Reports stating that Israel have launched an attack against Iran
Well Sanchez is emerging as the leader of a European country showing some moral compass. And the reaction of ordinary people to Sanchez's statements is putting pressure on others to show some backbone also. Already Carney has got 'a fit of reversing'. Merz humiliated himself!!
I agree but that begs the question 'why accept the invite'?
This applies to Martin also.
it is about money. It is always about money. Our economies depend heavily on the US. It is the dilemma of having to decide if we pay dearly for our principles with our money.
The Israelis have more than one defense system though. The US has also given them their THAAD system. I just don't see Iran prevailing militarily in this conflict. I think if there was any chance of that these attacks would not have taken place to begin with. The best the Iranian regime can hope for is to survive, then they can spin that as a victory to their domestic audience.
Economically the Israelis will take a hammering. Their economy has already been precarious with Gaza. At some point, Israel’s own people will revolt
So Germany and Ireland's economy depends on accepting invites to the WH?
I disagree.
Tactically and strategically I wonder what the Hamas and Hezbollah leadership (that is left) think of all this.
Were the October 2023 attacks on Israel worth it? If the goal was martyrdom well played. An 100% victory. From a military and strategic standpoint it was an utter abysmal failure.
What were they thinking or hope would happen? It is a right wing Israeli government.
I think Hamas just made Netanyahu a hero in the eyes of his people. Ultimately giving Israel the green light to complete their geopolitical goals with American backing. Previously Netanyahu was under pressure as leader of Israel, not anymore.
And now it got worse for Hamas - their main ally Iran- sole tactic is now is be awkward dig in and attack on the gulf states. Hardly a “winning” strategy is it? Would Hamas have went ahead with the October attacks if they could foresee this chain of events?
I think that the current leader is capricious and will take everything as a slight. If we did not show up on Paddy’s Day, it would be seen as a grave insult to the MAGA people
So far most Israelis support the war. That could change if Iran were able to inflict significant damage and casualties on Israel, but the reality thus far is Tehran taking a hamnering, while Tel Aviv remains largely unscathed due to the vast majority of Iran's drones and missiles being intercepted.
The Israeli economy can only hold out for so long. When people cannot afford their basic living costs, they will revolt. Revolutions are not driven by ideology, they are driven by hunger. And their are signs of a flagging economy in Israel
There's elections scheduled in Israel this coming October. It will be interesting to see how that pans out if it takes place. At least they have a democratic decision to make, unlike Iran as it stands.
Hopefully the Israelis vote for change, but they're mostly all of the same mindset over Gaza and all of Palestine. Unfortunately it seems the political mindset is virtually all the same that way, but maybe a more moderate govt would be more peaceful.
I would be very afraid if Sanchez will become leader of Europe. He is a Mao in disguise. As far left as he can be at the moment. Socialism and communism are failed enterprises but some people never learn. One will have to live few years in socialist paradise to fully understand what it means.
Nobody has stood up to the oval office yet. Americans can't deal with pushback they'd look like fools if stood up to
So what, let him feel insulted. What's he going to do?
I have thought about that in recent times. Surely the answer would be no.
Conversely I wonder what do the likes of Ben Gvir and Smotrich think about the attacks now? Are they secretly delighted they happened?
Fine if you’re standing up for yourself- but when you’re standing up for your country you’re representing or for Europe, they already have the ammunition to throw at you; it’s designed to humiliate -even sitting there listening to Trump spew verbal diorrea is humiliating enough- they’re passive aggressive and unhinged - the lot of them. It would be like arguing with the Burkes of Mayo - it won’t end well
Now they have failed by replacing Ayatollah Khameini with Ayatollah Khameini the two zionist pariah regimes turn to the old tried and trusted Gaza formula by bombing hospitals.
That is the spin those who wear the Keffiyeh in Ireland as a “fashion accessory” would put on it. But your comment is partly true it puts Martin in an invidious position. A big decision to be made as to how he plays it.
It is not one PBP or SF have to face because one is a party of protest (no real interest in governance) while the other is viewed as not ready for power by the ROI, by the electorate. They don’t have the mandate to form a government here.
Easy to throw comments from the “cheap seats” while the actual leader of this country has to think of the country’s interests long term. While balancing the need of stability as part of a nation with soft power in the EU.
It must be a fact then just like Israel's next Iran is Turkey.
