Will you?
Can see anywhere if its okay to give cows 8+ months in calf as i have few who will be still be to calf when starting breeding?
i wouldn’t give a completely unproven vaccine to a cow which is that close to calving.
so what is the science on in calf cows. From what stage to what stage should be considered?
all cows ,maidens and stock bulls done here last Saturday …..no need to apply for licence ..did remainder of cows to calve as well over next 3/4 weeks
I’ve Herdwatch here and everything recorded in that
I need 80 doses but I will be selling around 25 stock in the next few weeks so no need to do them. If I just got a bottle of 50 and did all females and left out 3-5 bull calves that will be gone in the august would I be ok or is there much risk to males not going for breeding.
TThe exporters are testing for blue tongue, will they be able to distinguish between vaccinated and infected
Just got vaccine from vet, recommended breeding animals and bull get priority
220 a bottle in vets.
Vet said do them all if you have it. But cows, bulls, and weanling destined for breeding (bulls or heifers) as priority. I will have doses left over.
Fine to give to cows early or late in pregnancy.
For a start, that bottle should be €195 and there’s plenty of profit for the greedy vet at that, €220 is gouging.
Time will tell how effective it is
my vet wouldn’t be known for competitiveness
so calves destined for export in the back end should be done also? If I leave some dairy cross steers an they get the virus what risk is there to them as they are not breeding stock?
I was told not to do bull because he would get a temperature spike and will ruin his semen
WWatched thw munsterai webinar last night, they stressing to get all done now in order to have cover for the peak midge activity in may. They said bulls suffer wicked from it, knocks the fertility off them and has knock on impact.
Was there much or any temperature spike after it?
they said in rear occasions it can raise temp but they didn't specifically mention it in terms off bull, I would imagine a mild rise shouldn't effect a bull to much. the webinar was very good put a lot of panic out of the way for me. They have all the ai bulls done with no issues
This webinar from AHDB with vets from around the EU, advise not to vaccinate within the first 3 weeks of pregnancy ( from 17 minutes on ).

none tbh …..but I’d a good few cows very tender on there feet and walking gingerly following day
now I’m no vet, but it must be a fair bit of a vaccine to affect the feet like that…???
they were fine after 36/48 hours tbh …nothing got treated ….as vet said for a vaccine to be effective you will have some sort of reaction ….when I did lepto booster in Jan Smaxtec lit up that night with high temp alerts ….I’ve live booster going in next Saturday and expect similar
Interesting data to see, lots are guilty of treating cows like machines at times
Any beef lads on here going to vaccinate for store cattle?
IIf you vaccinate an incalf cow will she pass any immunity to the calf via beastings
I am doing the lot as the bottle is big enough.
Wouldn’t that be a short term problem
I have found someone to donate the spare 10-14 doses.
Three I offered to said no as they were already doing so would have left over themselves. Noted that not one of them had offered to me……..
The fella I offered to is appreciative anyway. Only keeps 7-8 cows and buys some calves aswell so he can do his cows at least.
I did all mine including 12 late calving cows. 5 of them have calved now as normal.
I was expecting a raft of temp spikes from my Smaxtec …..had none ,did bulls too but no bolus in them .they will be getting second shot next sat week …heifers will be served by Ftai on apri 10 with bull going with them 3/4 days later ..should be fine
A man told me one day that the advice being rolled out is all wrong. Calves are given a jacket, microbes, 15 deg, no drafts, treated like royalty. The freshly calved cow is kept hungry and thrown out in all weather and left standing on a hard roadway in bad weather. Made sense to me.
Are you vaccinating?
I wouldn't class calves being swiped off the cow while still wet as treating a calf well
