No issue with getting a bargain but this complaining lark gets annoying when it's all the time. Fairly obvious there was going to be trouble over there, was always going to effect prices. Plenty bought it before the price gauging and what's complaining going to do anyway? A woman on the radio yesterday giving out about the price of 300 litres of Kerosene and finds it difficult to pay for heating, yet she smokes at least 20 fags a day which costs aprox €140.00 a week. Seriously!
Nothing like peddling a bit of fear to get the punters to open their wallets….

Going very well serious heat from it especially mixed with hardwood blocks i will be buying again in another 18 months or so
coal wharehouse are keeping their prices the same and they haven’t heard about an increase from their suppliers
Might be worth stocking up for next season

Is the amberflame from Murphy's Direct (previous page) any good? Can't see anything cheaper than that delivered. Also, can coal keep. Was going to order a ton from Wrays (Columbian coal) also, but probably won't get to it till next winter…will it be grand if I leave it as it arrives (wrapped up) or should it be unwrapped and stored out of the sun, etc. Will it keep that long or start to "crumble".
@TaSeThat Coal has been around for 360 million years, another year won't harm it. Just keep it dry.
I have pallets of coal for a few years, once they are kept dry the bags will be fine and that’s your biggest worry, the fuel itself will be fine

Well thats a kick in the balls. I've read the manual and it seems they don't like the idea of their stove getting to hot.
I think the best you can do is burn brown coal nuggets aka Union Nuggets. They burn a little cooler than black coal and a lot cooler than pet coke. They are however a little more expensive but not a huge amount.
The other option is to burn just coal and be prepared to buy spare parts as necessary.
Obviously if you can get wood then thats going to be best for the stove.
Tonne lot, 50 x 20kg bags Grade A smokeless ovoids from Wray's, delivered to the West this week worked out at €454.71inc delivery. There a FX fee of €7.82c on top of that. Works out at € 9.25 a bag. Buying it for someone for next winter because they feel it could increase a lot before then. Inclined to believe that myself. BTW, anyone using coal nuggets, ovoids ,maxi flame, etc, with the ingredient pet coke in it should never be used in a stove. Lots don't contain it but quite a few do. It'll ruin a stove.
Firewood direct have a good price on kiln dried beech right now if anyone's interested, just got some for 2026/2027 winter
@pat734 - how do I know what ones dont contain pet coke?
I have 20kW boiler stove since 2012 and have only burned coal in it since then with no issues. The grate is on its last legs now though so will probably get that swapped out during the summer.
Ask your supplier, if he's a proper supplier he'll know. Some bags have it written on the back. Coal will be shinier, light very quickly and has very intense heat. Remember that pet coke is a petroleum by product high sulphur levels and when combined with any moisture forms sulphuric acid. I'll leave it to your imagination what that does to your stove, your chimney, etc, never mind anything else.
Most if not all ovoid's contain pet coke. Its the amount thats important.
Coal as in Polish Coal or Columbian Coal etc are just coal no extras like pet coke. Antracite coal that is just that coal. Lignite nuggets contain no pet coke.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Parts of the stove will burn out in time and need replacing anyway no matter what you burn.
Just don't do the Irish classic of filling the stove to the very top and leaving it opened up so the stove actually glows red. You may not believe me but I know people that think its OK to do that.
Arigna Fuels produces a smokeless fuel called Ecobrite, which does not contain petroleum coke (pet coke). This makes it only smokeless coals available without pet coke.
Ecobrite has a “Ready to Burn” certification number MSF0028. According to the government registry, this fuel is made up of approximately 96% anthracite fines and a small amount of starch used as a binder.
The same product is also sold by LCC Coal under the name Hi Lite, which has its own “Ready to Burn” number MSF0207.
But the problem there is anthracite is the hottest burning coal. The instructions on the boru stoves are either rubbish or their stoves are rubbish. But as @Titiangerm states you can burn coal with no issues.
I not 100% sure but I think that the boru stoves use steel plate in part of their construction and that will not normally be as good as cast iron for resisting the effects of heat. So to be on the safe side their instructions try to steer users away from using coal.