I would love to give up my stressful job and pursue my love of writing. I would love to go travel. But at a certain point, I have a mortgage to pay, dependents to care for, a life to sustain. I cannot pursue my passions blindly. There are always consequences to every action. Ireland is in a similar bind
There are no neutral countries being attacked. Every country that was attacked has been assisting America with their military build up, allow military access to their ports, host us military assets on their territory If you are standing on the road throwing rocks at the police and I am standing next to the road, adding rocks to the pile of rocks you are throwing at the police, you can't object to the police arresting you because 'I didn't throw any rocks'
Turkey has not armed Hamas, Hezbollah, sent missiles to Russia for Russia to use against Ukraine, shot tens of thousands of its own protestors in the past few months alone, or come close to having enough uranium for nuclear weapons.
Oh I know full well how pie in the sky it is 😂 that's why I said "thinking cap" which, we know they won't.
Ukraine were attacked for no reason, out of the blue, by a warmonger who wants their resources for himself, so people are sympathising with them.
Iran were attacked for no reason, out of the blue, by a warmonger who wants their resources for himself, so people are sympathising with them.
It's not the drones that are the issue, it's the acts being committed by the people with drones.
That's not ironic, that's consistent. The fact that you're hyper-focussing on this and other nonsense while pretending you're not a zionist is as laughable as it is transparent. Who gives a flying fcuk what weapons are being used. Your entire argument is baseless, you sound like Beavis and Butthead……….."huh huh, this woman was sexually assaulted by a guy carrying a baseball bat, and the left are horrified………….but that other guy defended his house from invaders with a baseball bat, and they're cheering him on…….hur hur hurrr, when will the leftist liberalz stop contradicting themselves".
This is pretty simple stuff, you can't make heads nor tails of it because you are pretending to be a simpleton. You CAN understand what it's about, you're just pretending not to because you're sucking Israel's flute.
Edit: I posted this before seeing the Mod instruction not to quote this poster, apologies
That’s a very sweeping statement without any evidence provided, especially when most gulf countries and UK and France went out of their way to make it clear they don’t want to be involved nor help the US in their attacks last weekend.
Whats next neutral countries like Ireland being attacked because we have deep connections to US?
You are going to very far to undermine the very neutrality our Far Left loves to bring up when they chose to support their favourite CRINKs regime https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CRINK
There is no 'winning' this war. If Iran are defeated, they will collapse into a failed state and the entire region will be destablilised for a generation. 90 million Iranians will be reminded of why their parents hate America and Israel, tens of thousands of innocent civillians will have been killed, many soldiers will have died, billions of euros of infrastructure, hospitals, airports, schools, roads, water systems, railways, power stations will have been destroyed, Billions of people will be forced to pay higher energy costs, most of those people are desperately poor and this will impose real hardship There is no winning, the entire war is aimed only to allow Israel to expand, and for Trump to ???? Everyone Else Loses never mind the costs in environmental destruction, climate change, oil spills in the Mediterranean, unexploded bombs washing up to mutilate generations of people for decades to come, cancer from depleted uranium munitions…..
Well if you were Martin what would you do? SF/PBP get to call him a sycophant if he goes with the bowl of shamrock to Trump now. However if he doesn’t go it means no annual meeting and trade deals with the USA - that the IDA and EI do behind the scenes for Irish interests.
I think the half way house option is for Martin to play up Ireland’s peacekeeping efforts. A country who faced its own struggles in the past. And forced those who wanted the gun not the ballot to normalise and chose democracy. Then hand Trump the bowl of shamrock as a representation of that.
Also the Irish American vote is now slowly veering towards Republican. A lot different to the SF/noraid days. It will play well on that score.
Spot on.
And the Netanyahu/Trump supporters will be giving out when displaced Iranians start arriving in Ireland claiming asylum. Because Israel certainly won't help them.
I would go along if I was him and try to minimise my interactions, without insulting the current administration. We have bills to pay and he realises that he must go along with the narrative. I know that when history looks back, it will denounce his complicity in the Maga regimen. But we don’t have an alternative; Ireland depends largely on US money
No one here is excusing attacks on neutral countries or civilians. Pointing out context or speculating about Irans motives for doing so isn’t the same as defending the action.
It feels more like you’re frustrated that others aren’t reacting with the same intensity as you, rather than responding to something anyone has actually said.
You seem particularly focused on demanding louder condemnation from people criticising Israel, you didnt seem to put the same effort into calling out the pro-Israel posters here over the last few days.
It reads as though you’re casting yourself as the adult in the room, the voice of some kind of moral clarity, while mischaracterising everyone else.
