Have 15-20 continental stores averaging 450-500kgs that i want to move in the next few weeks, should i push on and sell soon with beef quotes dropping or try hold off in the hope of a jump from lads buying for grass in a few weeks? crystal ball stuff i know but talk of 6.80 base next week already
I am in a similar position and rightly or wrongly I am going to hold tight until the northern buyers are back in action.
Ive just sold my bulls, and it sounds like the northern buyer will be back in couple weeks.
I am no expert, but with the northern buyers coming back, and from that podcast of the big finisher in England, saying he can't find enough 500kg plus cattle to finish. Plus any Australian or new Zealand beef/lamb stuck in the gulf of somewhere.
It all points to a tightening supply for Europe, if you ask me.
I'd say they're dropping it hard now so they can raise it back up slowly when it tightens.

Ya, I hadn't heard that they were working on it when sold my bullz, to be fair I am caught for space so had to make space with calving etc. But its wrong that its not published so all have a fair craic at it.

took 13 bull weanlings to ballinakill Saturday. Averaged 330kgs and €4.50/kg. Chx and aax 8 months old. Happy enough.
Cull cows went from €2.30 - €2.90 in Dungarvan this morning. Heavier cows were at the upper end and lighter ones at the lower end.
Yearlings and stores seem to be as strong as ever. Didn't see any AA or HE selling for less than €4.20.
@TinyMuffin Dairy x? Decent price for them cattle. Grass buyers should become more active now in the coming weeks which will hopefully firm up the price of stores and light stock.

Took 20 bulls to roscrea 2 weeks ago. 415kgs average made €4.20 average. They’d usually be on beet tops but was too wet. needed them out of the shed.
I didn’t notice much of a lift today with the northern buyers back in action. Anyone else keep a closer eye than me?
I can't see the northern buyers lighting much of a fire under the general trade tbh. Yes extra competition is always a help but the beef price in the north isn't anything exciting either. It's much the same story north of the border as in the south, the suck calves and weanlings are a flying trade and it's a very small jump in a lot of cases to the price of the equivalent store beast. Unless the cattle trade is stronger across the border coupled with a good exchange rate on the money there isn't much incentive to come south to buy cattle. Those lad's don't come for the good of there health or to give us a dig out its simply economics if there's money to be made on the deal between the price difference and changing the money from euro to sterling.
I'd expect them to make more of an impact on the price of breeding stock, eg bulling heifers, incalfs and stock bulls. A lot of the suckler men I know in Fermanagh swear theres a better breed of replacement south of the border and those type of cattle aren't as closely tied to the price of beef as a weanling or store.
I thought dry cattle to be back a bit in Ballina today from previous marts, good trade in younger stock
A lot of talk on the radio this morning that the Iran War (and consequently oil prices) will have a big knock-on effect on beef this year. You'd have to wonder if fellas paying €500-600 for bull calves will regret it..

I’ve two bull Weanlings here at the moment.
CHX & LMX both born last week of September last year.
The CHX is in picture 01, he would be a good scopey R grade out of Lapon & a HEX cow, about the 220-240kg mark.
Picture 02, Nice U Grade out of ZAG & a CHX cow, about the 200-220kg.
Question, should I sell for grass in the next month or two or hold until the Autumn?
Only thing if I was keeping until the Autumn they would have to be squeezed. (running with heifers).
