Can you think of any?
Currently taking part in a March madness poll on Facebook for singles from 1996 and this popped up.
Spacehog - In the Meantime
Thought about that Band “Ash” and their Album “1977” . I think the album came out around 1996. “Goldfinger” and “Oh yeah” were their big hits from that album. People would remember them. But other singles such as “Kung Fu”
and “Girl from Mars”
didn’t do well in the singles charts despite the album exploding in the UK later.
This song “Petrol” from the Album “Trailer” in 1994 was their first minor hit of any description apparently.
I never heard of it myself.
No idea what happened Ash in the years after that they seemed to never do anything of note again after “1977”.
I think this would probably count as a genuinely forgotten 90s song in that you never hear it anymore. But it was an Atlantic 252 staple in the mid 1990s. Not sure it ever actually charted in Ireland though - I don't know why, it was a decent song.
Martin Page - In the house of stone and light
Didn't even chart in his home in the UK but hit No.14 in the US hot 100 and No.1 in the Adult Contemporary chart.
Girl from Mars was No.11 in the UK chart. The first most would of heard from Ash was the 1995 Heineken ad.
Went on to have a few big UK hits after the 1977 Album.
My mother used to host Karaoke nights back in the 90's and this was huge with the Mammys back then reaching No.8 in 1990.
Rita McNeil - Working Man
Crush jennifer paige
Summer 1998
'Girl from Mars' was actually the song of theirs that I was most familiar with. I was under the impression they were fairly 'big' at the time, even in the UK.
"Tall man in Tallaght..."
their second album didnt do too well but their third album 'free all angels' was number 1 in the uk, they had a good few top 10 singles too over there and in ireland when singles were a big thing
Probably hear this a lot over the next few days. Reached No.6 in 1991
Mary Black, Dolores Keane and Mary Lou Harris - Sonny
RIP Dolores.
candy was a massive radio song for a couple of years.
Only reaching No.57 in the UK charts in 1998 it later became better known as the theme tune to Peep Show.
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Charting 36 years ago this week reaching No.12 here and No.6 in the UK and still touring.
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse in Your Soul
Following the breakup of the Stone Roses John Squire released one album with his new band. Reaching No.3 in the Uk
The Seahorses - Love Is the Law
Reaching No.31 in the UK charts on it's first release it was used in Coca-Cola adverts for Euro 96. Re-released in 98 reaching No.18 it became well known for the segment of the same name on SMTV.
Collapsed Lung - Eat My Goal
Reaching No.8 here and No.9 in the UK in 1991. This songs was co-written by Prince as you you can probably tell.
Martika - Love… Thy Will Be Done.
Reaching No.3 in 1993.
K-7 - Come Baby Come
Emmylou Harris
Stupid auto correct!
The Ballad of Tom Jones - Space
For some reason this song is having a bit of a resurgence in Germany. It never came out here but was huge in Germany and Austria.
It's coming up to Schlagermove season so you often get hit's like these coming back into fashion.
Remember hearing this in Spain a few months before it was released here in the Summer of 93. Strangely it was sampled by Simply Red and not the other way round.
The Goodmen - Give It Up
Released in the Summer of 92 reaching No.4 here and No.2 in the UK.
Smart E's - Sesame's Treet
Same artists, different aliases, also charted as Riva (with Danii Minogue on vocals) and Chocolate Puma.
It was sampled by The Twang as well.
The actual beat sample is from a Sergio Mendes song.
iRadio do, sometimes, still play this
