Compared to the Iranian FM Araghchi, Hegseth and Trump sound like ridiculous cowboys who are doing America’s image no favours at all in the world. They’d be better off leaving the press briefings to soldiers like Caine who at least have some gravitas.

So I decided to look it up, if one counts only weapons killings (eg bombs, bullets, artillery, not counting vehicle accidents or natural causes) it seems to be Congo. Of the 27 Irish killed of all causes, at least nine were in a single clash at Niemba by Balubas (The Irish killed about 25 before going down).

I would say 'different standard.' They're a bit like the Ranger Regiment, they are very well trained light infantry, excellent in a particular role. But historically the US Army's been a larger-scale focus, going back to comparisons with the British Army's regimental system: Great esprit and effectiveness at battalion level or lower for the Brits, but at higher levels, the US wins on staff work, logistics and equipment. I may not put money on an Army company or battalion beating a Marine counterpart, but I'll put an Army Division up against a Marine Division to win any day of the week.
I'm not sure I'd share your assessment, though. The Navy has plenty enough small craft and helicopters (even better if they include USMC helicopters) to deal with the small boat threat, once they are no longer busy with higher priority problems. I can think of a few other jobs for a couple thousand Marines.
A side note, I might agree with an opinion that the US thought that other countries should take up the job of running escort through the strait is a bit optimistic, but I don't think it's for 'We don't want to' issues. The other countries will want their oil, even if they have to resort to tanker-war-era-type escorting to do it. The problem is that, like in other areas, the countries simply don't have the capacity to do it, which may have affected matters a bit. The Royal Navy is currently getting excoriated in the naval press for its total inability to do anything after thirty years of neglect, and by way of example, a ridiculous amount of attention is being given to HMS Dragon and her replenishing/rearming in the UK as the only available ship the UK to respond to what's going on in the Mid-East. I'm still not sure if she's departed port yet. I can see the RN choosing to escort Nassau-registered tankers, for example, whilst staying out of the fighting… if they had the escort capability to do it.
It's also part of the reason the Irish/British defense understanding of last week is also not being well received in the UK: They realise they don't have the assets to take care of their own business, let alone donate assets to Irish needs. This may be a fringe benefit to this Iran conflict, as further example that nations seriously need to reverse course on their military neglect, and perhaps start fixing it before an actual existential threat appears which would need it.

I can understand the logic behind expecting countries to protect their own ships, if the USN goes in there it will be a turkey shoot, the channels are too narrow for evasive measures and its close enough to shore to allow even guns to shoot at ships.

Apart from the fact that this is America's mess to clean up, I don't think anyone should want Chinese and American warships in this same tiny area when America is threatening to blow up one of China's main oil sources, Iran, and Iran is threatening to blow up American vessels. Which oil should China protect..? Only the Saudi oil? Or Kharg island as well?
Anyone can see the logic in basically anything if they want to. It's not hard, especially when you leave out the complexities of the real world. "If nations want their oil, they should come protect it." I mean yeah, that is logic. There is logic being utilised when coming up with that statement.
But the world is a lot more complex than that. What happens when an American vessel hits a mine and it is misunderstood for a Chinese torpedo? What happens when an American torpedo hits a Chinese vessel? What happens when Iran hits a Chinese vessel by mistake with a ballistic missile? What happens when Israel goes rogue and bombs Kharg Island, and surprises America again with attacks on Iranian oil infrastructure?
Yesterday, I said I would not be surprised if Chinese forces were on Kharg island next week and now Trump is inviting them to the region. I would argue that two of the world's superpowers should not be engaged in military exercises together in the world's most hostile waters when their interests are so completely at odds and there are countless factions all around that could engage in false flag attacks or massive escalations to meet their own goals.
Supplying weapons to a country that undertakes an illegal invasion? In that case how much is Iran owed by western countries for supplying Iraq with the weapons, including chemical, for their illegal invasion of Iran?

It seems that the US only has 8 anti mine searcraft, including minesweepers and minehunters. NATO overall has 150-180. The US has been decommissioning its anti mine vessels, believing drones could fill the void. The US in February actually moved its Avenger Class minesweeoers out of the Middle East.
Reports a Turkish vessel was allowed through the strait after negotiating with Iran.
On the other hand, China and Russia abstained yesterday on a UNSC resolution condemning Iran for attacking Arab neighbours. 135 UN member states supported the resolution.

This appears at odds with the initial findings of the ICJ that the SA case is plausible and for the Court to issue "provisional measures" for Israel to "prevent Genocide. In other words, the case had "merit". The Court further adopted emergency measures for Israel to ensure food was supplied to Gaza to prevent famine. The Court intervened a third time and ordered Israel to halt its Rafah Offensive.
As for the American public, this is what they think:

They abstained because the UNSC omitted wording that also condemned the US and Israel's illegal, unprovoked acts of aggression against Iran to the resolution. It still passed, not vetoed and both countries called out Iran's actions.
On the other hand the vote held before that, which called on all sides to cease military action, both Latvia and the US ( vetoed ) voted against. Four voted for Russia, China, Pakistan And Somalia the other 9 abstained on ceasing military action.
Lincoln project said the last effective minesweepers were mothballed a while ago to be scrapped, and all that's there is a new issue ship that's not particularly designed for minesweeping, and just one of them that can't defend itself from drones particularly well.

The Trump regime are now suggesting they will remove licenses from Us media channels if they do not fall in line with the administrations narratives on the conflict.
Despite the majority of the public appearing to oppose the conflict, those criticizing or showing the conflict in a negative way than the regimes view will face the consequences.
What a **** show the US has become under the Trump administration. Israel under Nethanyahu, are posessed with destruction. Christ help us if this is the bastion of anyone's righteousness. If you have lads cheering on Iran in hope of a mortal victory in the western world so as to overcome US and Israel you've sunk about as low as you can get in anyone's democratic mindset. And they have, between them, achieved this.
We keep hearing about mining the strait, but in reality they cant, due to water depths there isnt much space for larger ships to get in and out, so if they actually mined it with indiscriminate mines, they would just impact the next ship regardless of which flag it flew or which port/cargo it was carrying.
Now remote boats, intelligent mines, shore based guns/rockets are a completely different thing.
