full moon last night or what... I got 5 calves this morning. Bit of a shock to the system on a Sunday morning.
We’ve about 8 heifers still kicking the units off non stop. It’s something else altogether. We’ve 6 three year old heifers then that refuse to lie in the cubicles and 1 two year old at it as well. The ones that won’t lie in the cubicles are on a straw bed now but come next winter if they’re still not lying in the cubicles they’ll be getting a 1 way ticket out of the place
I've a fool that doesn't lie in the cubicles. Went back one day and she was lying in the cubicle calving. Feck sake like. Back in the sh1t now again.
exact same thing happened here this morning, 5 aswell. All happy and healthy though so we won’t complain!
I bet there ebi bulls no regard for temprament or udders in bull selection just figures for milk and fertility
I had 3 heifers off kilfeacle danzig fr6649 last year and kicked for months and both still at it abit this year. All had small teats aswell What figure should you look at for good temperament and udder.
Just use proven bulls then people know what the stock are actually like
Problem with ebi is no one inspects the bull daughters they take scores from parents tested in other countries like nz where daughter proven bulls have about 100 dauhhters inspected and scored for all important traits so sons of sons had scored transfered without heifers being inspected thats my take on it i could be wrong but doubt it.
they do inspect dams
You wouldnt want to be using the top irish proven bull, over 20% reactors in his daughters where tb outbreaks occured
